Is there a way to tell Tivo that you like a program but you don't want it to record it as a suggestion ?

No - I understand your question exactly. For example, we have an SP for The Practice to record first run only. We now get all the reruns in suggestions, which we don't want. I want to thumbs down The Practice, so we don't clog up suggestions with reruns, but we still want to get programs *like* The Practice.

How can we *not* get reruns of programs we like, but still not skew the suggestions?

Unfortunately no there is not. Many people have suggested that TiVo should allow you to remove a certain show from the list of shows that might be suggested, but right now we cannot.

Keep in mind though, if you have a "season pass" to a show, it WILL NOT appear on your suggestions list. (Because if you have a season pass to a show, every episode gets recorded anyway, so no episode would appear as a "suggestion".) So if this show you like...if you have a season pass for it, you don't have to worry about it every being a suggestion. But for shows you DO like and don't want as a suggestion, right now there is no way to tell your TiVo to "not record it". Hope this helps. :)

Uh, sorry - that hasn't been my experience. RE: my example of the The Practice above. It has no thumbs rating, but we still get lots of reruns as suggestions.

This is not correct I have an season pass FRO and the reruns do show up sometimes as suggestions.

My message states that if you have a season pass to record every episode of a show it would be IMPOSSIBLE to have that show recorded as a suggestion. That is true. However, in your case you do not have a season pass to record every episode, you have it on first run. Thus, there will obviously be episodes which can be recorded as a suggestion rather than a season pass.

You took my reply out of context. I said:

Since, I said every episode, that implies that every episode will be recorded, which is a full season pass. That does NOT apply to first-run.

Answer: yes, you can thumbs up other shows you like too. If it's recording only thumbs up shows, then you haven't given it enough info for any other nonrated shows to rise to the top of the suggestions. Think of it like this: If I thumbed up Whose Line and the Drew Carey show, then other things with Drew Carey in them would become higher ranked than either of the ones I thumbed. Because my explicit ratings only change the ratings of shows I haven't thumbed yet. It doesn't need to guess the rating for shows I have thumbed, because I've explictly given it a rating. Get the idea?

Oh, and I hate Drew Carey.

OK, here's your whole quote - sounds like you didn't notice that I had set the SP for first run only. Of *course* it won't record a program as a suggestion if you've already set an SP for *all* programs.

What we need (as you said - asked for by many) is a way to never record certain programs as suggestions, without it affecting the thumbs ratings. The way I see it now, if I TD The Practice so I don't get reruns, it will reduce the number of suggestions of the same genre that TiVo selects.

I don't mind the suggestions. What I'd like to see is a way to screen things out of a WL. I have an actor WL for Arnold, for example, but would like to be able to tell it not to record what I have on DVD.

Yep, others on the Suggestion Forum have asked for a "not" search option like: "Schwarzenegger not Terminator" etc.

I still like the idea of just removing a certain suggestion from your suggestions list. It is as quick and easy as removing something from your Now Playing list.

Yeah, that would be the easiest way to stop it. However, putting thumbs down to shows you don't want to be recorded can mess up your suggestions as a whole. If I did not want The Simpsons, Futurama etc. to be recorded as a suggestion, I could just remove it from the suggestions list, and my TiVo will still be able to record shows such as Family Guy (because my thumbs up shows are comedic cartoons, hence it would suggest that). However, if I just gave it thumbs down, TiVo would think I don't like TheSimpsons and Futurama, and would stop suggesting comedic cartoons. Thus, if you just put "thumbs down" for the shows you like just because you don't want them to be recorded, your suggestions will begin to vary and differ from your actual taste in TV shows.

I hear ya'. That just get's back to the concept that we should have a "never record" (press TD 4 times?) setting that didn't otherwise affect suggestions.

Even worse- I season passed Law and Order on NBC, and thus I get tons of suggestions for L&O off of USA and A&E where they're in syndication. Season Passes are channel specific, so if it plays on another channel you can easily get it as a suggestion.
