SCI FI will develop a two-hour movie based on the TV series Quantum Leap, which will also serve as a back-door pilot for a possible series. Series creator Don P. Bellisario will executive produce.

I think we can forget about Scott Bakula coming back for this one.

Posted by: ClutchBrake

No Scott Bakula = No way I'd be interested.

He did Major League 3: Back to the Minors, why couldn't he do a Quantum Leap movie? :D

Posted by: Philosofy

Will it star Kyle Chandler, from Early Edition? That series ended in kind of a Quantum Leap beginning.

Posted by: Hunter Green

Maybe the movie will have Scott and Dean in it, but it'll set up a transition to a new team, so it makes sense in canon.

It'd be nice to see Scott again, but that doesn't mean there isn't another talented hungry actor out there. (Plus, it might be interesting to have a female in the lead; lots of new interesting situations to try out that way.)

I think Bakula might have contract obligations to Enterprise.

Posted by: Bryanmc

I loved Bakula in QL, but after getting just about sick of him in Enterprise, I've got no problem with another person taking over.

My hope is that they would use a new character and not have someone else playing Beckett.

Of course, it would be great to see Bakula guest star in an episode down the road that would provide better closure to his travels.

It'd be cool to have Dean back, but again, I don't mind a new companion.

Just no more jumping into Elvis! :D

Bellisario does not have a good history of "continuations" from his series. Case in point, "Galactica 1980" and the revamped "Airwolf."

I hope they bring Bakula and Stockwell back for the film, and that the proposed series doesn't make. I still have nightmares of the series that back-door pilot "Mary and Rhoda" might have spawned :)

Pan relieved him of those obligations. :D

In all fairness to Bellisario, he's not listed on the production credits of Airwolf II nor Galactica 1980

The only thing that occurs to me as a potential of possibly working without bringing back Bakula and Stockwell, would be to focus on the life of the 'evil leaper'... Of course, it'd be an interesting show that way.. "Striving to put wrong what once went right. And hoping each time, that her next leap... Would be the leap into someone who could launch a nuclear weapon"

Sad that we won't get to see Gooshie again. :(

****Spoilers****

Sam freed her of that at the end of the Evil Leaper story arc. She leaped blue at the end after her observer (Al's counterpart) died.

So she's been leaping on her own, presumably doing good, for the past X number of years. They were going to have another episode about her in 6th season, as well as hopefully trying to deal with the loose ends from the Sammy Jo story arc. Although there are some really weak episodes in the last season, I highly recommend catching the Evil Leaper story arc as well as the Sammy Jo story arc. Sam having a counterpart out there leaping around, plus having a daughter in 1995 possibly able to help him were both just awesome ideas that could have really kept the series interesting for another season or two.

That's the problem, they set up all this stuff including the Season Finale (that was NOT planned to be the Series Finale).

I really think these shows need to start contractually obligating networks to require either prior notice to cancel or financial assurance to complete a finale episode. If Quantum Leap had been given 2 hours, they could have explained things.

The uncut 55 minute final episode is floating around on eBay. I really need to get a hold of it to make some sense of it, as the butchered 46 minute version is impossible to follow.

Little known fact: Bellisario never intended for them to have the "Dr. Beckett never returned home." title card. It was inserted at the last minute.

They could do episodes with Sammy Jo, or someone following Sam's work (he sure left enough clues behind in various episodes, telling people who he was and where he came from!). Then there's the question of if/when/how Sam would have gotten ahold of Al and explained to him how he kept he and Beth together but he'd still appreciate it if Al helped him with leaping. :)

Otherwise we have Roddy McDowell's character "St. John" as his observer.

** END SPOILERS **

I too miss Dennis Wolfberg and was glad he got more airtime in the 5th season, particularly in the Killin Time episode.

I hope the new series strikes the right balance between science and drama but I've just seen so many series screwed up this way. I think they'll go nuts on the sci-fi aspects and break all the QL rules we know so far. Then again QL broke its own rules so many times and the last episode broke a ton more.

There are a bunch of holes people could exploit. But the thing with the evil leaper is that she has either leaped home, or is leaping around alone (she had no observer after breaking away from her previous one).

I don't know what QL would be like without Sam and Al. It'll probably feel cheesey. I hope not.

At least they got the original creator back. That's a step in the right direction.

I watched the show off and on and didn't catch a lot of the episodes you guys have been mentioning. I'd like to create a Wishlist to catch good episodes. Anybody have can't miss titles?

Posted by: doom1701

What if you had a leaper leap into a leaper? Then the leaper in the leaper leaped?

Actually, I rarely watched the show. Just had to chat about something, though.

tivolovr,

Evil Leaper trilogy:
"Deliver Us From Evil"
"Return of the Evil Leaper" (originally a 2 hour with the next one)
"Revenge of the Evil Leaper"

Sammy Jo trilogy:
"Daughter of Sin"
"For your Love"
"The Last Door"

"Mirror Image" - the perplexing last episode

"Killin Time" - great 5th season episode

"A Leap for Lisa" -
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
a glimpse at a world without Al

"Shock Theater" - "The Leap Back" 3rd season cliffhanger ending + 4th season premiere -- awesome

You gotta have "M.I.A.", "The Leap Home", and "Vietnam".

