Failing B Drive

I have a UK Thompson Two Drive unit with 2.5.5 on it. The original B drive is making some very strange noises, and I was wondering how I could just divorce this drive without losing all my settings and recordings. I can't make a backup to my PC as I don't have enough hard drive space and I don't really want to buy a new hard drive to replace it.
