Mr. Deeds Promo Discussion

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: brianld

Looks like the next Tivo promo will be coming soon ... early this morning my sneaky little Tivo recorded the trailer for Mr. Deeds. No yellow star or anything under showcases yet, but it's in the list of "Clips On Disk", so I'm sure they'll put a link / menu to it somewhere.

Posted by: Turtleboy

Let the outrage begin!

Anyone want to take any bets? What's the over/under on the number of new posters who will come here, and in there first post start a new thread (even though there are plenty of other threads about it) complaining about the "spam" "taking up space" on "the TiVo that they OWN" and the little yellow star runing the ascetics of the TiVo central page?

Posted by: markp99

Vegas has got 1:2 odds that it will be >100 messages (current count of AbsOutraged = 181), and 1:3 odds that 9 separate threads on the same topic will be started.

Posted by: brianld

But what if the star is now a different color? Say PURPLE ? Then we'll have a whole other group complaining that they changed the color of the star . . .

:D :D :D

Hmmm. I don't know quite how to say this.

I appreciate that you, and many others, don't have an issue with this type of promotion on TiVo.

But there are obviously some who do. There are many opinions on this.

I guess, I'm wondering if this is the type of post that gets those who have an objection riled up all the more. It could be.

I'd hope that we aren't going to have another flurry of long negative posts. From either side of the debate. I know both sides have been frustrated with those seeming endless threads.

I'm not speaking to you specifically turtleboy, but to the situation in general. Please don't take this personally, as I said up front, it's a tricky thing to communicate. I really value your contributions to the forum.

I just don't think we need to egg the situation on.

Anyways, that's just my opinion. Thanks -

Bob

[edited for a bit of clarification]

Pony,

I am curious... Outside of this site... how has the reaction been received to the new promotions, if you can tell us? Do you think people like them? Obviously this is a heated group of die-hard tivo users... I just wonder what the average response is...

Posted by: markp99

I think the point of these kinds of posts is to show just how silly this whole subject is to some of us...

Posted by: zaknafein

I think we're all just frustrated that for weeks on end this has been going on, with the same people whining about the same thing endlessly. I appreciate that people are intitled to their opinion, but good grief, there are far more important things in the world to get mad about.

Posted by: Turtleboy

Bob,

You are right, and I do apologize. I certainly don't want to make trouble for either TiVo or on the forum.

Look, I've gotten into heated arguments on the off-topic forum on various subjects, especially the Middle East. Now that's something that's important, and although I don't agree with the other side at all, I certainly undestand how someone would put great import into what they believe and why they would get very upset.

But for this, I certainly fall into the camp that can't understand, no matter how hard I try, why anyone would get so riled up and upset about this issue. If they want to come on and complain about it, let them. I will leave the (in what is still my opinon well deserved) mocking to others.

Posted by: Xaa

I think we realize how silly it gets, but those that are serious about it do not react well to being called silly.

Let them show up and rant about the star. Let the mods close the thread and direct them to one thread to complain about the TCP.

Insult them under your breath and they'll go away a lot quicker than if you get into a "Your Silly">>>"No, your Silly" type of argument.

Sure, I mentioned it already in another thread. Our phones have not been ringing. Yes, we received a few complaints, but they were very, very few. And even fewer emails.

So no, there hasn't been a big reaction. I think most people either like them, or don't, but they're easy enough to ignore if you don't.

But at least Adam Sandler is SOO much more entertaining than Sheryl Crow.

Kind of like threads that are titled "I CAN'T TAKE THIS STAR $@#* ANYMORE!" OR "I'M SO MAD I CAN'T EVEN SPEL STRATE!" Just ignore and move on.

'Course, sometimes it's fun to bang on the fishtank. :D

At least it's a argument about TiVo...

Is the Mr. Deeds promo more than the usual 30-second one on TV? If so, this may be a promo I want to see. I would like to see movie trailers if they are cooler than what you see elsewhere.

I remember when they release the Star Wars AOTC trailer online, but you had to have the DVD to watch it. TiVo needs cool trailers like that.

Posted by: Frylock

I think arkham999 has the right idea with offering things no one else can. After all, ppl who use Tivo are just that much more informed. :)

There are 3 clips that I can see. I haven't looked at all of them yet, but the first one is 1 minute long, so I think the answer to your question is yes.

As a side note, I also noticed a different clip named real_on_tivo or tivo_on_real ... something like that. Anyhow, looks like it's a promo for Real Networks RealOne player ... URL to a "free trial for Tivo users" shows up at the bottom of the screen. Just tried it and the link was broken.

