Top 25 Buffy Eps. I'll start:

Angel, Surprise, Innocence, BB&B, Becoming 1 and 2, Faith Hope and Trick, Homecoming, Band Candy, The Wish, Doppelgangland, The Prom, Something Blue, Hush, Restless, Primeval, Fool for Love, The Body, Forever, the Gift, Once More With Feeling, Tabula Rasa, Smashed, Normal Again, Two to Go.

Next? :)

Picking ones you didn't...
How about The Zeppo,
Earshot (best double take, right up there with Band Candy),
Lover's Walk,
The Prom,
Graduation Day,
Halloween,
Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered, Passion (very chilling when Angel does the deed),
The Harsh Light of Day,
This Year's Girl/Who Are you?,
Superstar (the reason I got TiVo),
The Replacement (Snoopy dance anyone?),
Family,
Fool for Love/Darla (the Power four),
Crush,
Intervention,
Dead Things (SMG's performance is a knockout)

This grew out of a conversation about which 8 eps (from seasons one and two) we should screen for a newbie. From there we started talking about top 10, which we realized was completely inadequate and then fave 20, which still seemed to leave too many out and then finally a top 25, which was still hard. I had to leave off "The Dark Age", a personal fave.

In case you are wondering, we picked WTH, The Harvest, Angel, Surprise, Innocence, Passions, and Becoming parts one and two for our newbie friend's indoctrination this weekend. :)

Wow, 25. That's tough. Here we go, in chronological order:

Welcome to the Hellmouth
The Harvest
Angel
Prophecy Girl
Lie to Me
Ted
Surprise
Innocence
Becoming
Band Candy
Amends
Bad Girls
Doppelgangland
Graduation Day
Hush
Superstar
Primeval
Restless
Fool For Love
The Body
The Gift
Once More With Feeling
Normal Again
Two to Go
Grave

My top three are definitely Once More With Feeling, Hush, and The Body.

Damn, this is hard. I really needed a top 35 but here is my 25

"The Yoko Factor", "Once More, with Feeling", "Goodbye Iowa" and "Hush" are my personal favorites

What about Never Kill A Boy on the First Date? The final scene was just excellent! Definitely on the list of Season 1 must-see episodes, behind of course WTTH/TheHarvest, Angel, and Prophecy Girl. If you have time, add The Witch for its future implications on the Amy storyline.

OK, taking a different tack, let's break this down by seasons:

Season 1 (already mentioned):
1x01/1x02 Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest
1x05 NKABOTFD
1x07 Angel
1x12 Prophecy Girl

Season 2:
2x03 School Hard (introduction of Spike & Dru)
2x06 Halloween
2x09/2x10 What's My Line (Parts 1 & 2)
2x13 /2x14 Surprise/Innocence
2x17 Passion
2x21/2x22 Becoming (Parts 1 & 2)

Season 3:
3x03 Faith, Hope & Trick (introduction of Faith)
3x06 Band Candy
3x09 The Wish
3x10 Amends
3x12 Helpless (for the Watchers' Council)
3x14 Bad Girls
3x16 Dopplegangland (yowser!)
3x18 Earshot (just to shove it in the face of the Politically-Correct crowd)
3x20 The Prom
3x21/3x22 Graduation Day (Parts 1 & 2)

Season 4:
4x01 The Freshman (great foreshadowing at the end)
4x03 The Harsh Light of Day (but you'll need to see Angel 1x03 In The Dark for the second-half)
4x04 Fear, Itself
4x07 The Initiative
4x10 Hush
4x21 Primeval
4x22 Restless

Season 5:
5x01 Buffy vs. Dracula
5x05 No Place Like Home (Buffy learns about Dawn, Joyce gets sick)
5x06 Family
5x07 Fool For Love (combined with Angel 2x07 "Darla" for a history of Spike/Angel/Darla/Dru)
5x10 Into the Woods
5x12 Checkpoint
5x15 I Was Made to Love You (only for the introduction/implication of the Buffy Bot, and the lead-in to 5x16)
5x16 The Body
5x17 Forever
5x19-5x22 which is essentially a 4-part season finale

Season 6:
6x01/6x02 Bargaining (parts 1 & 2)
6x03 After Life (a continuation of Bargaining, really)
6x07 Once More With Feeling (musical episode, lots of good secrets revealed)
6x08 Tabula Rasa (perhaps the funniest BTVS episode, yet with serious ramifications)
6x13 Dead Things
6x16 Hell's Bells
6x17 Normal Again (I hope this isn't a hint on how they're going to end the show)
6x19-6x22 Another 4-part season finale

Okay, so I came up with 57 (plus two Angel crossovers) instead of 25. And there's only 122 episodes total so far. That's a pretty good average for what I consider must-see episodes. I guess it explains why I have every episode on tape (both SP and EP), VCD/SVCD, and DVD (per availability in Region 1; R2 imports are too expensive).

