"The Wire" -- when will it end?

Does anyone know how many eps are in this new HBO series? I really like it (I was a big Homicide fan), but I'm curious how far into it we are. If this is like a typical HBO series, I'm assuming 13 eps total, so we're at the halfway point. Any evidence to support/refute?

Posted by: harvscar

Everything I've read has mentioned 13 episodes.

Posted by: grecorj

harvscar: thanks for your response.

Posted by: zaknafein

The first couple eps kind of bored me. I've got the rest of them sitting there, just haven't gotten motivated to watch them. I assume it has improved?

Posted by: harvscar

I'm not sure that it's improved as much as you become more engrossed the more time you hang on. I think it's a good show with a good ensemble, not as great as others I've seen but better than most. Some of the standard cop show cliches they're using are a little annoying, but I enjoy it overall. IMO, if the first eps didn't grab you then I don't think you'll be any more drawn to the subsequent ones.

I think it's great. Right now in the dog days of summer it's the only show I look forward to each week.

I think that all shows are tough at the start when you do not know the characters. This got better each week as you get to know the characters.

I also find that if you watch a show by starting with the first five episodes back to back it really helps because you get to know every one quicker. I did this with Band Of Brothers and some others.

The pace is a little slower than say "The Shield" but it is certainly developing interesting characters.

Posted by: grecorj

I don't mind the pace, but it is a little on the slow side. The plot(s) seem(s) to be building with each week, and I'm looking forward to how they get resolved. McNulty is cool, so's his partner. They're funny together... Stringer Bell is cool, too.

Posted by: tonyoci

McNulty is a brit funnilly enought.

I like the older guy who reminds me of a younger Morgan Freeman, quiet and cool.

I have a hard time with the Lieutenant and the Major, they are kind of one dimensional.

So far it is not bad, I like it more than Street Time. I did enjoy when they were checking the kitchen out.

The Wire is still on? Watch The Shield instead.

Posted by: grecorj

While I enjoyed some eps of The Sheild, what I like about The Wire is the nuances. While Sheild was in your face just to be in your face, Wire is kind of jarring in a realistic way.

Plus, Sheild is still just episodic television; Wire's format is more epic-y.

Hard to compare the two, IMO.

Plus, Sheild's season has been over for a while; Wire is still in FR.

apologies for bumping an old thread, but i am liking this show more and more every week, as noted above.

it's more like a mini-series or 13 hour movie than an episodic like the shield, which, even though it had a full season story, still had little plots that started and ended in each ep.

with the wire, i can't think of anything that was a one episode storyline. you can definitely feel the little threads first introduced in week one pulling together.

bottom line: i'm glad i stuck it out through the slow beginning.

I think the show is great, right now it is the one show I look forward to every week. It is a little slow but has depth so that is OK with me. The other point is that I have no idea how it is going to work out and that is the sign of good writing (or people who have no idea where something is going).

I have an interest in almost all the characters which is amazing. The only one's I think are a bit stupid are the judge and McNulty's Major. I also do not like the Lieutenant but that's because I do not like the actor.

this show rocks. Omar rules, he is one bad mo-fo :)

Posted by: grecorj

Does anyone know what the actor's name is who plays Omar? I did a quick look at IMDB and HBO.com but found nothing. He has one wicked scar on his face, eh?

And the dude that plays the "owner/bartender" at the "gentlemen's club" that Avon uses as a front, he looks **so** familiar. Was he on Homicide at some point?

Posted by: tonyoci

I thought Omar was pretty familiar. Maybe a rapper or something.

I don't remember his name but I found it on the HBO.Com The Wire newsgroup. I also saw the name of "Orlando" also.

The actor who plays Omar is great, IMO, but I don't know his name, either. I'll watch the credits more closely.

The bartender from the club is played by Clayton LeBouef who played Capt. (later Colonel) George Barnfather on Homicide. He was a recurring character throughout the entire series run. His character was very political, and a major thorn in G's side. I think he also demoted Capt Howard all the way back down to detective at one point.

