That happened on my Series2 after the 3.0 upgrade. It would download the software "update" every night, but fail to install it because it was already installed...
It fixed itself after a couple of days.
Did you try manually re-booting your Tivo??

"Pending Restart" usually comes up when a call hasn't gone through for many days, and your TiVo has to receive several days worth of data. It also, appears when you get a new software version. If this message keeps coming up on your TiVo, I would *assume* your TiVo, (for whatever reason) is having trouble installing the new software version 3.0. What software version are you currently running? If not that I'm guessing your calls have not been going through lately for numerous reasons. Hope this helps. :)

little background:
The unit has has 3.0 on it for at least the last two weeks. It's been making calls daily, and they've 'succeeded'. Another odd thing, a couple nights ago I got a message from Tivo dated 7/2001 ?!?!?!?!
The message said that I was going to receive new software that gave me more free space, and told me some details about seeing movie trailers before the movie came out.
Not sure what made Tivo download this message, especially if I've already been upgraded to 3.0
Could it be doing this "pending restart" thing because of the way I have it hooked up?
I originally had the unit hooked up in my bedroom (straight from the wall to the tivo, to the tv) and didn't have these problems.
As soon as I set Tivo up in my familyroom with a cable box (wall to cable box, to tivo, to tv)... it started doing this.
I've done a few softboots w/ it, and it still has went to 'pending restart'.... so tonight I'm trying a hardboot (unplug unit, wait a bit, plug in).
See if that clears up whatever it's trying to do.

This is very interesting. I don't ever remember ever reading something like this. The Free Space thing probably pertains to Save Disk Space. As for the movie trailer thing, could that be about those videoclips that appeared in showcases? If it is, this seems as if you got a message about the software version from 2.5. The date being from July is also interesting. Hmmm...I would consult with TiVoPony with this situation if nobody else knows anything about it.

Um, Keyser, you weren't a moron, were you?

I had this happen to me one time when I had moved my HD's over to my brother's network hacked TiVo from my un-networked TiVo. We were trading TiVo's because he had lost his internet connection and his modem was blown and mine was OK. They were both Phillips units but mine was originally a 14 hour and I think his was originally a 30 hour.
Anyway, after swapping the HD's into his TiVonetted box, I started getting the "pending restart" every night too. I made calls to tech support trying to get them to "trigger" some sort of software update, etc, on my machine so it wouldn't be dl'ing the new software every night. Nothing helped.
After at least two weeks of this happening my solution was to PM ***** here. He was very gracious and helped me get fixed.
Good luck!
-John
PS. Check your PM for more details.

lol... funny thread, but nope... no moron here.
I have put a larger drive into the unit, and installed the correct software (which have 2.5 on it).
Like I said... the odd thing is that it didn't start doing this until I moved the unit to the familyroom, and added a cablebox into the mix.
Don't know.

Okay: Pending Restart = it has new software and it will reboot at 2am to install that new software. If you want to force the issue, restart it right away. Beware that installing new software can take up to an hour or so, so don't do it 5 minutes before you have something to record. :p
If it's doing it every night, something is wrong. Call Tivo. However, don't call them if you did something that screwed it up. If you got a bash prompt and started mucking around in there, you can screw it up quite easily. In that case, restore your backup. You *did* make a backup, didn't you?