Looks like there's 3 clips 1 1-minute clip, and 2 2-minute clips.

When you preheat the pot with posts like yours, it's no wonder people get pissed off - (no smiley here).

I was going to start a thread asking when the first person seeking to generate some controversy would start making predictions, but that's irrelevant now....

Checkout Showcases. Nothing wrong with that?

1. No yellow star.
2. Movie previews.
3. Content warning precedes viewing.

Cooooolllllll! Bring us more!

I've got a yellow star on both tivos for two of the Deeds previews.

Posted by: brianld

Yellow star showed up late this afternoon on my Tivo. It was in Showcases quite a few hours before, without the yellow star.

Posted by: andyf

Oops! No yellow star for me yet!

Yellow star for me.

Posted by: Opus

Dammit!!! I hated Adam Sandler on Remote Control.... I hated him on SNL, and I certainly don't like him in the movies.

I can't believe my beloved TiVo is recording him without my consent!!! This is an outrage!!!!

(Just kiddin') ;)

(well maybe just sorta kiddin', I don't care about Sheryl Crow, but I really can't stand Sandler)

If they could turn the reserved partition into a continously-updated "AdCritic Top 10" area, I'd watch them all!

Even with 500 channels, two tuners and 106 hours on the DirecTiVo, often the ads are the best thing on TV!!! :D

Posted by: arkham999

I got the yellow star today. You know what? I really liked the promos for this movie. Then again, I like Adam Sandler movies (I have a wishlist for them at the bottom of my SPM). Still, if TiVo wants to promote stuff to me that I like and am interested in, that's fine with me! :)

Posted by: Chuck_IV

This movie is a remake of a 1936 Gary Cooper movie call Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, so it will be interesting to see how Sandler manipulated the script to add alot of his humor.

I am also anxious to see it, cause the town scenes were filmed about a mile from my house. It was kinda cool to see the road, they filmed on, "snowed over" in JUNE. :D

Posted by: sean67854

I sortof like Adam Sandler movies if you can get past the fact that they're all pretty much the same.

Posted by: xuxa

Movie trailers finally, hope they keep this up, next a pony

Now that is a great idea, anyone see those new Disney commercials - "the Engagement" and "traveling dad" those are done really well

Posted by: Otto

Actually, I count 3 promo clips and 4 trailers. Haven't watched them all, so some may be identical.

Posted by: biker

I receive 3 clips. I like Adam Sandler movies.

Posted by: Otto

I dislike Adam Sandler, but I like movie promos on my Tivo. Man, I'm torn on this one.

Tivo! More movie trailers! Variety!

Posted by: grecorj

Previews of new Fall shows would be cool, too. Not 30-second snippets, but maybe 5 minute previews of the actual pilots... TiVo has the NBC partnership thing going, this could be great!

Posted by: marksman

I am not sure we are gong to see 5 minute preview snippets of new fall network shows on Discovery Channel in the middle of the night.

That being said, it would be a good idea, I just don't think anyone is going to do it.

Turtleboy-
Saying things like this is only going to further anger people. You are not just talking about the star, you are implying that our opinions our annoying and useless. Something like that is not going to keep people from seeing another perspective. When people see others who insult their opinions there is no debate, just flames. So lets stop it now, before it gets out of hand.

-The Simpsons :) :D   :p

Posted by: TivoKid

My friend got his TiVo several years ago, he showed it off to me and I loved it, so I got one. I don't like the whole star thing, he loves it. He didn't even know who Sheryl Crow was.... he loved the videos on the TiVo, and he went out and bought the cd. (But not at Best Buys!)

So for every person like me, who at first really disliked the whole star thing, there is another person like my friend who doesn't listen to the radio much and loved that TiVo introduced him to Sheryl Crow's music. But either way we weren't "moved" enough one way or another to email the official TiVo people about it.... but reading about the "controversy" here made me think about the issue a bit more than my first automatic reaction, so I like the fact that people with differing views can come here and discuss the changes that are going on.

Well, it's actually a bit more than ruining the esthetics of the page, so I'll put in my one negative point here.

I never turn off my TV, I just put my TiVo in "standby." The reason is unimportant but, if you must know, my rotten TV set can't remember that it was in "video input" mode before powering down and I don't want to hunt up the TV remote to fix it every time I turn on my Tivo.

Anyway, the "page down" button has become my favorite way to go to standby with four clicks. Except when the yellow star is the last entry. I don't mind the yellow star so much as I object to it screwing up my habits!

