That is OLD news. Chase never planned on it going this long.
Any takers on how long it will be before The Sopranos is coming soon to a theater near you?

I for one think its already gone on too long. I'm a firm believer of the "live fast, die young and leave a beautiful corpse" theory when it comes to TV shows. The plot lines are becoming way to strained. It's still a good show, but not as good as it was in the first 2 seasons. Chase could (have) tie(d) up the Sopranos plot in a nice end package and use those creative juices for a new project. Unfortunately, the public and the network execs become enamored with a particular character/plot and insist on bludgeoning it to a slow, painful and ugly death.

Since I just got HBO this year and just got into the Sopranos I find this as very bad news. It's an excellent show. Where did the info come that this is the final season? Or is it the season after this one?

There's still two more seasons coming. This one that starts in Sept. and then next years. Plus, in an article I read, HBO could still produce the show after Chase leaves. They have the rights to the show. However, most of the actors believe that they would not want to continue after Chase is gone. But, as we all know, money talks... so it's possible HBO could fork out some bucks to keep it going for a six or seventh season. That said, I think five seasons will be just right.

I generally agree that most shows go on too long, but the Sopranos seasons are only 13 episodes each. Five seasons is only 65 episodes, that's less than three full seasons of most network shows. I didn't start watching the show until season three, then I went back and watched season 1 on DVD and then watched season 2 when they re-ran it in the fall. I thought they were all great, didn't notice anything worse about season 3 as some have said.
Seems to me the problem with most shows is once a show gets established as being great, the writers and other key people that made it so great end up leaving for presumably more money on another show.

Another problem with shows running too long is this: the "marginal" characters start to get the focus. Generally the actors playing the roles insist on more "exposure" when they negotiate their contracts. Example: M*A*S*H really started to go downhill when characters like Klinger and Hot Lips got to direct shows that featured their characters showing "new depth" I think we started to see some of that with the exploration of Meadow's character last season. Sorry, but her "college experience" was boring...
But even if it has gone somewhat downhill, there are still moments like the "lost in the snow" episode that make it all worthwhile. A tired Sopranos is still better than anything the other networks have to offer.

The reason The Sopranos will go 5 years is that's the minimum for syndication.
Apparently every Sopranos episode has a sanitized voice track with all the 4 letter words changed so it will play on free tv.
My mom is hearing impaired and my family watched last season's opener with the closed captions turned on...they were very surprised because all the swearing was spelled out!

Actually, the syndication "rule" is 100 episodes, which is normally reached during the fifth year. The Sopranos is nowhere near that after five.
But shorter-lived shows do have reruns these days, on "lesser" outlets (like Sci-Fi)...

Sounds like a definite possibility

The Sopranos: The Movie?
Although Sopranos creator-producer David Chase has vowed to leave the series after next season and the actors have indicated that they will not re-sign without him, the show could return as a theatrical movie, top HBO executives and program producers indicated on Tuesday at a Pasadena news conference. Chase himself appeared to endorse the plan. The New York Times quoted him as saying: "That could possibly work. ... I would be very interested in that. My problem creatively is the kids: How old will they be, and all that. ... And also, if you want to do flashbacks, you don't have Livia. It's tough." Soprano matriarch Livia Soprano was played by Nancy Marchand, who died at age 71 on June 18, 2000.

They'd have to some editing with the video as well. But I think they would need to do that anyway if they are going to stick in comercials. I think the show would definetly loose something if it were sanitized.

I liked Season 1 and 2 a lot, but season 3 wasn't so great. Now we will probably have a theme in Season 4 of Pauly Walnuts under more and more stress, continuing what started in the latter part of season 3. And, quite frankly, that will be old news.
