Sony vs. Philips upgrade questions

I have recently completed a 2nd upgrade using MFSTools 2.0 on a Philips 312--adding a B drive; smooth after some initial problems. A year ago I made the initial upgrade by replacing the A.
Now I have a Sony 30 hr. that I want to upgrade with a Western Digital 7200 100 GB drive.
Just wanted to know if there are any differences with doing the Sony upgrade? Am I still going to see a locked drive? What is the issue with sectors? If I just want to add a B drive, why does it require taking out the A? How do the drop-in upgrade kits from eBay do it?

If you want to add a B, you can bless the drive and drop it in.
I have done this on 3 Phillips standalones and 1 crapped out. I made a backup from the one of the others and restored and it works great.
In other words there is a chance it will crap out and you will have to download a 300MB image from the net.
MFSTools 2.0 is the tool of choice and will work great if you want a quick backup.

That's what I thought. However, on my previous 'upgrade to an upgrade,' blessing the B and dropping it in didn't work. I had to make the A drive away with some add command. I assume this is because the A drive had already been expanded.
So if I had an original Sony and used BlessTiVo on a B drive, I assume I can just drop it in?

Hey roastbeef don't forget to backup your Sony before you start.
