New 3.0 Tivonet/Turbonet installer - with repair!
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: jafa
Hi all,
I have just released the new version of the turbonet installer.
Key new features -
* Can be run any number of times to change configuration.
* Can repair any damage cause by old installer with v3.
* Allows v3 to use a static IP address.
* Enables telnet and ftp on v3.
* Has a self test mode.
http://www.silicondust.com/terms_of_use.html
Instructions (driver only version):
1) Extract files to a DOS formatted floppy disk
2) Install tivo hard-drive into PC. Must *not* be in the primary master position.
3) Boot PC off tivo boot CD.
4) Insert floppy disk and mount:
mkdir /mnt/fd0
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0
cd /mnt/fd0
5) Make file executable (only required the first time)
chmod +x nic_install
6) Run nic_install:
./nic_install turbonet

Hi Jafa,
I'm not a Linux user, so I'm just following your instructions...
I get an error at step 5: "no such file or directory"
I did a "cd /mnt/fd0", and then did step 5 which then failed, since the file name was truncated to turbon~1.
So, I did a "chmod +x turbon~1" which seemed to work.
Then doing a "./turbon~1" gave the title & copyright, follwed by a "Error - unable to determine path"
As I say, I'm a linux newbie, so there's probably something obvious I'm doing wrong....
Cheers,
Mike

mccg: The filename shouldn't have been truncated. What boot disk were you using?
Posted by: mccg
Hi Otto,
I'm using the Boot CD from the silicondust site. (turbonet_20020509.iso)
The file has the full name when I look at it on my WinXP box....
HTH,
Mike
Posted by: Otto
Try one of the other boot CD's and see what happens. Like Kaz's CD or something. In any case, this should be a non-problem if/when jafa builds a new CD image.
Posted by: jafa
Hi Otto,
DHCP is not a problem - I will add the feature.
Nick
Posted by: mccg
Hi Otto,
Thanks for the quick replies...
It'll have to wait until later, since I'm now using TiVo for it's intended purpose :-) for a few hours, and then I'll need some sleep :-) (it's 9:20 pm here...)
But I'll try the MFSTools 2 boot CD in the morning.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi,
Try doing a ls on the disk after step 4 - is ax88796_debug.o truncated as well?
The install should work fine with truncated files except for trying to copy the debug version of the driver.
Nick
Posted by: mccg
Hi jafa,
(TiVo drives not available, so just CD & floppy connected)
Just tried it with your boot CD, and the MFSTools2 CD, and both files (turbonet_install & ax88796_debug.o) were truncated both times.
Am I doing the right thing by doing a "cd /mnt/fd0" ?
If I don't, I'm still at the root directory after step 4.
Cheers,
Mike
Posted by: Otto
Hmm.. try "mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0" instead and see if that helps.
Posted by: mccg
Otto,
That's done it - I've got long filenames now.
Hopefully these extra instruction can be included in the readme for others......
I'll re-try the install when the TiVo's not in use, ie: about 11 hours time.
Thanks team...
Cheers,
Mike
Posted by: Otto
Yeah, okay, it was using the wrong filesystem type. LFN support is in the vfat filesystem type.
Posted by: jafa
Hi all,
By popular demand - DHCP support (v3 only).
With v3 you can choose dhcp or enter a static IP address.
The download link is the same.

