State v.

Well I'm dumping my L&O: Crime & Punishment SP and keeping State v.

This show was put together in a better format and I really enjoyed it. The behind the scenes action in the jury room and the whole coin-flip nature of the legal process was layed out and I found it fascinating. Worth a look if you like legal dramas or are interested in the legal process, IMO.

I'm L&O'd out so I never considered watching the Crime & Punishment version. But I have to agree with you about State v. It was fascinating -- primarily because of the jury room footage. I'm amazed they were able to film it.

Haven't seen my L&O: C&P recording yet... but I did watch State v. (knowing that ABC did a good job with Boston 24/7 and I liked the premiere of Houston Medical).

Definitely will keep the State v. SP. Near the end, I was actually yelling at the TV... "TAKE THE DEAL!" and just groaned when they showed what happened.

I think that it was also interesting about the Jury... especially when they also show the Jury selection.

Is this drama or reality TV?

Both. ;)

Reality TV is what ABc sells it as for ratings attention. I hate to label this as a reality show, with it's associations of Survivor, et al. as I find this is really a documentary.

I know what you mean, I really felt for him when I saw the epilogue. While I don't know if I shared her view completely, that lady on the jury who was holding out really earned my respect with her argument.

I just heard about this show from 'The Daily Show'. The creator or something was on the other night talking about it. I went out and added a SP. I guess I didn't know that there had already been an episode on. Hopefully they rerun it sometime and I'll catch it.

C&P is from the producers of L&O, but it is not a L&O spinoff show, nor is it fiction; it is a "behinds the scenes look" at the cj system.

"State v." is also a reality tv show. I believe there are 5 or 6 episodes running this summer, each focusing on a different case.

The difference is that--I believe-- "State v." is from the ABC news division, but C&P is from the entertainment division of NBC.

From mediaweek's marc berman's June 14th programming insider column:

-The Premise:
In this new non-scripted documentary-drama from Law & Order series creator Dick Wolf, a new and real life trial is presented each week. In Sunday's series opener, Deputy District Attorney Dan Goldstein prosecutes the case of James Dailey, who is suspected of murdering his ex-wife after a heated confrontation.

-The Scoop:
What do you get when you combine the formula of the ultra-successful Law & Order franchise with the non-scripted reality genre? Quite possibly the standout new series of the summer, and hopefully many more summers down the road. If you're a fan of Law & Order and want a glimpse of some real life trials this is the perfect fit out of Criminal Intent and the welcome alternative to the usual array of reality/game shows in the summer. For anyone who thinks the non-traditional season is just a dumping ground for leftover and "B" level programming, watch Crime & Punishment and you may very well be singing a different tune,

If you've read this far, check out None dare call it a documentary, a great USA Today article about the crop of "reality based" tv shows which shun the documentary moniker in favor of a more "entertainment-oriented" niche name.
