How big is uncompressed backup image?

Hi,

For a special reason, I need to try an uncompressed backup image. I have PTV-100, which has original drive 13.6 Gb, and was added a 80 Gb B drive. Can someone tell me what's the file size of uncompressed backup image? I tried to put backup image on the 13.6 Gb drive for testing, but the error message told me the file is too big for this drive, why?

Xiaoyu,

When you do a backup, MFStools 2 says "Original size" "Upgraded to" "Backup size".. if the backup size is the same as the upgraded to size then it will not then fit on the original disk a.

The size of the uncompressed backup is also displayed by MFStools 2. Mine was just over 1gb in size.

My C drive is only 5 Gb. The uncompressed backup file could fit in it , but why couldn't fit in to 13.6Gb original A drive?

Your backup file is compressed. MFSTools automatically compresses the file a bit. Not only that, but it more or less takes in the "important parts" of the filesystem. Thus it takes the background videos, etc, and ignores the rest of the stuff. However, the TiVo expects a partition of a certain size, so when you restore the image, it places the videos in the right spots, and automatically fills in the stuff it skipped before (because it's easy to regenerate).

You are trying to restore a backup or save the backup on the 13.6 GB drive.

Under MFSTools 1.x (using -s) I think the backup w/o any compression was around 1100MB (aka 1.1GB). If you want to back up all your programms the uncompressed backup will be around 90GB?

There is also a 2GB file size limit on some file systems.