Hi,
I have spent all day looking thru the forum.
Its awesome, but I cant find a solution to my
TivoNet problem. I added some output from
networking commands at the bottom. It
all looks right as far as ifconfig, route.tivo,
etc.
I have a TivoNet card, and I believe the tivo
has updated itself to Version 3 (how to tell?)
I get this from the /var/log/tclient file:
It looks like version 3.
So, I can ping the tivo, telnet into the tivo, and
run traceroute to the gateway. I Can't get to external
internet addresses.
adding ",#401" to the dial prefix doesnt help, it seems
to still be trying to use the modem according to the
/var/log/tclient file.
I tried Jafa's new TurboNet instal script, even
though I dont have a turboNet card from 9th Tee
I have an older tivoNet. Jafa's install driver
printed out checking software version, then
and error saying, cant find 'mfs' ....
what should I do? the card works, I can telnet in,
but no daily calls. If line detection is off, I get
a failed cannot connnect error. with line detection
on I get an immediate 'line unavailable'..
If I have an older TivoNet, should I use TurboNet
installer?
Many Many Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Hi guys, I'm back again....
Note: I am using a UK Tivo (s/w 2.5.5), with 2x120G drives upgraded from single 40G via MFSTools2, and it has been working fine for 3 weeks.
I now have the new turbonet_install working from floppy (with turbonet install boot cd).
If I have both drives connected to the PC, when I run turbonet_install I get an Error "Multiple TiVo drives found".
If I have just the master drive connected I get an Eror "Unknown active root partition".
Using just the (older) boot cd the install does it's stuff on partition hdc4, but then fails to mount hdc7, and says I must specify a filesystem type. Not being a linux user, I don't know how to check my partitions. Do I need an hdc7? The TiVo has been working fine without one.....
Cheers,
Mike

Hi all,
I have renamed the installer to nic_install and I just released a new version.
http://www.silicondust.com/turbonet...u_download.html
New features:
* TiVoNet support (feedback needed to ensure it works).
* Airnet support (alpha, configuration only).
* DHCP or static IP support for v3.
* Can configure daily call between dialup and network.
* Extra debug mode.
Instructions for operation:
1) Extract files to a DOS formatted floppy disk
2) Install tivo hard-drive into PC. Must *not* be in the primary master position.
3) Boot PC off tivo boot CD.
4) Insert floppy disk and mount:
mkdir /mnt/fd0
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0
5) Make file executable (only required the first time)
chmod +x nic_install
6) Run installer:
./nic_install tivonet
./nic_install turbonet
./nic_install airnet
Please let me know how it works.

Hi Mike,
Can you please download the new version and try:
./nic_install turbonet --debug
Please post the output.

Hi Jafa,
I'll give it a try tomorrow - it's peak viewing time here now, and TiVo is busy til bedtime...
Cheers,

Hey Nick,
This is probably something I have done, but before I could telnet TIVO but now I can't even get the address. I set the address with your progam, but I get a timeout when I try to ping. How do I set it to DHCP?

You can se it to dhcp by choosing 'change ip address' and entering 'dhcp' (v3 only).
BTW - you will need to download the new version.
Nick

Thanks I'll give it a try!

That worked! Thanks Nick
Posted by: brumey
Tried to use this new utility. Never had FTP loaded before, have a TurboNet card working for updates.
I get the following message after booting with an MFStools CD v1. and running the scripts as described -
Error Unable to access MFS leaving me at a /# prompt.
Any clues.......I simply need to get FTP and other utilities on the drive tonight. It's been down for three days!
Thanks in advance,
Kevin

I have TWO drive (2x60GB) Tivo, do both need to be in the PC when running this or just Drive A?
Can anyone point me to a simple way to get FTP and oother utilities on my Tivo?
Thanks,
Kevin

Hey Nick, when I try nic_install tivonet --debug,
I get a message about checking software version,
then an error saying cant open 'mfs'
any ideas?
Thanks!!
Ben

I get this too...
KG
Posted by: botman
try leaving the --debug off. It worked fine for me without it.
Posted by: brumey
Clarification - I get the same MFS error without using debug.
Does this mean it's finishes successfully and done or did it fail@!
I'm trying another script in a few, then the drives go back in the box and I'll await maturity in the utility.
Kevin

Hi guys,
I am running some more tests now.
Nick
Posted by: jafa
Re-tested from the top - works fine for me.
I will add some more debug information to see if we can work out whats going on.
BTW - The error is completly safe - everything is opened read-only until you choose to save at the end.
Nick
Posted by: brumey
I don't have the system up now but I am pretty sure it was Unable to Access MFS.
Can you tell me if you have a two drive tivo if both drives need to be in the PC for the upgrade????
Thanks
Posted by: jafa
Ok, try this:
mkdir /mnt/tivo
mount /dev/hdc9 /mnt/tivo
If it fails then the drive probably failed to unlock.