Posted by: trainman

Hmm, I notice that "Mr. Deeds" is a Columbia Pictures release. Columbia Pictures is owned by Sony. Sony is one of TiVo's "partners."

Make what you will of this information.

Posted by: lwdupont

I don't mind things like this showing up, although the yellow star is a bit obtrusive.. but I enjoyed the clips, but they pretty much convinced me I'll be adding this to my Netflix list, and not seeing it in the theater.. :-)

I enjoyed Miss Crow's stuff more, frankly..

But what the heck, they'll be gone in a few days.

Movie Trailers - this is great!

I wish it was in the showcase though....

Posted by: withfries2

I like the movie trailers too. I'm not a big Adam Sandler fan, but if Tivo can get some marketing dollars from the movie studios for this (and make it more likely that they'll be around for the long-term), I vote Thumbs Up!

This brings up an interesting question.. IS all this yellow star stuff eventually heading to the point where we would only get promos for things that we like based on our thumbs rating?

If that is the case, than that would be a great thing for all involved... Better audience targeting ,etc.

Now that is a cracking idea. If this is all leading to where we get targeted promos or even if we get the chance to thumbs up/down the stuff we are getting at the moment - in order to tailor the promotions to our tastes - that would be great.

This whole thing about the networks moaning we are stealing programming by not watching the adverts winds me up. I like to buy stuff. :D
I still watch adverts. I just fast forward through the ones I'm not interested in, like BowFlex, Miss Cleo, BowFlex, Juiceman, BowFlex, Posturepedic beds, BowFlex. Oh, did I mention BowFlex? I still watch most car ads , funny ads and tech related ads like the new Gateway Desktop one ;)

Just my 2p

It could happen. The capability for that type of targeting is already in there. But, obviously, they'd need a lot more promos to put on the units to be able to target people with them.

Posted by: stevel

I can't stand Adam Sandler, but the movie promos were fun to watch. (I especially enjoyed noticing a snippet of a classic Yes tune...

Posted by: bonscott87

This is the type of promotion I've been waiting for. This is awesome! Although I have no desire to watch this movie, I WANT MORE TRAILERS!!!! Send me more, please. Let Universal, MGM and the others have a Showcase all their own where movie trailers are updated every week. Keep 'em coming TivoPony!

Posted by: arkham999

I like trailers. I buy a LOT of DVDs. Show me trailers of new movies, and show my trailers of movies coming out on DVD, but use my thumbs to determine which ones to show me. Since I have an Adam Sandler wish list, I'd want to see this one. Just don't advertise "The Piano" to me or I might puke.

Posted by: mtchamp

The trailers were very much appreciated, as I go to the movies almost every week. This is a giant leap forward for TiVo. It proves they can make the TiVo subscription more valuable by delivering a feature many people will appreciate, especially more so when there is a greater variety of trailers.

I watched them over and over again, even though it was mostly to hear that little bit of Classic Yes music "I've Seen All Good People". They are coming to the Tweeter Center near Boston in July and I might just go see them again for about the 20th time. The trailer is making me want to buy tickets to Yes, never mind the movie.

While on the subject of music, I had a WishList set for Blink 182, who remind me of my punk rock days in the early 80's. This morning I had a rerun of Saturday Night Live in Now Playing on TiVo with guess who as the musical guest. That's right, Blink 182. TiVo, I could have kissed you this morning. I don't have time to watch MTV all day, so I wished for it with TiVo and there it appeared this morning, like magic!

Yeah, I had an auto-record wishlist for a non-mainstream punk bad: Saves The Day. My TiVo got their FIRST ever performance on national television. (On Craig Kilborn's late night show, and then again on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.) Good job TiVo! :)

I guess I'm the only person who likes to listen to directv music channels while I sleep, and am definitely not happy to have that taken away or else be awakened to Adam Sandler screaming in my ear at 3AM. So a little secret on how to delete the promotion after the download is useless to me. At this point all I can say is "goodbye TIVO, hello Moxi (or whomever)." Feel free to tell your bosses, like I'm sure they care.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I love the idea of movie trailers on my TiVo.

I get a movie trailer, and a couple clips from the movie, delivered to my doorstep. Furthermore it doesn't take any effort on my part and it doesn't even take up any of my recording space.

No more worrying about stopping for movie ads while fast forwarding, and I don't have to record every episode of "Coming Attractions" on E and try to find what I'm looking for. Hell, I didn't even have to pay $7 to see it in front of some other movie.

Chreryl Crow and whatnot was ok - but this is definately where its at. Bring it on - I'm game.

