Witchblade Season 2

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

First impressions:

So far, it looks as good as Season 1. They're doing a good job of not just ignoring all that happened in Season 1 (which they easily could have done).

I wonder if Jake will get a bigger role as the season moves on.

And, finally, Yancy Butler is perfect for this role. I just can't imagine anyone else playing it. I can easily imagine other actresses for the other popular "super women" on TV now or in the recent past (Buffy, Xena, Sidney Bristow (sorry, never watched Dark Angel)), but not for Sara Pezzini.

Hopefully, Yancy Butler can just "kick the habit" and not let it ruin her life...

:(

Excuse me stupidity, but what habit?

She has an alcohol problem which stopped production, but it has since resumed.

My only problem with the show at this time is the flashing lights when she is fighting.

Exactly. It gets old rather quickly.

My 'other half' gets migraines often and the damn flashing lights don't help at all. She has to close her eyes during these sequences. :(

Posted by: mrmike

Plus, the flashes forced me to bump up my recording quality so that I don't get huge pixel-y icky garbage during the fight scenes. Lose the strobe lights, guys. They weren't as annoying last season or else I don't remember them as being so.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Other than that, the reset is looking like a really interesting twist on the original timeline.

Posted by: buffan

Yeah, they can definitely lose the strobe lights.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
I noticed on Monday's episode that the guy who plays Kenneth Irons is still "starring" in the show. What's up with that? Is he going to come back from the dead? Or is he going to be a clone like Ian was last year?

Posted by: Greg G

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Perhaps Irons will be the dead guy that talks to Sarah all season like her partner was last season.

Hey guys,

I've Tivoed the last few eps of Witchblade, but haven't watched them yet. Are any of the showings in Widescreen? I loved catching the Season 1 encores, because they were letterbox, and I could use theaterwide 2 on my Toshiba to fill my widescreen tv!

Thanks!

Not so far, sad to say...

Does anyone undertand what happned with Iron's assistant (forget his name - the nutty guy with the ponytail). I thought he was killed but he was in the following week's show. Did they change the order or am I just missing something?

Do you mean Ethen?

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

Ian. He was killed, but it turned out he was the latest in a series of clones grown for the purpose of serving Irons...and a defective one, as well (too much niceness). The new one was truer to the intended ruthless nature of the Ians.

The one we have this year is the defective one again (since he hasn't died yet). Having Irons in his head doesn't seem to have helped his mental stability very much...

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
He was killed, but Sarah used the power of the Witchblade to bring him back to life

At anyrate, I'm giving this show a few more episodes before I give up. The writting has taken an awful twist, IMO.

I have officially given up on this show. I deleted my SP for it last week. This is just my opinion, but I think the show is dumb.

I watched every episode from season 1. I loved it at first, but towards the end I really started getting sick of the same old crap every week. The season finale was excruciating in my book. I gave it a chance this season, but it's still more of the same old crap.

I think the guy who plays Ian Nottingham is a cool guy. I wish he'd get his own show or be in a movie or something.

I'm gonna have to add myself to the short list so far of people who do NOT like the new season.

As "b11051973" said in the previous post, last season started off strong and ended with a dull thud. After the season finale, I was left wondering exactly why I had bothered to watch the previous season, and what had been "real" and what was going to now be forgotten.

This season, however, I now sit and wonder exactly why I had bothered to watch the previous 60 minutes.

Each new episode is increasingly more boring and tedious than the one before. Yancy Butler generally walks around each episode with her face holding an expression as if she has the lingering taste of a fresh turd in her mouth. And when she does speak, I feel the intelligence being sucked out of me like a stale donut dipped in a glass of milk.

Sara's partners are both fairly useless, and seem to be running a weekly contest on who can keep their job as a detective while looking the most unwashed. I find the Irons/Nottingham relationship the most interesting in the show, though even after watching all of last season I still don't really have any idea who either character is.

I never read the comic book, so maybe I'm missing the subtle nuances that those fans can enjoy. But strictly as a TV show, I want to see less boring cop work and more Witchblade action. (And I agree...lose the strobe lights...we don't want to cause any seizures now, do we?)

And the last episode was the worst in this regard. Not only did they have strobe lights, but they also threw in frames of static every now and then. Time to turn of captioning and fast forward through the fight sequence.

This reminds me .. closed captioning for this show is odd, it's almost like it's captioning for the rough cut of the show, and not what we see. I can't think of examples right now, but there have been a couple of instances of captioning for something that never gets said that actually helps to explain the plot.

I have to admit, I feel like they pulled a fast one on me at the end of last season.

I became a fan of story arcs during Babylon 5, and I appreciated the fact that JMS had the guts to off Marcus, even though he was one of my favs. In ST:TNG, they would have never done that (and I'm a big fan of that show too!)

Anyway, as the main characters were killed off in last season's finale, I thought, wow, they are radically changing the show. Then, someone dug out the old RESET button, and pushed it. What a disappointment.

Posted by: tgr131

One of you guys mentioned you never read the comic.

It's ok as comics go. High T&A factor -- Sara's clothes seem to disappear whenever the witchblade is in use.

It leans more on the horror/demon end than the show.