You should only connect the A drive.
I have just realized that all my tivos are single drive - I will bless a drive now and retest.
Edit - ok, this is the problem, the mfs access fails if you have a dual-drive tivo. I am fixing it now.
Nick

Hi all,
Problem solved.
The problem occured when trying to access mfs on a dual-drive tivo, I have just fixed it.
Please feel free to download the new version.

Jafa - You are D'man. I will try it first thing in the morning and report back the results. Such dedication encouraged me to contribute once I gain the knowledge.

Nick,
Any thoughts on compiling your install program to run on the TiVo? This would allow installation using the serial bash prompt.
Posted by: tkevink
Jafa - Thanks for your hard work. I just used yesterdays version (turbonet_install_20020720) on my 2.5.2 dtivo and it worked great! :)
but, I thought you'd like to know that I got that mfs error :( using the nic_install that I downloaded at 9:36pm pacific on my unit (single drive 100gb, v2.5.2)

Hi Kevin,
Can you please download again and try again (I just updated the mfs code).
If it still fails then please try adding --debug to the command line and posting the result.
Thanks

Two questions:
1. Will this work on an older Sony SA TiVo that still has 2.0.1 on it?
and..
2. If so, once that unit upgrades itself to 3.0 after making the call, what will happen to the TurboNet installation? Will I need to re-install or leave it alone?
thanks,
Blake

Yes it will.

When it upgrades it will blow away the turbonet install.
V3 comes with built in support so if you only wnat to do daily calls then simly change your dialing prefix to ,#401
If you want to be able to telnet in then you will need to re-install.

Hi folks,
[Major edits after more testing...]
Right - just tried it with the 20020721 version, and it still doesn't work for me :-(
Both 20020721 versions give the same output from --debug:
[Note - I have editted this to say hda3, hda4, since I've retried it a few times, and didn't notice that earlier, but I suspect that's just in the screen message]
Detecting TiVo hard drive...
....
Trying /dev/hdc...
kernel = /dev/hda3.
root = /dev/hda4 .
.....
Found TiVo hard drive - /dev/hdc (Secondary Master)
Error - Unknown active root partition.
The hdc bit sounds right - TiVo drive is on secondary master.
[UK TiVo (v2.5.5) with 2x120G drives, only master drive connected to PC]
I used MFSTools2 to create my 2 drive system from the original 40G single drive. Does this do anything different to the partitions compared to BlessTiVo?
This is frustrating....
I have also tried the "mount /dev/hdc9 /mnt/tivo", but that doesn't work either...gives exactly the same error.
I have tried a "mount /dev/hdc7 /mnt/tivo", but that gives me a "must specify a filesystem", which is the same error I get when using the CD based "turbonet/install.cd"
Maybe my hdc7 is buggered.... works fine in TiVo though....
Cheers,
Mike

I tried things out on an SA with 3.0 and all worked well. I've incorporated into our latest boot image and its currently uploading to our site. URL to the files are here:
http://www.ptvupgrade.com/site/downloads/
This is still not 'publicly' announced so please let me know if there are problems with this image (didn't get any feedback on the previous release i posted) - we'll make modifications and will not be officially 'releasing' (linking to it on the site) it until mid-august.
Still need to test things out on dtivo systems.

Nick, your latest nic_install
installer works like a charm. :)
I booted with your boot disk,
ran nic_install tivo net,
and if fixed all the damage done
by the prior TivoNet installer.
I now make daily calls with
tivonet using SW version 3.0.
I can also telnet and ftp into
my machine.
Im working on getting tivoweb up
and running. There are no issues
with Tivonet 1.9.4 and version 3.0 SW
right?
Thanks again!!!

Hi,
I'm probably just being thick, but where is the very latest version of the installer downloadable from, as the turbonet page appears to still contain a link to the image from 7/21/02 (and I thought that support for dual-drives, etc. was introduced since that last one?)...
Nick.

Hi Kevin,
This is normal - TiVo put the software release number in the kernel version (it is still 2.1.24) so it complains about a mismatch even though it is 100% compatible.
I figure that getting this message is better than the confusion of have 5 different drivers, one for each version, where the *only* difference is the version matching.
quote:
Jul 23 06:08:21 (none) kernel: ax88796: driver installed
The important thing is the message "driver installed".