Could you guys explain Sammy Jo character, please?

I watched this show religiously , but between day/time changes, I remember the evil leaper stories (which I enjoyed but don't remember the conclusion) but surely not Sammy Jo episodes.

Could you guys explain this again?

Thanks again. Lovin' these old-school TV stories.

So what does the unedited episode have that the aired episode doesn't have?

The picture leaps in differently mostly. Check it out online at:

Dr. Sam Beckett's daughter who is now in her 30's and is working at Project Quantum Leap due to a 3 episode story arc involving her mother.

Agent86, thanks for that website!!!

Re-watch the trilogy where Sam leaps into a Sheriff in a small town investigating a murder. Through out the triology, he's trying to protect a young little girl (Abigail ??) from a crazed mother who wants the girl killed. I think the first episode is called "One little heart." In the second episode, he leaps into the sheriff's deputy and has sex with Abigail. Their child is Sammy Jo. In the last episode, he's a lawyer (the lawyer that Sam leaped into was originally one the deputies (??) from Episode 1 of the trilogy) defending Abigail during a trial for murder. I don't remember the details but Sammy Jo helps in some way.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
It's revealed that the Other Crazed Mother in Hospital held onto the locket that was broken and torn during a confrontation. And that the girl of the first Crazed Mother accidentally fell and died.

I think at the end of the trilogy, Sam leaps into the episode called "Evil Leaper". I don't think he leaps into the original Jimmy (the mentally retarded dockworker). He leaps into an altered timeline created by the Evil Leaper who tries to wreck the marriage of Jimmy's brother.

Stallions Gate Link was great, I enjoyed it much.

I truly hope if a QL movie is done, Bakula at the very least has a cameo to "pass the torch" even if he isn't the main star. It's just a shame there was never a final episode to wrap things up, or a wrap-up 2-hour movie. That would'a been really great!

Any idea why this hasn't been done for sweeps month, at least, even now? Did TV execs totally hate QL or misunderstand it?

Matt

When it was airing, QL was my favorite television show. The idea of having a 2-hour movie and possible series is pretty exciting!

I'm also one of those people that really hated the "Dr. Sam Beckett never returned" at the end. I'm gonna look around for the uncut version of the final show. That would be great!

---edit---
I have my Tivo make sure that there's always a QL episode recorded. :) Whenever I'm in the mood, there's always one I can watch.

Or maybe she has an observer at PQL. Al has kept information from Sam before; perhaps the true fate of Alia wasn't shown to Sam (or us). Maybe Al is her observer now too, or maybe someone else at the project whose mesons and neurons are close enough in sync with her. Maybe Dr. Beeks?

I wonder if the new Quantum Leap series will use the a) traditional leaping done in the series -- into existing characters in history --- or b) the "next generation" of leaping seen in the series finale -- leaping into "ghosts" (people who exist temporarily in time so then they can finish their mission, then leap out)

Posted by: LoadStar

Hard to say without knowing exactly what this new Quantum Leap movie/series will be. Will it be a "re-envisioning of the series" - where basically, they remake the series as if the original never happened? Will it be a "spin-off" type movie/series, focusing on, say, Alia (the "evil" leaper)? Will it be a "sequel," actually focusing on Sam Beckett and what happens after "Mirror Image"? And which of these would be preferable?

I'd personally have to say I'd be scared to imagine the first suggestion. Thankfully, I'd guess it's probably the more remote of the possibilities as well. A movie/series focusing on Alia would be kinda cool - if they could get the actress who played her back for it. It also would allow for cameo appearances by Sam and Al. A sequel movie would be cool - but since I know that Scott Bakula would not be available for a sequel series, this is probably out too.

I guess we'll have to hold our breath and hope it's not as dreadful as other TV retreads, like "Galactica 1980" for example.

I think in the movie Bakula should find out that he has a son and Bakula's character dies in the end. The son takes over for him.

Posted by: Agent86

I'll one up that.

Sam becomes sick while leaping. Nothing uncurable, but enough that he has to get some serious bed rest and can't perform his leaper's duties. Since his life is in jeopardy, god/fate/time leaps him home. While Sam is recouperating, his daughter decides - against his wishes - to leap and take his place. Since her brain is much like Sam's, Al can continue to be her observer. Another evil leaper could be created, and perhaps she can even run into Alia every now and then. As the series progresses, Sam can guest star occasionally as Gooshie used to do.

At the end of the series - if they want to keep the "Sam never returned home" thing true - she can become mortally wounded and then Sam leaps into her to take her place one again sacrificing himself for the betterment of the rest of mankind (like he did with Al once before).

I wish they would release a book of short stories of the actual scripts they'd written for Season 6 of Quantum Leap. At least then we'd have some canonical answers for how the show intended to play out.

Posted by: LoadStar

Have they announced when the TV movie/"back door pilot" for QL will air? Or is it still just one of those undetermined projects?

In either case, someone please post an update when the airdate gets closer, please. No matter how bad it may or may not be, I plan to watch.