Posted by: Maui

Hmm, I'll have to think about this. I don't think my list will differ greatly from some of the others.

I think those are good choices for a newbie though. I know I got my brother hooked when I turned on the Thanksgiving day Bufy marathon at my parents house so I could rewatch Becoming parts 1 and 2. Part two hooked him.

Dan, that is a pretty good run down. Now just so that we make it clear, are you saying you have every ep in VHS SP, every ep in VHS EP, e.e.i VCD, and e.e.i DVD??
Not or? HFC!!!

Me? I am still going thru season 5 right now. Kind of sucks that Fx doesn't run some of the good ep. like Hush, Buffy v. Dra, The Body, etc....

There are a lot of good episodes, but so far these ones stand out:
Prophecy Girl,
Enemies,
Doppelgängland,
<Season4 was a dud. >
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Glad they said goodbye to Riley

Fool for Love,
Listening to Fear
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
just for the part where the ET jumps on Spike in the Dark. OMG!

..More to come

Are you sure? I know they didn't initially, but I know they *did* when they started playing them all from the beginning Jan 1, because I have them on tape from then.

I've seen about half the episodes only once (got hooked recently, TiVoed and dumped to tape (was pre-upgrade) seasons 2-5 off of FX, bought s1 on DVD, and now have s2 also) so I'm not *really* qualified to weigh in on this thread. Doesn't mean I won't:

Prophecy Girl, Surprise, Innocence, Hush, The Body

Those would have to be my favourites.

And of course, Once More With Feeling, which is the first one I've seen out of order since I started watching "for real" in January.

I don't get WB *or* UPN, so I'm not up to date on S6 yet, or much of Angel. <sigh>

Well, you better say "HFC!!!". I have every episode from Seasons 1-6 on VHS SP, almost every episode from Seasons 1-6 (missing a few from Season 6) on VHS EP which I use for loaners, every episode from Seasons 1-4 on VCD, every episode from Season 5 on SVCD (and a handful from S5 on VCD too), and every episode from Season 6 on either VCD or SVCD (or both). Then I have the Season 1 and Season 2 DVDs that were just released this year.

The problem with my VHS collections is that except for Season 6, they were recorded off the FX syndicated broadcasts. And those were edited slightly to make room for extra commercials. That just sucks. It's little things that most people probably wouldn't notice, but sometimes it's the little things that make the show so cool.

And I didn't start watching until the finale of Season 3 (Graduation Day), so my first real introduction was Season 4, which is by far the weakest.

I thought they started airing those again. They were just waiting for UPN to get a chance to air them during repeats in the late fall/early winter, and then add them to the regular FX schedule.

With such long lists, it's hard to discuss many details. My favorite is "The Prom". Seemed like that had the best of all the Buffy elements. For me, the show should have wrapped at the end of season 3. Season 4 & 5 just were not true Buffy. The two Faith episodes and the Angel crossover where they get together are the exceptions. The two Angel episodes with Faith were also pretty good. Other than that, the show has lost its magic.

OK, speaking as someone who doesn't have the episode names memorized, I'm going to hijack this thread, and turn it into "Favorite Buffy Scenes."

My favorites:
When Buffy finds out Glory isn't a demon. The look on her face, going from super confident super hero to "I just crapped my pants" without seeming to move a muscle on her face is some of the best acting I have ever seen on TV or in the Movies.

When Buffy bends the werewolf hunter's gun in half.

Angel snapping that neck.

Giles returning to face Darth Rosenburg.

The opening credits to Superstar

Season 6, when Buffy interrupts a normal mugging. (She says "I want a pony!" :D)

When Riley's boss brags about how he has killed 19 (that's NINETEEN) vampires, and then asks Buffy for her count.

When Willow was unknowingly omnipotent: "Amy's a rat, Amy's human, Amy's a rat." They brought back that actress for that one scene!

Any scene where Willow says "Bored now."