Hi Nick,
The support for dual drives was added late Sunday (the 21st) and I didn't bump the version number since the morning release to saving having to update my website link.
THe version on the site is correct - I you downloaded it on or before the 21st, please download it again to make sure you have the latest version.

Jafa,
Thanks for your help,
I now have a working Pc - TiVo connection ... :-)))
It was me being silly - I saw an error from the install & assumed it had failed.... but the problem was elsewhere (see below).
After redoing the install from the CD with (nearly) the default settings, it appears to be working.
The problem was the cable from TiVo - PC. I was using a straight thru. Now have added X-over adapter, and all is well.... I remember reading somewhere that you should use a X-over on PC - PC connections.
DOH!
I have ping and telnet and ftp going...
Just have to install TivoWeb now....
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Nick,
I've given it another go, but it doesn't seem to like my version... :(
When I run "./nic_install turbonet", in response to the "Determining software version..." I get:
Error - Unknown model: "2.5.5-01-1-023".
Any chance of a quick revision to the code or workaround? ;)
Thanks in advance,

Hi Nick,
It's a UK model (the only one available in the UK  - Mnftr is Thomson - basically, a SA Series 1).
Mine's a dual-drive 601F.
Thanks,

Great Job, Nick
My tivo was sitting as an expensive
doorstop waiting till this network thing
was resolved.....
Posted by: jafa
A big hello to our UK friends... Thompson model now recongised.
Does anyone know the *exact* clock frequency of the bus on these Tivos? (a scope measurement would be ideal). A USA SA is 27MHz and a USA DTivo is 33MHz.
If someone would like to play with the timing setting in the installer it would also give an indication. A 33MHz bus equates to 5 and a 27MHz bus equates to 3. This number relates to the number of bus cycles per access so the lower the number the better. Make sure that it works with large packets such as a ping of length 1460. Please let me know and I will tweak the installer to use the optimal value.
Enjoy
Nick
Posted by: TechNick
Thanks Nick!
Is there some new code to pull down, so that I can try this out on a UK model?
I'm afraid that I may not be able to offer much help on the bus frequency query (especially since there seems to be a power outage to my neighbourhood, at the moment! ) but, with your guidance, can certainly try out a few parameters during the install, when I get home from work this evening (it's just gone 7am here).

Hi Nick,
I've pulled down the latest drivers, and will try them out when I get home.
I've also sent you a PM with a link to a picture I took this morning of my Tivo motherboard, in case it's of any use in determining the bus clock speed of the unit (sorry about the quality of the image, but I didn't have any power at the time, so had to rely on flash! ).
...this is assuming, of course, that being able to identify the ICs is of any use in determining bus clock speed...
Thanks,
Nick.

Error - Unknown active root partition.
Hi Nick,
I am not sure but I don't see a resolution to this problem. I am getting the same thing and am using your 20020723 release.
Any more info needed??

Hi Bruce,
What *exactly* does this line say:
root = /dev/hda4
root<sapce>=<space>/dev/hda4 ?
if so then the spaces are the problem and I can fix that.

Hi Nick,
No, there are no spaces, here it is exactly...
kernel=/dev/hda3.
root=/dev/hda4 .
Edit: There is a space before "root" even though the post is not showing it

Thanks Nick, now working fine on my UK Tivo.
Only thing I've needed to due (post-successful install) is tweak the routing table for modem dial-up to complete successfully (it would now dial-up and connect, but would not be able to pull down the updates due to the default gw being set to the Turbonet's LAN).
A few changes to the nicely separated rc.net file were sufficient to rectify this... :)
As for the bus frequency - I left the 'optimal' timing in place, and can get decent through-put (via large pings, etc.) without any problems (consistently <10ms response).
Thanks once again,
Nick.

I assume that you configured it to use dialup for the daily call. Did you comment out the route line?
I can change it so that it doesn't create a default route if you choose 'dialup'.

