I'm moving this list from its place in the "TiVo, the girl, and the mysterious 3.0 reboot" thread to its own thread. Moderators, if you think this should be sticky for a week or two, feel free; if not, that's fine too. Everyone, if you know something that isn't on this list but should be (and that doesn't require backdoor mode to be activated), post it (and whether it was new in 2.5 or in 3.0) and I'll update the list accordingly.

New Features And Changes In TiVo v3.0 Software
An unofficial list compiled from info provided by many helpful people

New features for everyone


  1. (Un)support for downloading guide data over a broadband connection instead of the phone line -- requires Series 2 USB plus USB Ethernet card, or Series 1 plus TiVoNet or TurboNet or equivalent. PPP over serial is also (un)supported.
  2. The ability to turn off the 28 day rule for each SP/WL.
  3. A darker color for the Live TiVoGuide so it is easier to read. Fonts also look crisper and perhaps narrower.
  4. Better suggestions using collaborative suggestion engine.
  5. Download guide information via Teleworld on Discovery to shorten daily calls.
  6. 30 second skip doesn't disable skip-to-tick (does 30-second when playing, skip-to-tick when fast-forwarding).
  7. Fix for certain RCA DirecTV receivers using serial connection.
  8. Minor UI improvements: show titles on confirmation screens, removal of unnecessary confirmation screens, etc.
  9. Use channels 0 and 1 to view (and do trick play on, but not record) alternative inputs.
  10. In trick play, length of skipback/skipforward changed slightly.
  11. Changed timing when changing channels should avoid the brief flicker of the old channel some systems had.
  12. A change to how upgrades are handled, so future upgrades won't reboot you without warning.
  13. A new pseudo-backdoor that lets you sort Now Playing by expiration date or alphabetical by title.
  14. On Sony TiVos, "Save To VCR" keeps the info screen up longer, to accommodate newer Sony VCRs analyzing tape quality.


New features only for Series 2 folks (Series 1 folks have had these for a long time, since 2.5):


  1. Skip-to-tick functionality.
  2. Wishlist improvements: wildcarding (airp* gets both airplane and airport), actor wishlists searching last-name-first and first-name-first.
  3. The ability to turn on 30 second skip (Select Play Select 3 0 Select).
  4. Fixed access to 4-digit channels on DISH Network.
  5. Extended program information (Display or Enter on program information).
  6. Enhanced/annoying (depends on your perspective) showcase content.
  7. Improvements to parental controls (the ability to turn off auto-lock, more rating limit options).
  8. Improved picture quality for some Series 2 systems that had problems with PQ.
  9. Wishlists alphabetized.
  10. Press CLEAR in Now Playing to delete programs.
  11. FF and REW now allowed during Save To VCR.


Note: this list does not include new features that only work when you have backdoor mode activated. (Check the Underground Forum where I imagine someone's maintaining a list like this one.) However, some of them are officially unsupported secret features that don't require backdoor mode. Don't ask TiVo Inc. to help with those!

Actually #12 on the first list does require backdoors to be enabled. :)
