ppp/serial with 3.0 not downloading program data

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm having no luck getting tivo's new PPP/serial support to get
my program data. Everything worked fine with 2.5.1 at 57600 talking PPP/serial to my freebsd firewall/nat system.

i've setup the dialing prefix of ,257 and the test calls are always working, but the daily call never gets prorgam data. The call status never shows an error, however, i'm now down to 3 days of data left.

/var/log/0messages has this line, but i think its ok.
pppd: couldn't restrint write permissions to /dev/ttyDss: read-only filesystem

pppd: Terminatin on signal 15
pppd: Connection terminated
pppd: Connect time 0.6 minutes
pppd: tcflush failed: invalid argument

/var/log/kernel shows valid PPP setup, and then i get a terminating on signal 15, and a bunch of messages tearing down
the PPP session.

Any ideas? I'm running out of time!

thanks,

Britt

here is my pppd line

pppd ttyd0 57600 noauth debug local nocrtscts mtu 1492 mru 1492 proxyarp persist 192.168.2.1:192.168.2.2

I've also tried it without the proxyarp and the mtu/mru settings.

Im a bit confused about your post: Are all your calls successful just the shows arent indexing?
Under System Info what does the guide data to date show?

Posted by: brittbolen

all the calls are claiming that they were successful, but my "guide data to" date, hasn't gone up in days.

sometimes the connection seems to get some guide data, and it shows the indexing in progress, but the "guide data to" doesn't change.

Hmm thats wierd. I had a similiar problem a while back in that my tivo would get the program data but wouldnt index it and the tivo would keep telling me its running out of data even though all the calls were successfull. You might want to try my solution in case it would solve yours:
event send 55 1 [binary format I 0]
Run that from tivosh and it will index anything that hasnt been indexed before. That might or might not be your problem, the reason I suspect it might not be is that even if the updates get the guide data and just didnt index it, the date in Program Guide Data To would still be almost 2 weeks away.

Good Luck! :).

Edit:
Be sure to give it a little while after you send the index event. If it has 10 days of data to index its going to take a few hours.

I have an HDR112 with no upgrades yet, running 3.0.01-1-000.

I have this same error in var/log/messages, except I can't get even the test calls to work. I used Otto's FAQ to set up my W2k PC to act as the PPP server, and have tried bps rates down to 9600 with the same result- TiVo and the W2k box agree they're connected, and I can ping the TiVo when it connects, but after 500 bytes or so it stops talking and eventually hangs up.

I have: Tivo - serial - W2K PC - linksys BEFSR41 - cable modem.

There's a post in another thread from evvo about a message he sees in var/log/tclient that you might want to look for:
quote:
"DL|38", "connection to host 204.176.49.38,8080, err 0x50005", "tmk tcp connect failed, reason = Operation now in progress"

I get this message too, but right away, just after
sending message "ST|33"
CommUtil: connection to host 204.176.49.2, port
(runs off my TV screen)
err 0x50005

I have to wonder if this message is tied in somehow, as it seems to un-linux-guy me that maybe there are two tasks trying to start a pppd session at once... I haven't seen anyone followup to evvo.

Maybe someone will read this and see how it all fits together? I can't think of anything else to try. (hope hope hope)

I'm having the same problem, see my post in the following thread:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...&threadid=65402

No solution, but the problem isn't in the TCP connection (shown in your logs). The problem is that the TiVo seems to be sending an LCP packet instructing the PC to disconnect -- which it happily does. Once this happens, the TiVo no longer has an internet connection which causes the tclient error you see.

Someone help! Am I just going to have to wait for my TurboNet?

One solution- re-run guided setup. Your cable lineup name may have changed. Mine did recently and I had exactly the same problem you did- "successful" calls but no update for the guide data to date.

It has nothing to do with your PPP connection. This has happend to people with modems sometimes too.

Beg to differ -- it disconnects during downloads. If I reconfigure to use the modem (which is frozen in the off-hook position, hence the attempt to use PPP), I can do my daily call, get updates, etc.

It is definitely a problem with PPP -- at least in my case. Note, the problem we are describing is that it connects, checks account status, sets the clock (I even see the NTP traffic in the captures) then when it starts to download it suddenly disconnects.