Because I don't know the frequency of the UK model the optimal is probably a bit conservative (5). Try configuring 3 and see if it works.

Hello Nick,
I have a Sony SVR-2000 at 3.0 with dual drives:
- drive a: original Quantum Fireball
- drive B: Maxtor 120Gb
I downloaded your latest turbonet drivers (Version 20020723) and, if I connect the drives as follows:
- Primary Master: DOS drive
- Primary Slave: TiVo B drive
- Secondary Master: TiVo A drive
- Secondary Slave: CD ROM
I get: Error - Multiple TiVo drives detected.
If I disconnect the TiVo B drive and leave only the TiVo A drive as follows:
- Primary Master: DOS drive
- Primary Slave: Empty
- Secondary Master: TiVo A drive
- Secondary Slave: CD ROM
I get: Error - Unknown active root partition.
I'm trying to recover from a previous turbonet install with 3.0.
Any ideas?

Yes, that's right (broadband's still a bit expensive over here, and the Tivo calls are via a freephone number :) )
quote:
Did you comment out the route line?
As a quick fix, yes (well, actually, just temporarily removed the default route via the command line, initially, to test it). Considered leaving the default route in place and adding a few static routes for the subnet(s) that I can identify as being used for the downloads (such as 204.176.49.40/24  ) - but this will need a bit more investigation/experimentation, when I've got a bit more time...
quote:

Hmm, not sure on that one.
Personnally, I'm quite happy to play around with the routing tables (to make it 'suit' my environment).
I guess for a initial install, it may be worth not setting the default route if modem dial-up's chosen, but presumably this may cause problems if remote access via tivoweb is desired...
Unfortunatley, I don't know enough about the daily updates to know whether or not simply adding static route(s) specifically for the updates (routed via the ppp adapter) would be sufficient to enable both modem dial-up for the updates, plus full WAN-type network connectivity via the Ethernet adapter...
Perhaps you can advise on this (I'll need a reasonable amount of time to work this out for myself! :D )

OK, I'll give it a go and let you know the outcome...

Hi all,
The problem with an extra space causing it to complain about no being able to find the active root partition should now be fixed.
BTW - If you are wondering, this new installer checks everything and won't touch the hard drive unless it is completly happy that it understands everything.

Hi all,
How easy is it to change to have the system to change from having its daily updates from the modem to TurboNet, and vice versa, as I would sometime would want to change these settings without having to do through the install process with removing HD ..etc, as my broadband connection might not always be availble.
And I thought, I could telnet into the TiVo, run a script, and it would change back to the modem.
I haven't got my TurboNet card yet for my UK TiVo, so I yet don't know what to expect yet.
Thanks in advance.

just adding my 2¢ feedback. Everything worked for me as well (but only tried with drive A attached, don't know about both A and B).

FWIW, you should be able to get a pretty precise measurement of the CPU clock on the UK Tivos by having someone do a `cat /proc/cpuinfo` on their UK model. I know it stores 2 decimal places of precision on a x86 Linux 2.4 system (but looks like it only gives an integer on my Tivo). It should also be in the boot logs where Linux calibrates the processor.

In that case...
Cpu: IBM 403GCX
Clock: 54MHz

Bogomips: 53.86

I finally got this to work after a long time. I originally was booting with my mfstools2 cd and nic_install couldn't recognize my tivo drive. I then booted with the new cd at ptvupgrade and it finally worked. Both times I used the latest nic_install on a floppy. Has anybody gotten this to work when booting with mfstools2?

Does anyone know the *exact* clock frequency of the bus on these Tivos? (a scope measurement would be ideal). A USA SA is 27MHz and a USA DTivo is 33MHz.
If someone would like to play with the timing setting in the installer it would also give an indication. A 33MHz bus equates to 5 and a 27MHz bus equates to 3. This number relates to the number of bus cycles per access so the lower the number the better. Make sure that it works with large packets such as a ping of length 1460. Please let me know and I will tweak the installer to use the optimal value.
Hi Nick,
Timing setting of '3' appears to work fine on my UK Tivo, in conjunction with 20020724 of the installer.
(I guess this makes sense if the CPU's running at 54MHz).
Haven't managed to come up with a suitable routing statement for statically routing daily updates via ppp, with default gw set to Ethernet LAN, so have settled (for the moment) for removing the default gw altogether (by commenting out the line in rc.net).
I'll continue experimenting with the routing, but all the essentials seem to be working fine at the moment :D
Thanks again,
Nick.

