Corrupt Drive on DirecTivo, can I recover recorded files?

My DirecTivo died during a power outage, and now gets stuck during boot-up. I am going to take the opportunity to upgrade to a larger hard drive. After I apply a backup image to the new drive, can I copy my recorded files from the old drive to the new, working drive?
