Has anyone actually gotten PPP over serial to work in Win2000?

I have really tried to make this work. Followed Otto's directions, cable is fine as I can see the Tivo transmitting at 115k, 19k and 9600. By reading the log file for the modem, the windows machine sees the ring and connects then disconnects for some reason. Here is that section of the log file:

Anyone have any ideas?
Computer is on a local lan and tied to a D-link router to share the cable modem connection.

Looks like you didn't delete the .pnf file and reboot after you edited the .inf file. Try doing that again.
FYI, I'm using PPP to 2K with no problems.

Thanks for the suggestion. I thought I did that but sure won't hurt to try again. Also glad to know it works for someone. If it works once, it'll work again. I'll post back this evening and let you know.

Ok, I deleted the mdmhayes.pnf file, deleted the incomming connections and deleted the modem. Reboot. Recreate the modem and incomming connections. check and mdmhayes.pnf file is back with todays date. Connection still does not work. Can see tivo on hyperterminal but no connect. Here is the 2700 section of my mdmhayes.inf file:

I am at wits end with this. Is there anything different in Win2000 from the directions for XP given by Otto? Any other ideas? I really wanted to get this working to stop using the 800 number and costing Tivo money as I have a perfectly good internet connection it should be able to use.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Surely someone has an idea as to why my PPP over serial will not work.
Thanks,
James
Posted by: uTivo
I have the exact problem with XP Pro. I seem to think it's a routing problem between the PPP adapter and my broadband connection. I just cannot locate any setting that allows me to configure the route..
Posted by: Mars
gleffler,
Since your ppp setup is working with 2K, could you possibly post a screen shot of your control panel/administrative tools/services so we can compare settings? Mine is working with win 2k, but only every other try for some reason.
Posted by: Otto
"Hardware hangup by lowering DTR." probably means that you have the flow control set to "hardware". That won't work. Check the settings on your incoming connections or the modem or so on.
I think you missed this line in my little how-to:
"Also, click on the General Tab, select the "communications cable.." and hit properties. Then set the Flow Control to "None". (Sorry, no screenshot of this yet)"
Posted by: gleffler
Um, sure, I guess. Although I didn't do anything to services to get it working.

Thanks for the replies folks. Unfortunatly, still no go.
Otto, just to be sure we are talking about the same setting and I have not missed it somewhere else. Open Network and Dialup Connections, right click 'Incomming Connections' and select properties. Select 'communications cable between...' and click the properties button. ON the 'General' tab is a setting for flow control and it is set to 'none'
Is there someting related to remote access service that needs to be installed for this to work? This installation of Win2000 has never had a dialup internet conneciton or a modem so remote access service has never been configured. Just a thought.

Hey gang.
I am also using PPP over Serial with Win2k.
I had problems with assigning TiVo an IP address or routing properly.
I added a Linux-based Firewall/IPMasq router and DHCP server between my cable modem and the Win2k box and that fixed that problem. (Not a solution for everyone.. but I like it!)
jcthorne:
You shouldn't need anything relating to RAS with Win2k, as far as I know, as TCP/IP and the Communication cable setup should have included all necessary items.
Are you able to get the TiVo to talk to the Win2k box successfully at all?
(I recommend going to Settings -> Network Connections -> Incoming Connections -> Properties and make sure that "Display system tray icon when connected" is checked. helps to let you see if the problem is between TiVo and Win2k or Win2k and the Internet.)
My problems mainly focused around having Test Calls work, but all Daily Calls fail.
I had to open up TiVo, mount the disk, and change the mtu of two ppp-options files to 576.
That made the packets small enough to reach TiVo's mothership.
Hope that helps.

OH!
I just looked over your logs again. Set your serial port settings to 115200, 8, None, 1, None.
(Do this from: Right-Click my computer > properties > Hardware > Device Manager > Expand Ports (COM & LPT) > Right-click port in use > Properties > Port Settings)
/gleffler
Posted by: jcthorne
Well, on the chance that the port speed was the problem I set it back to 115200 and changed tivos prefix back to ,#211. Still same sequence. I get data from the port fine and the log file shows the same except for the higher port speed. Still disconneting soon after sending the 'CLIETSERVER' response.
I really have no other ideas here. The computer connects to the internet using dhcp fine, just will not establish the connection with tivo.
One frustrated tivo owner......

