DVR or PVR what's the difference?

I see the terms switched back in forth so what's the difference?

Do you think any name is better?

The way I've seen the terms described:

A DVR is just that, a digital VCR. It allows you to manually record stuff onto a digital medium, like a DVD-R or hard drive.

A PVR has some "personalized" functionality and pseudo-intelligence built in to assist. Like season passes, suggestions, and more.

Well what I mean it this, DVR / Digital Video Recorder or PVR / Personal Video Recorder. I see one or the other catching on, Do you...

Or is there really a technical difference?

I think "TiVo" is going to be the generic term for a video recorder, like Xerox, Kleenex, or Band-Aid.

True it maybe

I think your right....

I asked question, Because I'm will be producing a device so TiVo or ReplayTV can work with 4DTV (C-Band Satellite) So www sites/name came to mind and WWW.TiVo**********.com, I think would be way to much trouble Made the site name www.PVRBlackBox.com over DRV******.com
So I asked if there's a difference in the terms, But I'm keeping above name

Content producers are terribly afraid of the word digital, becuase it makes them think immediately of millions of perfect copies, so I'm sure TiVo tried to make their product more palatable by avoiding the use of that word.

However, consumers understand the word digital better, and naturally started calling the product 'DVR', rejecting the wishy-washy 'PVR.' I suspect that consumers will win, and the htings will be called Digital Video Recorders.

Properly best said. They where calling it PVR back a 4-6 months ago, And now they are referring it to a DVR. So consumers maybe winning here.

I agree with Pan, "Digital" seems like the way to go.

But other than PVR (Personal Video Recorder) and DVR (Digital Video Recorder), there is yet ANOTHER name for TiVo which isn't often referred to as. That term is Digital Network Recorder. That's what is says on the Sony SVR-2000 box! (no joke!) So I guess that would mean another term that can be used is DNR! I don't like that, but nonetheless it appears on the Sony box. FYI that's not the only thing that is different about the Sony box.

Yeah, good point! Now that would really be confusing to someone if they heard you ask them to check out your brand new DNR! :p

Isn't a DNR what people sign so they aren't put on life support. "Do Not Resuscitate"

That's what my friend thought when he went for a digital exam in the hospital. It wasn't until he was told to pull up his knees and relax that he realized they were talking about a different digit