A follow up to Jafa and group. I used the latest driver only files and a boot CD from PTVUpgrads and I was able to run the script. I used the readme that extracts to the floppy. For those booting with a CD and not having Linux knowledge, I had to add a few paths to the commands. I have a dial drive Tivo.......
When making the NIC_INSTALL file executable, specify the full path IE, /mnt/fd0/nic_install.
Same when running.
The script ran well (I assume) and I was able to telnet and ftp to the box.
QUESTIONS for thre guru's out there:
1) During the Install I was asked to disable the INITRD. I did but what is this and by disabling what have I done.
2) Can I box up my Tivo box and perform all other hacks via FTP and Telnet now?
3) I am using a Linksys box to assign the IP address. I was hoping that I could assigne the same IP Address each time making it a little easier to control. Doesn't look like I can. Therefore, my question is, can I add a static address to Tivo via telnet or by FTPing a file to the box?
My next challenge is TivoWEB.
Thanks to Jafa and the gang.

Thanks in advance for all the effort. I know everyone said it before me, but you are amazing!
I didn't notice in my review of the posts as to whether you incorporated the full airnet code into the "final" release you posted yesterday.
I'm supposed (as per tracking site) to receive my AirNet adapter today, so I'm trying to get situated to install ASAP.
Can you tell me if the latest ISO image is "all I need" for 3.0 SA TiVo install of AirNet card?
Also (anyone) : Do I need the installer at all, as I heard un-support is already in 3.0 -- is this only for the turbonet cards (not airnet)?
Thanks again!

Hi AJ,
Yep, the new ISO image contains the new nic_install which now includes both the turbonet and the airnet drivers.
For v3 you will need to install the drivers *and* set the dialing prefix to ,#401
Please post how things go when it arrives.
Thanks

Hi,
Well I seem to be on the bleeding edge (again! :-), my new TiVo AirNet has been physically installed and the net_install process worked without a hitch (thanks Jafa), I've specified a SSID, 128bit WEP and key and TiVo is booting and installing the airnet module (as far as I can tell (kernel logs says - see below). I have easy serial access to TiVo, but I'm unable to ping the local address and have no arps. (Dlink PCMCIA card)
Is there a netstat TiVo binary available?
Suggestions please

Hi,
That all looks good - it can talk to the card correctly (it reads out the mac address).
Try disabling WEP encryption.
If it works without WEP then either there is a typo in your key string or your 802.11b card needs a firmware upgrade.
What brand/model of card do you have?

Dlink DWL-650 Card, NetGear base station.
Questions: WEP encryption, can I unload / reload the mod without rebooting the TiVo? I can't find a "rmmod"
What should hte new insmod line be in rc.net, WEP= something or just remove it?
Does the channel the wireless network is running on make any difference?
Finally - do you have the configuration binary compiled for use on the TiVo cf PC?
Thanks heaps for the help, Carl

Hi,
insmod and rmmod are the same thing - the easiest is to copy insmod to rmmod.
in rc.net, simply remove the key=xxx part.
The wireless channel is obtained from the AP automatically.

Help....
(Hope this should be posted hear - didn't want to start a new thread)
When running /nic_install/nic_install turbonet from the latest image that I downloaded today (7/29) I get the following error:

I am trying to install this on a Sony DirecTiVo.
Any ideas are helpfull.

