Thanks (I think).

So I was worried that there would be nothing to watch during the summer. But then came along the "Best Shows on TV" and "Shows that Died Too Young" threads. I figured I better see what all the fuss was about, so I added in some new requests for TiVo. Be careful what you wish for, I guess.
Now, I have a whole new set of problems. I am pretty much obsessed with Buffy. I had never seen even one episode of Buffy before, but FX started showing reruns at the very beginning of the series, right when everyone kept saying it was the best show on TV, so I thought I'd just give it a little teeny try, and now I can't stop watching it. Of course, I'm about six years behind the ball here, but, hey, you do what you can.
Oh, and Sports Night is pretty darn good too.
Thanks! :D
Anyone else expanding their horizons?

I added SPs for Farscape and Coupling. I used to watch Farscape during the first couple of seasons but forgot about it. Now with the magic of TiVo I can watch it again! I'm a little lost, but I'm sure watching a few eps will straighten me out ;)
I haven't seen an episode of Coupling yet, but am looking forward to it!

:D Yep, I did the same thing, ran through those threads and started marking some stuff for either Wishlists or SPs to try 'em out. I'm trying Alias, CSI, The Shield, can't remember what else at the moment. Was already watching Sports Night.
Another thing I do is scroll through History, Discovery and The Learning Channels every few days to see what's coming up in the following few days, they have such great specials. Wish I had time to watch all 1,000,000 of the series they have between them of the real-life forensic type stuff, I'm fascinated by those shows.
Now to just find time to WATCH all that I'm recording..... :p

I think we all scanned through those threads looking for new stuff.
So far, I'm hooked on The Shield, but I've got a couple others set to record here in the next couple days.

Watched an episode of Coupling over the weekend, and I'll have to say I wasn't impressed. Maybe I just don't "get" the british humor, but I didn't think the show was anything special, and definitely not better than Friends.
On a side note, why do all the colors on BBCA shows seem washed-out? i.e. compared to regular US TV...

Now that we have TiVo, we're eatching Alias. Never saw during the season but catching every one of the repeats this summer. I am so loving this show....It's right up there with CSI as my favorites....

Coupling is a great show!!! I've seen the first two seasons and I hear they're currently filming the 3rd. I sometimes find it hard to 'get' British humor too and a couple of the episodes are kind of weak, but the ones that aren't weak are hilarious.

Enjoy the Buffy's Ruth.
I did the same thing as I had never seen it and started watching it last November.
It was tough sometimes to keep up with 10 episodes a week (I assume they still show 10 a week) but it was well worth it. Now whenever I see somebody start doing the same thing I must admit to being envious because you are in for some real treats with that show and you don't have to wait weeks to see what happens next.
Enjoy it!

Hey-- nice to seem someone from Decatur! I grew up there.
When my fiancee and I caught the 'Buffy bug', it was in our pre-TiVo days. We found someone to make us copies of the first five season and blazed through them all in about two months. There's nothing like an 8-hour Buffy marathon!

Like I said, I only saw one Ep. I didn't delete my SP, so I will give it a few more chances to impress me. The one I saw was about the one guy who was going to sleep with the one chick but had an attack from The Melty Man. Midly amusing, but nothing to write home about, IMO.

Blah-
Yeah, the Melty Man episode wasn't one of the funnier ones. I'm glad to hear you'll give it another chance. One particular episode about Jeff's birthday is especially funny. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the ep.

Unfortunately this is a side-effect of the conversion from PAL to NTSC. The same thing happens to US shows aired in the UK - the colours look a bit flaky.
I may be mistaken but I believe this should eventually be a non-issue with the storing of the shows in digital format - depending on the format of course!
You mention British humour being hard to 'get'. American humor can sometimes be equally hard! I have tried several episodes of Seinfeld, but just don't get it at all. On the other hand, King of the Hill is hilarious.
I also never liked the Monty Python series in the UK, but loved their films. Go figure.
As an observation - there seems to be a lot more sarcasm in British humour - although I was always told sarcasm is the lowest form. Maybe that's why I enjoy it so much :D
Cheers,
Ears.

I'm American and don't find Seinfeld funny at all either and I like to think I have a good sense of humor. I loved some of Monty Python's stuff though. I typically find that British comedies are much better written. A lot of subtle humor that I really enjoy. BBCA is one of my favorites. :)

That's too funny, because I LOVE Seinfeld. Easily one of my favorite shows ever. It seems there are many people on this board that dislike it though. Personally, I think the humor (or is it "humour" for you brits ;) ) is also loaded with a lot of sarcasm, so it seems like I should like Coupling. Like I said, I'll have to give it a few more tries.
Thanks for the explanation on the PAL/NTSC issue. Makes sense now that I think about it. :)

I too made note of a few shows that people had mentioned, but as it turns out my original impressions were correct. All the shows people raved about, but I initially thought were terrible (Buffy, Coupling, Shield), were proven to be terrible after I watched them.
All of the best shows (CSI, Alias, etc.) I watched from the beginning, so I still have hardly anything to watch during the summer, and my horizons have not been expanded.
Stew
PS. I think I would enjoy SportsNight, but don't want to get interested in a show that won't have new episodes.

My favorite comedy is Red Dwarf. :D

<wheeze>
heh. :D
Go here. to purchase the first 3 seasons of Farscape on DVD. It will be in Region 2 and the US is region 1. You will need to find a region free DVD play like many Apexes are. Current season in SciFi is season 4 and we just saw episode 3 of season 4. I've seen most of the episodes and I'm still lost in some areas. Getting the DVDs is on my "ToDo" list pretty much at the top. :D

There are still 10 new eps per week. My obsession makes watching them no problem. And thankfully they are run at times when I can nab them all w/o giving much else up. It is cool to see a whole season in a week or two -- no time to get impatient. Also, I started doing this early enough in the summer that I think I can TiVo most of Season 6 in reruns, dump it to VCR, and watch it once I'm done with the syndicated stuff . . . so I think that I should be able to watch Season 7 in the fall and pretty much know what is going on.
All in all, I'm in Buffy heaven! :D

Sing it, Brother dplatt!
We just finished an 8-hour Buffyfest ourselves. I have a new co-worker who had never watched the show so we tied him down and made him watch WTH/The Harvest, Angel, Surprise, Innocence, Passion and Becoming I and II. He was a little bleary-eyed when we finished, but I think we converted him!
And, in a moment of personal growth for me, I didn't leave the room in Passion when Giles comes home and finds the roses and the wine and the note from "Jenny" saying, 'upstairs'. Usually, I bolt before that--it just hurts too much to watch that scene. Tonight, I was strong. :)