Damn, I miss Homicide.....while I still watch SVU, I can't believe it gets better ratings in that timeslot.

Mac

P.S. The Wire is definitely getting better week after week.

Posted by: woyton

Michael K. Williams is the guy who plays Omar.

This show is great; I'm glad I stuck with it.

Posted by: justapixel

I watched four episodes and cancelled my season pass. It had four hours to gain my interest and it refused.

Glad others are enjoying it though. It has some good actors, but there didn't appear to be any plot or anything interesting happening.

Posted by: grecorj

According to the schedule @ HBO.com, Episode 9 is this Sunday; Episode 12 is scheduled for 9/1. If there are indeed 13 episodes in the run, I wonder if they will show the finale on 9/15 and not 9/8, as Sopranos returns on 9/15 and I believe S&TC will have its finale around that time. Would make a powerful HBO Sunday lineup for that night!

This show just gets better week by week. If the pace feels a little slow, I encourage you to stick with it. My wife & I watched about 5 episodes in a 2 day span to catch up earlier this summer and have been hooked ever since.

Posted by: tonyoci

I think most if these shows benefit if you can watch 4-5 episodes in a row to get started. That really helped me with Band of Brothers because it is much easier to keep track of everyone and their personalities

WHAT?? Obviously we aren't watching the same show. There are many subplots and great character development, I wish every show was this in-depth and "interesting"...

To each their own, I suppose.

After the first two episodes - I too was about to drop my SP. However, as noted, this show just continues to get better and better every week. Omar is by far the best character on the show - although McNulty's partner 'Bunk' is also brilliant. The clothes burning scene was excellent. The chemistry of those two characters alone make the show.

I was only lukewarm about it at first also - then I got behind and watched 3-4 episodes fairly close together. That got me into it. I love it now.

Posted by: ehopper

With the depth of Avon and particularly, Stringer and Omar, this is becoming "The Sopranos in the Ghetto".

They can't arrest/kill off Avon, Stringer or Omar. We need them for season 2.

Posted by: pjenkins

I agree. Although is there a season 2 planned? Or is season 1 going to wrap up this storyline? I haven't heard which way they are doing it...

Posted by: tonyoci

I cannot explain it but this show just seems to get better and better each week. I think the story is very very believable and the multi layered complex characters, (not all good and not all bad) just make it very unpredicatable. At this point I could not say how it is going to turn out (will they catch the bad guy or not) or who is going to live or die. I think there might be a suprise or two waiting for us.

T

Posted by: tonyoci

By the way, now that they added the guy from the other side of town perhaps he will be the focus of the next season.

T

Posted by: grecorj

Well the end of the most recent episode was **awesome**.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
When Omar beeps Avon and Avon goes out to use the payphone, and here comes Omar, but wait, Stringer is back and then...

I mean, wow!

Posted by: pjenkins

grecorj, I agree, the ending was tense. That sets up so much more for the coming weeks, with Barksdale going even deeper under the radar and further removing himself from day-to-day things, as well as a potential change up to the codes, and ways of operations that the crew are running, forcing McNulty and company to expand their taps, and change their tactics as well.

I loved the leuitenant's reaction when McNulty said another tap, another 30 days! His life is hell :)

Posted by: tonyoci

The Lieutenant (?) is the one person character I do not understand. He seems inconsistent and not happy whatever is going on ?

The other, more cultural, thing is how Barksdale has so much power. I would have thought someone would have knocked him off by now since he is the top dog. Perhaps that will come later.

T

PS. It was WeeBay (?) who went out for the food not Stringer

Posted by: dmaneyapanda

The Lt. is very hot and cold. But remember, someone somewhere has something on him. Also remember McNulty's Fed friend told him that the Lt. was dirty. Have we figured out how that will play into things yet?

Posted by: tonyoci

I think I understand the character and the things you mention may come into it, I guess I do not think the actor plays the role very well. He is probably a B+ but he stands out in an A+ ensemble.