Can you please PM me your startup script:

OK, thanks for rmmod, now linked and working. After a little more research this is the best I can make out, probably more detail than needed but.....
Hardware - UK Thomson TiVo, running 2.5.5, lifetime subs. The problem seems to be the ifconfig / routing. I decided to continue using the dialup connection for the moment during the install process, has this changed the routeing configuration?
Currenly, whenever I try to ifconfig eth1 .... up, I get the
[TiVo [S3] /sbin]# ifconfig eth1 192.168.0.50 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
IP struct was not filled in!
sa is: 0x20000 0xc0a80032 0x7ffffc14 0x7ffffc30
sa.sin_addr = 0x7ffffb78 a sockaddr is 16 bytes
[TiVo [S3] /sbin]#
Any ideas?
I also can't ping (network unreachable) either the loopback address or the airnet address, this seems to be a little more fundemental. What diagnostic tools are available? Where does the airnet_debug dump informatoin to?
So many quesiton, so little time....

I read all 5 pages of this dialog here and I am completely lost.
I need some serious help.
I have a 2 drive SA Phillips TIVO. The modem went out twice and I decided to install the wireless or airless internet access. I got the Linksys wireless router, and now have 2 computers connected to the cable . I have the Airnet adapter on the way and I'll take it with to Compusa, where they have the PCMCIA card on sale. I want to be sure it will fit the adapter. I'll try and see if it works with the built in antenna.
I need to install the software and I have no idea how it will work. How do I make the CD bootable ? I downloaded the 20728 iso file, it is on the CD, but how do I get the files unzipped ?
The TIVO has the 2.5 software on it.
Do I have to connect both TIVO drives in the computer to do the installtion , or the A drive is sufficient. I have 2 hard drives and 2 cd players in my system. If only the "A" drive needs to be in the computer, than I would hook it up as the slave in the secondary IDE.
I would like somebody to spell it out for me what I need to do. I printed out the TIVO Airnet software installation from http://home.attbi.com/~nickelsey/ai...l_software.html , but I don't know how to make the CD bootable. There used to be a zip file, which could be unzipped in Windows and make the CD bootable. If I have to use linux , I need the instructions.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Hi Carl,
This is normal and shows that is successfully opened the 802.11b card.

If you run ping on the tivo and ping 127.0.0.1 then you don't get a response?
The debug log is in /var/log/kernel.
Double check that encryption is disabled on both the tivo (key=xxx not present) and your router. Then double check that the ssid on your Tivo matches your router (ssid=xxx). Note that the ssid is case sensitive.

Hi,
The .iso file is a CD image. You will need to find the option in your CDR software to 'burn a CD from an image'.
Once it has burnt you should be able to look at the CD in windows and see a directory structure.
By burning the image the CD will automatically be bootable.

Hi Nick,
Well I'm up and running after more debugging. My notes:
SSID length seems to be important, my problem was the length of the string. Trimmed to 7 chars and it is now working.

I can understand how to tell what the chipset is on a PCI NIC, but how do you know on a PCMCIA card???
I know there is a page of "known to work" and/or "expected to work" on sillicondust.com, but it's very incomplete (in fact nothing is listed in a positive sense).
I found an SMC2632W card "lying around" work...but I have no idea how to tell if it'll function with AirNet.
Can anyone direct me to a page that specifies the chipsets for 802.11b cards??? (Tried the SMC website -- doesn't seem to mention it anywhere.)
Thanks in advance!

Thanks Nick, it worked fine. It took me a while to figure out how to to make an image copy. I just installed the Easy CD Creator Platinum yesterday, and took me a while to find the right way of doing it. I screwed up a few CDs, but what the heck, right.
I got the Air card adapter TODAY from 9th . I tell you, somebody is trying to get rich fast. THis thing is just a small board with the connectors on it. I go now and get PCMCIA card. I'll look for the Zoom air 4100 or 4105, but if I can't find it I settle for the Linksys WPC11 I think the name of the card . It costs now around 50 or 60 bucks @ Compusa. I already have everything else running.
Do I need both TIVO drives connected to the PC when I do the software installtion, or just the "A" drive is enough ?
Thanks again Nick,

Hi,
It soundslike you are running NTFS on your windows machine - the backup will only work with fat/fat32 or ext2.
Can't find nic_install?
Try:
/nic_install/nic_install airnet
Also make sure that you have the right CD... (downloaded from my site)
Do an 'ls' - if you see a directory 'turbonet' then you have the old turbonet CD. If you see nic_install then you have the right CD and it sould work.
The link to the CD is:

