Anyone watching American Idol?

If so, what did you think of last night's show?

I'm addidcted to that show. I thought last night's contestants weren't as good as the week before, and I have no idea why all the women LOVE Justine (EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!) (TM Televisionwithoutpity.com)

I am too, as much as I hate to admit it. :) I really think some of these people have a ton of talent. Although it seems that the girls are out-singing the guys by a long shot. I agree about Justin. His whole act is starting to get a little tired. Who would you like to see win out of the two groups so far?

Ryan Starr (f/k/a/ Tiffany Montgomery). I'd like a little bit of her, with the Shifafa on the Side. ;)

I have one huge complaint about American Idol - it isn't TiVo friendly. They allow you to vote for your favorite, but the phone lines are only open for 2 HOURS after the show!!! That means that if I watch the show the next day (as is more convenient for me), I miss out on the opportunity to vote for my favorites. They really need to put more time between the performance show and results show, and expand the voting window.

That is an irritation for me as well. I also think that we should be able to vote on the 'Net as opposed to just voting by phone.

Well, this definitely helps reduces time-shifting/non-live vieweing of the show which is something that Fox is not shy about discussing. You already notice the in-show ads for Coca Cola and Ford --- so they are definitely trying different things with the advertising.
In any case, the reason for the two hours is a few reasons:
-Reduce the possible mega expense of the voting popularity
-Reduce excessive vote stuffing
-Get the results in enough time before the live production the next day (include all the third-party validation to prevent legal action from those who don't make it)
The two days in a row thing is just the ratings ploy (very successful too).

You mean the show brought to you by Pepsi? Oh no, it's that other soda - Dr Pepper right? Or is it 7-up? Sprite?? I can't remember. ;)
From last night: Justin, Alexis (the first one, the 17 yr old), and I can't remember her name but she sang RESPECT I think.. Kelly maybe.

I'm sorry, but...
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
WHO THE HELL VOTED FOR A.J.?!?!?! He SUCKED!
Posted by: loopey
Damn it. You even put it in spoiler tags and I STILL read it (it was probably a pity thing due to what Simon said). Damn it I'm such an airhead. :(

Same 12 year old girls that voted for Jim last week.
Posted by: hotguy
i'm gay and i so have the hots for ryan starr! but i think it's because i want to be her.
Posted by: gadgetgrrll
Based on the votes from the last two weeks, I'm worried about our future American Idol. At this rate, it won't be anyone I'll want to see. I had checked out the Fox website for the show and read that one girl (12 years old) had voted over 1200 times. Wow... real talent doesn't stand a chance against that kind of voting.
I think Ryan is my favorite too for now. My favorite from last night didn't get in. :(

p.s. hotguy you cracked me up. :D

Well, I like Justin. The way he looks in the camera gets me. I think he's got "it" however you define it.
For the most part though, I think the show is terrible.

I enjoy watching the show. It's amusing. I wouldn't consider it good TV though. Most of the people don't seem that talented to me. A lot of people can sing and dance. They're not hiding that what it comes down to is marketing and pop culture tastes.
One thing I find amusing is how much better the judges think a contestant is if they do a little voice modulation on the final word of the song. "They gave it their own wonderful style!" Yeah right.
I think it's funny and ridiculous how every pop culture kid throws in all these unnecessary modulations, thinking it somehow makes the song better. It doesn't, it wasn't there in the original song for a reason. Occasionally it's a nice touch, but in those cases, it's usually a small part of a performance which gave spirit to the entire song in more than that one way.
Sorry, pet peeve. :D

Sinuralan, I believe that what you're describing as "voice modulation" is actually melisma. "Modulation" actually means something else: changing from one musical key to another (almost always higher) key. It's usually done only once (if at all) in pop songs, often right after the bridge.

I am just amazed on how bad the production and picture quality (faded, home video quality) are of the live shows on the West coast feed reply. Budget isn't that bad. CBS does a great job with the survivor specials so we know it is possible. This show looks like cable access quality sometimes.

