Cannot stop Stuttering in my Tivo

Greetings Tivo Community,
I am at a loss on why every config I have tried seems to cause my Tivo to Stutter. The picture freezes and garbles with the aduio tracks. It is enough to make me want to pull my hair out. I was using the original version of MFStools and a newer version of the documentation. The docs were stating use mfsbackup and all I could find was to use mfstool backup -o.
It works great for a few and off to stutter land.
I am using an 80 gig maxtor and 60 gig maxtor. If someone could shed some light before the woman makes me buy a factory tivo I would appreciate it.

How is the temperature of your TiVos? If it is too hot you would have this result. If they are in a cabinet they can get a bit warm. DTiVo's should be 55C or under, and SA's probably shouldn't be warmer than 48C at the most.

i too have a stuttering tivo with a factory quantum drive and a maxtor 80 gb. i don't know what the problem is either. i have posted in a few other threads.
my temp is find at 37C, and the drives passed the recertification and burn-in tests. presently I am testing a new ata66 cable to see if that fixes the problem. other people are having a problem and seem to suggest that it's related to version 3.0 of the software. my tivo appears to have been upgraded to version 3.0 a day before i put in the new hard drive. so i don't know what the problem is!

running with the case off - and about 5 degrees cooler - is not helping

I can't say that this is definitely your problem, but know that although Powermax (or whatever diagnostic program you use) reports the drive error-free, the drive still could be causing your freezing/stuttering problems.
My own TiVo had been running perfectly for a couple of years. It started to freeze once a week or so... I'd turn on the TV Monday morning to find the thing frozen in the middle of some Sunday night show.
Both drives tested fine with all Powermax tests.
I copied the contents of both drives onto two new drives and haven't had a problem since.

Try putting your TiVo drives back in your PC and use the Maxtor utilities wvset to turn off write verification and amset to turn off accoustic management. This has been known to help some installations.