gleffler,
Thanks for posting that screen shot. I compared with my services setup and changed several settings to match yours, re-booted, but no improvement, still takes two tries to connect. And now with the new settings, I've lost my "incoming connection" and everything else in "dial up networking". Soooo.....
Posted by: nrune
I am having exactly the same issues. I think the problem is with MS ICS. This program is not a true DHCP or NAT would be my guess.
From everything that I have read, you need to have some kind of real proxy running. Wingate, Sygate, ect... I have winproxy 3.0, but that did not work at all. Not compatable with XP would be my guess. I dl'd Sygate, will install today and let you know if that fixes the problem.
Posted by: Mars
nrune,
Seems that if MS ICS is the problem, nobody would get it to work, but some people are! Well let us know how the test goes.
Posted by: nrune
Nothing, Absoultly misrable results. I tried sygate, winproxy, and others all failed. So some have gotten PPP to work with XP ICS?
How is this done? Any special settings?
Posted by: nrune
Thanks to everyone for the help.
Still no go. Once the tivo connects to the computer it seems to time out waiting for something to happen. Once connected to the desktop, I can ping the tivo.
Here's the modem log it looks a lot like jcthorne's.

Well mine is working with windows 2000, but only if I try to connect two times per session. I have to first try a "test" call which will fail. Then I retry this time making a daily call and it gets thru successfully. I need to get this working properly as my TiVo modem got hit by lightning. I'd rather not spend the $70 for turbo net and $120 for the DHCP router needed to make it work. Not to mention that it may be just as hard to get it to work as this ppp connection. Using the serial cable that came with my TiVo, all I had to buy was a couple of adapters at radio shack.

I doubble checked flow control and it is set to off.
Any ideas before I plunk down the cash for a turbonet?
Not to dwell on this, but did you verify that flow control was NONE on the modem properties or the COM port properties? I found that I was disabling flow control via the HW Device Manager, but the modem properties were trumping the Device Manager when the modem opened the port. FWIW, even after changing the modem to use no flow ctrl, it still doesn't work :(

jcthorne,
Your log still show your serial at 9600, should be 115,200. I do not have a router but have a cable modem and my Tivo is connected to Com1.
I had great pain to set it up. It seems that when I got a step done the next one was another challenge! I am pretty green with Linux and network, spent more than 10hrs to understand and implement the changes.
I am sorry in advance if I am going to repeat some info that has been said already. Here what I did to get it going:
First I follow the instruction from this thread to set the Tivo side:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...&threadid=66247
Make sure it is follow to the letter! I made 1 typo error that I found when I browsed the Tivo log(After many hours).
It also said to follow Otto's procedure. I did. I was now seeing the connection between the TIVO and Win2k but the connection failed(in Tivo's Dial Prefix I have ,#401). The only change I made was in the "incoming TCP/IP properties" I selected specific addresses (192.168.1.83 and 192.168.1.85). My "allow callers to access my LAN" is selected and the "allow calling computer to specify their own IP" is unchecked.
I fooled around many hours(saw this thread and that I was not the only one with the problem) read somewhere somebody suggesting to use a program like Wingate then I decided to try that. Wingate has a "Network setup Wizard" utility.
http://www.deerfield.com/download/wingate/
I used that. Still did not work. Tivo was being stop by Wingate firewall! I disabled the Firewall then Bingo! test call and daily calls were successful.
I am now operating without wingate and everything still works. I think that the Wingate wizard did something somewhere in Win2k configuration(I updated from Win98, not a fresh install).
This is pretty much that. Hope this help. My only concern is I may have open the door to my PC. Anybody has a suggestion for a good Firewall/Router ?!

Ok, Under the heading of 'Try anything and you may learn something'
I changed the network settings for 'Incomming Connections' from DHCP to Assign IP address. I use a D-Link 701 cable modem router and it assigns IP address starting at 192.168.0.1 and is allowed 32 address in the pool.
The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. I set the incomming connections IP range to 192.168.0.127 and 128, I then tried 63 and 64 and then tried the last two addresses in the router range 31 and 32. All achieved the same results. I achieved a connection and about 500 to 1500 bytes were sent each way for each range tried and then the connection terminated and TIVO reports 'Service Unavailable'
OK, this at least tells me it is a network problem and not a serial connection one. Any ideas among the network experts out there?
Oh yeah, just so there is no confusion, I have not edited any files on the TIVO, have set the port speeds back to 115200 and the prefix string back to ,#211
Thanks folks! I'll get this working yet!

OK, typing 101. Enter the IP address range correctly into incomming connections (192.168.0.127 and 128. Not 198.168.0.127.....) and it connected first try. Made 4 test calls and then a daily and all worked perfect and recorded no communications errors in the connection window.
Whew! I knew it was just a matter of some small setting.
Now, just for the record:
For PPP over serial using Win2000 and a D-Link 701 router, do not use DHCP, set a pair of addresses above the pool for the router and within the same subnet mask. And yes 115,200 bps port speed works fine connecting about 25 feet across my HT room.
Thanks again!
