Unable to get Serial PPP under xp to work

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: zolter

My Tivo modem seem to hold my phone line open at all times and I am unable to dial out to get guide info.
I am running a computer with xp and the Tivo was just ungraded to ver 3.0. I followed the directions that are out there about hooking up null modem cable. I is hooked up correctly since I can see the hyperterminal information.
When I set up the connection in xp and dial out with Tivo, I see a new connection pop up called "unauthenicated connection". Anyone have any idea why it is not using the connection I set up. I have reconfigued the cable connection about 7 times with the same results each time..

I am at a loss..
Any suggestions.
Thanks

It *is* using the connection you set up. That's what it's supposed to look like. That "unauthenticated connection" is the Tivo connecting to the computer.

Posted by: zolter

Ok, so I guess my actual problem is that is continues to say connecting on the tivo unit for about 3 minutes and then gives an error of "failed. service unavailable" The connect sent about 1800 packets and received about 475.

p.s. I dropped the speed as low at 9600 to try to connect.
I have not network set up just one computer directly connect to cable modem.

You need to set up a private IP range for the Tivo and the Windows side of the ppp connection. Your cable modem is likely only going to give an IP to your computer.

Posted by: Otto

If you're directly connected to the cable modem, then it will not work regardless of what you're doing. The computer is not a NAT device. You will need a hardware NAT like the Linksys boxes, or you will need a software NAT like WinRoute running on the computer. The connection from the Tivo to the Computer sounds like it works, but it never gets an answer because you have no NAT to translate the addressing.

We just purchased a Dlink 614 router and want to make sure it is set up correctly. (We are able to access e-mail and web pages). There is a special section for applications with multiple ports (also asking for a trigger port). Would we use this for Tivo and if so what are the ports and trigger? Are there any other hints to access the internet from Tivo properly (we are new at router setup)? If the router assigns DHCP how is the XP connection set up (do we use the same range on the PC)?

Posted by: Otto

There should be no port adjustments you need to make.

But, just make sure that the range the router assigns for DHCP doesn't overlap the range you put in the incoming connection on XP.. So, for example, the router can assign say, 2-252, and then you'd put 253 and 254 in the incoming connection. The Tivo, when it dialed in, would get 254.

Or, sometimes, you can tell the XP incoming connection to use DHCP to give the "caller" an address. This sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Sorta depends on your network card and it's drivers. If it does work, though, when the Tivo "dials in" to the XP machine, it will give the Tivo an address that it gets from the router.

This is sorta in reference to another XP PPP thread, but what happens once the Tivo "dials" to the XP box? Does XP setup the connection before forwarding the DHCP request to the router/dhcp server? Is there some control over the routing of the incoming connection to a specific network interface? thanks.

Otto,
Everything is working and I still had 2 1/2 days to spare before all program data was gone. It must have been the overlapping ranges in DHCP while using the router. Well I guess I can unplug the soldering iron to repair the modem with the repair parts I received today. I did not have a magnifing glass strong enough. Thanks again. Now I hope I can catch up on my sleep. Thanks.

Somebody please help!

So we are having the same problem as Zolter post his purchase of the router. We have our connection all set up via null modem. The incoming connection. All running on com2. Tested it in hyperterminal and have communication.

Test call fails each time. Tried bumping down to 9600.. tried setting to DMZ on the linksys... trying specifying non-overlapping ip address on the incoming connection.. tried VPN...

Basically we've tried everything we can think of and we are hitting our heads against the wall at this point..

We'd appreciate any suggestions anyone can offer at this point. Please help us! We have no landline, and thus a useless TiVo! :(

Here is the modem log... if it means anything to anyone...

I spent about 5 hours yesterday trying to get my TiVo (3.0) to connect via the serial line. I had my friend helping me who understands this stuff a bit more than I do.

I have a LAN working in my house with all systems running Windows XP. Whenever anything tries to access the net one system will dial the network connection (Yes, dial-up, DSL or cable modem not available).

I connect the TiVo via the null modem to one system. It connects fine to that system and the dial-up to the network starts and connects. After several minutes it fails to connect with "Service Unavailable".

We tried many different settings as suggested in other posts. We even set the dial-up directly on the computer with the TiVo connected.

We tried using Proxy+ on the sytems to see if that would help. No luck anywhere.

Is there ANYONE who has a setup similar to mine with this working? Can you help me? I am currently paying long distance charges for one TiVo and with the 800 number going away I will be paying them for 2 TiVo's. Not to mention I can get rid of that stinking phone line going to the entertainment center!

Thanks in advance,

Jim

I had these problems too, when I was attempting PPP over Serial.

If I did a TraceRoute to TiVo's servers, I found the network path was dreadful.

For me, the solution was to mount TiVo's drive using Dylan's Boot Disk, and edit ppp-options to reset TiVo's MTU to 576.

Do a search for posts by me in the Underground and you'll see it.

I fianlly got both the test call and daily call to connect via PPP. It turns out that Otto's tip (quoted above) made all the difference. I looked at my RT311 (cable router) setup, and it is configured to assign IP addresses in the range of 192.168.0.1 - .32. So, I changed the XP Network Connection properties to assign the incoming connection an IP between .34 & .36 / not allow caller to specify own address. That was all it took! Ironically, the day before I called Tivo and "opted out" since I was tired of waiting for the logs to upload on my modem that hold the line.