I keep getting it because the artwork is usually really good. The stories are uneven.

Well, I've watched all of the episodes since my "first impressions" post.

People say first impressions are the most important. True, but a good second impression would help. So far, I'm still waiting for a good second impression. The remaining episodes have been weak, and last night's was nothing but a standard rehash of a serial-killer cop show. To call it scifi or fantasy would be an enormous stretch. If I wanted a standard cop show, I'd watch "The Shield" (which I did, and thought it was quite good).

I really agree with tgr131. I like the story arc concept like B5, which "Witchblade" (or is that witch "Whichblade"?) did well last season, but I thought last year's season finale was a MAJOR cop-out.

"Oh, no, we killed everybody but Sara! Darn it, what were we thinking?!?! Quick, figure out how to bring 'em back!"

I'll probably at least finish out this season because there's only 6-8 hours left, but unless it improves, I don't care if there's a season three.

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

No, it wasn't a cop-out (clearly they didn't kill the characters and THEN decide what to do), and in fact, it was a wonderful opportunity, as can be seen by the VERY FEW times they have played with it this season; there have been some truly creepy moments. I also like what they've done with Ian/Irons. Unfortunately, this season they've done precious little with the continuity issues, and as has been said, most of it has been depressingly ordinary cop junk.

THat's really too bad, because for a moment it looked like they were doing something truly unique and fascinating, but I guess their reach exceeded their grasp.

(And for those who were talking about going to the comic for clarification, ha! The comic is truly repulsive cheesecake garbage, which makes almost no sense whatsoever; even in its current sad state, the show is far better, and last year it was almost infinitely better.)

Posted by: buffan

You are correct that they clearly didn't kill the characters and then decide what to do. But I still think it was a cop-out.

It's like the author who writes an entire story, and then ends it as a dream. Or an entire season of "Dallas" being written off as "it was a dream." It's just lame. They get you wondering..."what will Sara do with so many of her supporters dead", and then they just bail out. If you can't figure out how to have a satisfying ending with the characters dead, then don't kill them!!

Anyway, that's just my personal opinion, and other people may not agree with my dream analogy, and may have found the end satisfying. I really didn't like the ending to last season, despite having really enjoyed everything up until then.

Now, "Buffy", there's a show that knows how to kill off major characters. Lots of practice. But there's more than enough Buffy threads on this board, so I'll refrain from commenting further.

By the way, there was one instance when the whole "it was just a dream" was actually done well. "Newhart" ended that way with Bob Newhart waking up in bed with his wife from a previous show that Newhard had been in, and saying that he'd just had a dream about living in Vermont. Hey, it works in a comedy!!

Did somebody say that Pez used the witchlade to bring Ian back to life?

She never did that. Ian died. He was cloned by Irons. There's something odd going on there, that may pan out in the 2nd Season or perhaps 3rd.

But don't confuse 1st Season and 2nd Season. He has yet to die in the 2nd season, though Irons died in the first episode.

There are a lot of controversial mysteries going on that I find amusing. For instance, the Witchblade is of divine origin, and far predates most modern religions. I'd like to know the how and why of it, but doubt I will ever see that.

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

And I'm happy to see in the latest episode they got back into the complications arising from reliving Year One...let's hope they stick with that, and that things continue to get interesting again. There were some pretty doggy episodes there for a while...

Absolutely right on. I think this was the best series finale ever done, comedy or drama.

Did you miss Consectatio? Whether he was actually dead or not is debatable, I suppose...he sure looked it to me, though.

So when will Conchebar (Sarah's lover from Season 1) show up? He should still be alive.

(I may be way off on that name, but that's how I remember it.)

It has been made very clear on the show that time is not linear... ;)

Posted by: DanT

As for Conchebar, there was the rock star that died a couple of weeks ago. If you look at his poster in the nightclub, there was something about "the Son of Conchebar" on it. I thought that was a pretty good tie-in, since he did sound similar.

I'm glad to hear that this week's episode was good. I still haven't watched it, mostly out of apathy. Maybe I'll watch it tonight and with any luck it'll renew my interest in the show.

Posted by: tgr131

Wonder if the "White Bulls" and Jake FBI status are true in this new reality?

Noticed the "White Bull" cheif giving the briefing to the officers in "Nails" , when in fact, Sarah's reset had taken them back to the point where her dad's old friend was the chief.

Posted by: jasoncarr

I gave up the show a couple of weeks ago and killed the SP... :-(

Posted by: Fleegle

I haven't given up yet, and after tonight, I'm pretty glad. This was by far the best Season 2 episode yet.

...And it looks like Conchebar is going to be back next week! For some reason, I really identified with him last year.

Posted by: barclay

That episode was good?

I thought it was horrible. I feel the strange compulsion to finish the season, but I also feel they don't want me to, they're making the episodes so incredibly bad.

Posted by: JoeTiVo

Y'all might find this article interesting. Sounds like they're just happy they made it thru the second season. It's still up in the air if there will be a third.

I killed my SP about 3 weeks ago. I just couldn't hang any more.

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

I'm with fleegle. If only they'd been doing this stuff all year...

Looks like they're going out with a bang, however.