Harvey Keitel's full frontal scene.

I couldn't eat for days after seeing that! :D

But yeah, more movie promos would be a Good Thing. Oh, yeah, and Michelle Branch. I could do with some Michelle Branch TCP action, even with dumb Best Buy Feng Shui ads.

Mr Pony,

I have yet to hear why we can't delete the spam even after viewing. Please clarify who's interest this is serving. My email to Tivo asking how to delete it was ignored.

Yes, I am one of the whiners who purchased tivo as an escape from advertising.

Thank You

Actually, it's three different promos each about two minutes long. Individually they are entertaining but, frankly, taken together they leave the impression that there are only about eight jokes in the movie. The three clips are redundant and a bit confusing. Only the third one makes sense in context.

I think something was lost in the translation to the TiVo environment. They just threw three clips at the box hoping something would stick. They could have been MUCH better if edited into one five-minute clip.

In other words, I liked the concept and would like to see more movie trailers. But give us a break and put some quality into the presentation.

Yea, like Moxi (or whomever) *won't* be spamming you worse then you feel Tivo is. Get a grip.

Although I understand why you don't want them recorded at 3am, all the other DVR's have much worse (in my opinion) advertising. You aren't going to get away from it and you are only fooling yourself if you think you can. Disble Discovery channel and you'll get away from it mostly on the Tivo.

Remove Discovery from "Channels You Receive". I don't receive Teleworld for any number of reasons and have yet to receive any sort of advertising on my TiVo.

Well I was going to try that, but maybe I need to work on this "grip" thing and not criticize precious Tivo :p

Well, under ordinary circumstances ("Wah, there's a yellow star that I don't even have to look at") I'd be with everyone else on that whole "grip" thing.

However, being awoken at oh-dark-thirty so it can record Adam Sandler very loudly for you is certainly a gripe-worthy thing, I think.

Sleep is a precious thing! :) So if you don't watch Discovery, remove it from CYR and you'll never have to deal with it again. :-D

I like it, especially how it grabbed multiple trailers or extra info. If TiVo has to have ads, movie trailers are a great thing to put up there. Actually, I liked the Sheryl Crow video also.

Movie trailers are fun, but they don't belong undeleteable in the main menu. I never look at spam. Why not put trailers in Tivolution magazine or some other section? Or for god's sake just let me delete the damn things.

The trailers are using disk space you don't have access to anyway, so who cares if they're there or not.

I dig the idea of TiVo delivering more trailers to Now Showing. If they could include more trailers, and showtimes for local theatres I think it would be a great plus.

Actullay, I just wanted to see how my new Avatar looks.

this is just the start. tivo are obviously testing the waters to see how many people complain. just like any other large corp they're looking for alternate sources of revenue, and there must be pressure on them from the advertisers as well.

i can see it now, version 3.5 having pop up/layered ads running while we use our f-forward, 30 sec skip or pause buttons. mark my words it's coming. or even worse tivo inserted commercials that are unskip-able at the start of each show or each time we jump from one menu to another.

bring on the hacks.

Seriously, has TiVo given any thought to the parental control issues? I don't like the idea that these clips can be seen regardless of the settings in parental controls.

You can. See my post on how to do it. It takes all of 3 minutes to do.

I too think I wouldn't mind the ads so much if they were targeted based on my thumb ratings. Heck, I might even grow to like 'em as long as I felt that the privacy of these ratings was respected.

In general, trailers? Yes!!!! Moremoremoremoremore!!

However, one refinement that I haven't seen that Bob might want to pass on to Columbia. The opening animated bit where the Deeds comes up, and then is crushed by the June 28? Lose it. I watched all three trailers, and it was senseless the first time and annoying by the second. Part of it was the wasted few seconds of my time, and part was that idiotic "whump" sound. If they want to make sure we know when the movie opens, they need to find a faster, silent way to let us know, be it overlay, or quick flash at the beginning and end of the trailer.

If the trailer's good, people will take note of the opening day. Too much effort's just going to make it look like they're pushing too hard.

Keep it tasteful, Tivo, and all but the smallest minded of us will be glad to put up with a star or two.

I don't know if anyone else has posted on this. I loev the concept of putting trailers on the Tivo. These are ads I have NO problem with. However, please please please please PLEASE make them higher quality than the Mr. Deeds trailer. Between the darkness of the video and the muffled sound, I didn't even bother watching it, despite having already intentionally seen it a number of times. It was very poor quality. Just a thought.

According the reviews, there isn't much humor.

