I want to give props to Tim McNerney and his work on the Tivo units. I sent him my unit with the infamous "modem not responding" situation. Within a week, he had the modem repaired, the memory upgraded, and the unit back to me. This INCLUDES shipping time for USPS priority mail from TX to OH. Very good with e-mail, very good with the unit, treated it great. I was a little hesistant as to where to send my unit for repair, but everyone suggested him.
It even worked out as a better deal for me. My total was $123 shipped. To Philips, I'd have paid $139, for a refurbished unit, with a 2 week warranty. This way, I kept my own original unit (esp good for those with lifetime subscriptions) so I don't have to do anything to reactivate service, and I know the unit works fine.
Please do not be afraid to go through him. Its well worth it!