Xander's Dirty Harry speech: "This isn't the 'going drinking with your buddies' dead, this is the 'blown up into little bits' dead.

There are others, and my quotes aren't exact, but there you go.

Cool. I recorded the first FX run and just never really checked out the missing episodes until recently, so I will have to make a few of those Advance Wishlists to catch these the next time around.

Hey Phil, if you get a chance, rewatch the S5:Listening to Fear, the part where Spike is stealing Buffy's picture and then the E.T. jumps on Spike in the Dark. That is one of the funniest moments ever.

Philosofy in response to your take over :)

All of those are great. I happen to love this line a lot
"That probably would have sounded more commanding if I wasn't wearing my 'Yummy Sushi' pajamas." from Goodbye Iowa (season 4)

This from the first episode of season two
"Whatever is causing the Joan Collins 'tude, deal with it. Embrace the pain, spank your inner moppet, whatever, but get over it."

I also loved all the Star Wars jokes in season 6 with the Troika, the two that stand out are when one of them was painting the death star on the van, and the other was when Spike had the Fett.

The part from Once more with feeling that Anya sings about bunnies.

LOL-- my fiancee loved this line so much that she actually ordered the Yummy Sushi pajamas.

My favorite scene, hands down with no other even coming close, is Anya's speech about not understanding death in 'The Body.' I tear up just thinking about it.

I've not been a Buffy fan long enough to have memorized episode names, but if I were going to select just one Buffy episode to "convert" someone to watching Buffy, I'd chose the episode "Hush", which is not only one of my favorites but probably the only TV episode where most of the characters are unable to speak during most of the episode.

Unfortunately, although I am all caught up on previous seasons thanks to FX, I have not yet seen all of the current season; for some reason UPN is not repeating certain episodes - I have yet to see the Buffy Musical, for instance.

Okay this was harder than expected. Made me want to go back an watch a bunch of them!

I didn't though so this is off the top of my head (with a little help from buffyguide.com). I wound up with 27 but I decided to count the 2 two parters I listed as single episodes. Cheap, I know but I couldn't stand to cut any more from my list and it makes it come out to 25

There are also tons of great single moments in episodes that make me want to add others

School Hard
Halloween
Innocence
Passion
I Only Have Eyes For You
Becoming, Part One
Becoming, Part Two
Band Candy
Lovers Walk
The Wish
The Zeppo
Doppelgängland
Graduation Day, Part One
Graduation Day, Part Two
Hush
No Place Like Home
Checkpoint
The Body
Spiral
The Weight of the World
The Gift
Tabula Rasa
Normal Again
Seeing Red
Villains
Two to Go
Grave

Okay, I just finished watching my season one DVDs and have to wonder how I left off Prophecy Girl and wondering which one of the above to remove to make way.

Count 'Graduation Day' as one like I did so you can sneak an extra one in! ;)

Heh, too late. I already did that for both Graduation Day parts one and two and also Becoming parts one and two

I don't consider it cheating Lori. I think of it as creative listmaking

Whoops-- I saw them on your list, but didn't count the items. Didn't realize you had 27.

See, Lori-- I'm not the only che.....er, creative listmaker. ;)

I have watched Buffy since episode 1 of season 1, but I could not quote you a list of episode names to save my life. However, I did really like "Hush" as someone mentioned, and I liked the series with Adam, and I really liked Faith (is she still rotting in jail? break her out already and let her be a good guy!). Faith was probably the coolest character on the show to be tossed aside pretty conveniently, but not the only one. The broke the gypsy teacher's neck (well, Angel did) pretty nonchalantly when they were done with her.

Another episode that was really good was the one where the nerdy guy from the trio (in pre-trio days) cast a spell to make him a superstar guy that everyone loved.

Wow, if that wasn't a stream-of-consciousness rant I don't know what one is.

Posted by: dcstager

Faith was last seen in the season two opener of Angel. She was in jail talking on the telephone through the glass to Angel at the very end of the show.

I'd been telling my sister she needed to check into "Buffy" for years and she never listened. When "Hush" was rerun the first time I called her that day and told her she had to watch that episode. She did, and immediately began watching rgularly, and has since caught up on the entire series.

In a way it's the perfect episode; it has lots of things in it for the long-time fan, yet it's easy-access for those who haven't ever seen "Buffy" before.

Faith and the Mayor together were absolutely the greatest.