Spire, I believe what I'm describing is BOTH voice modulation and melisma.
mod·u·la·tion (mŏj'ə-lā'shən)
n.
1. The act or process of modulating.
2. The state of being modulated.
3.
a. A passing or transition from one key or tonality to another.
b. The result of such a transition.
4.
a. A change in stress, pitch, loudness, or tone of the voice; an inflection of the voice.
b. An instance of such a change or an inflection.
But thanks for expanding my vocab a bit. Melisma would be more specific. :)Obviously though I'm speaking as a listener/watcher, not a musician.

West coast feed via what service? DirecTV?
The signal looks just as good as any normal premium channel I have via DishNetwork. On KTVU.
But I don't have a huge TV screen and watch on high quality (not best), so maybe I just don't notice these things.
Or am I misunderstanding? :)

Technically, yes, one of the rarely used senses of "modulation" could indeed loosely fit "melisma". I offered the word "melisma" to you only because to pretty much any musician, "modulation" has a very specific meaning, which is to change key.
Anyway, I wanted to add that melisma is one of my pet peeves too! :D There was a really funny article on the Web some time back about Mariah Carey and her role in starting the current melisma epidemic; unfortunately, I can't find the URL.

The show had fantastic quality recorded off of DirecTv...
Btw, I think people vote specifically for someone that Simon doesn't like on purpose. Alexis should have easily won over A.J.

This was on KTTV via cable. I know my KTTV cable picture is not the greatest, but not this bad when looking at other shows. I thought it was a feed issue. Guess I was mistaken, and it is a localized problem.

I didn't know the word 'melisma' until now, but I definitely hate when people do that! Sing a little bit of that constantly changing key and it's supposed to be great? No, thank you!
The show isn't all that great, but I Tivo'd it the first night just to see. I've been watching since. It has an amusing quality to it and it's very easy to FF past the slower parts. Simon's a little harsh sometimes, but there are an awful lot of people who've been in the competition who have a massively overinflated opninion of how certain they are to be rich, famous and everything we desire to love. Especially that Tamika girl who couldn't handle her first night rejection.

Uh oh.
From the site, "Controversy erupts! One of the contestants is caught in a lie and
disqualified!
Who is it?
Find out Tuesday!"

Hmm... I am wondering about this voting thing.
I was thinking people on the East Coast could vote for 5 hours (2 hours after west coast feed), but since people in Alaska and Hawaii can vote, I would think people on the East Coast would have 10 hours to vote on the contest and people in Hawaii 2 hours.
I don't get the impression they are using different phone numbers for different time zones, and I know the phone lines did not shut down 2 hours after the first episode aired in CST.

Bump.
Tonights episode should be good.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Supposedly Randy and Simon almost come to blows in a fight over a contestant, and another contestant (Delano) gets the boot because he is really 29, and you can't be older than 24)

Are you watching now? Turtleboy was right.....
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
All I can say about what just happened is WOW - That was some "disagreement"! Probably the best moment of the show yet!
Posted by: disco
Okay...vote for your favorite from tonight's (7.2.02) show...
Christina Christian (the last one...she BLEW ME AWAY!)
Posted by: DancnDude
I liked the girl with the redish hair - Nikki McKibbin
Posted by: gadgetgrrll
Not that many stood out this week for me. The only one I really felt was any good was Nikki. The last two weeks there have been at least three that seemed really good.

Woah, man, come on. Now you're stretching. Rare used senses of modulation? The PRIMARY sense of modulation.
modulation, noun. 1. The act or process of modulating
modulate, verb, verb transitive.
1. To adjust or adapt to a certain proportion; regulate or temper.
That alone fits just fine.
2. To change or vary the pitch, intensity, or tone of (one's voice or a musical instrument, for example).
You're telling me that PRIMARY DEFINITION of the word is a "rarely used sense" ?
Anyway, I'll just pretend you didn't say that. :P I DO appreciate the information on melisma. It fits. But modulate is still correct, accurate and clear to all competent listeners of the english language. =P

Yeah, she's the one who really started it. Who knows when it will end. It's so annoying.
<melisma>Look at meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee mom! IiiiiIIIIIIiiiIiiiIIIIIi'm AAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaA POP SSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTTaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaarr
rrrrrrraAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRaaaaaaRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr!</melisma>
I didn't really like most of the performers today. What makes me laugh though is when the performers, in response to criticism, say "well why don't you come up here and sing it better?" Hello. They're not auditioning. They don't claim to sing well. They claim to have experience judging.