Here's what Variety started its review with:

Excerpt from Variety review

Commentators inclined toward grand pronouncements will find in "Mr. Deeds" everything they need to sound off about the withering of Hollywood movies in particular and American culture in general from the 1930s to today. People who just call 'em as they see 'em need only note that this remake of one of Frank Capra's most famous pictures is a perfectly dreadful film and leave it at that. Either way, this is an embarrassment, a dimly unresourceful reworking of a rich if corny premise that just goes to show that you solicit comparison to such big boys as Gary Cooper, Capra and screenwriter Robert Riskin only at your own peril.

If I have learned anything in life, it is not to trust movie reviewers. For some reason they hate good movies, but love those weird foreign films you have no interest in seeing.

-The Simpsons :) :D   :p

as one of the more vocal opponents of the
stars and ads i will say i am very glad tivo changed
their strategy to not place the star/ads if the discovery
channel is not available.

i haven't seen an ad in what seems like at least
6 months and i am a VERY happy user.

i still won't go out of my way to reccomend buying
a tivo to others though.

im still a happy user.

I'm with you. Just curious what discovery channel did to get mixed up with the tivo spam. I think I can live without it, to be spam free, but it seems unfair to discovery channel. Won't they get mad when everyone bags their channel? Why couldn't they tag a useless god channel? Blocking a channel, seems like a short term fix. No one at tivo will say why the spams aren't easily avoidable or even deletable without cryptic back-door commands.

Sorry Discovery, I liked you at one time, but you are too mediocre and the spams are too annoying. :(

Nope, I'm certainly no expert in Moxi, but then neither are you. You seem to claim that Moxi will be better in their advertising then Tivo. You know no more then me, but you can bet advertising will be there because it is the trend.

Ahh, let's see if I have the other DVR's straight:
1) Replay TV - Puts ads in your face after pausing for more then 30 seconds
2) Ultimate TV - had "banner" type ads on a lot of screens.
3) Tivo - Records Discovery channel (if available) to put things in the showcases and has the yellow star.
4) Dishplayer, 501, etc. - Not sure
If I am mistaken on any of these, then I apologize for posting wrong information.

Of all of these, Tivo has the least "in your face" advertising. I can ignore the yellow star and I can never go into the showcases if I want. Obviously you are one of the few where switching the tuner at 3am is a bad thing. Sure, Tivo needs to see if they can improve this so it isn't a problem, but I only said get a grip because you make it sound like it's the end of the world. There are several things you can do to make the ad recording *not* take place and you can even hack the Tivo to make the star go away if you choose. All of these are well known. I know of no way to avoid the advertising on either Replay or UTV.

So yea, get a grip. Do what *you* need to do so that Tivo works the way you need it to and then ask Tivo to make it better (which you have). That's all anyone can ask for.

I saw the green "The preview is suitable for ALL audiences" screen somewhere in the promos. I doubt Discovery is going to air anything too risque, even it if is in the middle of the night.

I think TiVo is a great product and hope the company prospers.

Yes, I'm one of those who are disappointed that advertising is creeping into my TiVo...I have expressed myself in this regard in other threads.

Now here is my issue...I really want to see "the other side", so I know that some sort of advertising will be "here to stay". BUT; I'm sure getting tired of seeing "Mr Leeds" promo sitting on my main menu AND on the top of my "Showcase menu" for weeks on end...it was the first and only promo that has appeared on my TiVo. (g) So, if I'm willing "not to hack" or all the other "stuff" that members are threatening to do to remove the promos, I ask 'ya....PLEASE GET RID OF MR LEEDS AND WHILE YOUR AT IT SEND ME ONE OF THE NEW PROMO'S THAT I SEE OTHERS GETTING. (G)
Now...isn't that a "reversal of fortunes...of sorts" for you to read...I'm "asking" to see some new promo's? (g) (g) After seeing the Mr. Leeds guy get his foot clobbered..."Hey, I'm only kidding"...plus reading the reviews of the movie, I've about decided that your promo's are probably the best parts of the pix, and plan to skip it.

Let the NEW promo's begin! SOON PLEASE!

PS: What are the chances that TiVoPony will see this comment since it's buried within this thread? I'm never quite sure how I can "copy" one of these comments to a particular member. Perhaps some MOD could pass it on to him. Thanx.

PPS: Sure glad we have TiVoPony on board. His replies always are helpful...this comment really doesn't require any response.

Whoops! I think it's Mr. Deed's. (g)(g)(g) Now wiping the egg off my face.