Nick, You are a gem !!! I downloaded the file again, burned it on a new CD, booted up , checked the files ( ls), and "nic_install " was there.
I think the problem was, that I was using the "TIVO Airnet - Software Instruction and "/" is missing from the beginning of the command.
I just typed in "nic_install/nic_install airnet" --
I got the instruction from your website I believe. http://home.attbi.com/~nickkelsey/a...l_software.html
I'll go back and double check. Maybe my printer left it off. You check too and make correction.
I run Windows XP and it runs fat 32, so I don't know why this problem. Would it make any difference if ....... I faintly remember there maybe a setting in CMOS about running DOS.
Anyway, how this thing suppose to work now ? After I install the drives into the TIVO and connect everything, how will it make the daily call? Can do it manually ? What do I have to do after it updates, if it updates , to version 3 ? Will I have to enter that #401 prefix somewhere ?
I am using Cable intenet, by Roadrunner, our "friendly" Time Warner Company.
I go and setup everything. I hope it will work.
Antal
Many thanks Nick.

Hi,
Assuming your don't have v3 then it should automatically be using AirNet for the daily call. To test, try forcing a test call and/or daily call.
When you get upgraded to v3 you will need to reinstall the drivers, and also add the ,#401 dialing prefix to tell the tivo to use the network card for its daily call.

Hey You Too, Randy !!! Whasup ? I guess you said taht already. You'r askin' the wrong guy. Did you do a CD to CD image copy? Did you download the correct file ? I can mail you a CD, I got several now. I too, was having problems and did a lot of experimenting and hit and miss. Maybe you din't "burn" it correctly. Put some lighter fluid on it and a match :) :) :) !
What are you trying to do ? Is you computer running OK ?
I just "finished" installing the Linksys wireless WPC11 card into my TIVO and since 1 April it finally came alive !!!.
After the TIVO processed the 3.0 software, I had to reinstall the software .
Now I don't remember anymore if I changed the IP address or not, but I left all other addresses "DHCP"
I think the most important was the selection of "Network" when was asked Dialup or Network under the 2.5 version. The 3.0 version already had "Network" there.
Now I have the cover on the TIVO and it is still talking to me. Now I am going to put it in it's normal place, under a VCR and 2 MPEG2 receivers. If it still talks to me, I'll be happy.
Now I have to figure out how to "Network" so I can talk to my other computer too.
I'll be back shortly

I opened up the TiVo tonight and did my first bit of work on it. After I backed up the drives I put my new TurboNet card in, ran "nic_install turbonet" out of the latest (20020728) zip file, and watched everything complete without error. I then installed a short jumper cable (about 2ft with a coupler on the end), reinserted the drives, and booted the box back up.
At this point, I can see the TiVo trying to do DHCP, but it never accepts the address:

the 1.1 address is my firewall/router (linksys). I can also watch it trying to connect via the net to the TiVo service, but without an IP it doesn't get very far.
I'm in the process of double checking all the cables (It can obviously send, but can it receive?) just to be sure that's not the problem.
Any thoughts if the cable isn't it? I am running v3.0-01-1-000 of the software, so the driver shouldn't be an issue. (I assume nic_install just sets up tnlited in the rc.sysinit file? hard to tell since it's a binary.)
Thanks!

Santa only checks his list twice ... It turns out that I needed to triple check the cables. The TiVo part works fine, but the cable end at my router had an incorrect wiring. Strangely, the cable worked fine when I plugged in my laptop, it got an address and I could ping and everything. I have no idea how that worked.
So I cut off the end and put on a new RJ45 connector with the right wiring, and everything works beautifully now! Yea!

Felicity, Re install /nic_install/nic_install Turbonet ( I have no idea what the difference is between the 3) and do not enter any IP numbers. I don't know what questions you have to answer, just make sure you type in the correct SSID and leave all others at "DHCP" . Also read my other posts.

P.S. I read your last post after I wrote the above. I also posted on the "Airnet drivers and instructions ..." thread.

Hi,
Is it possible to use a ADMtek Comet-2 Home-PNA card to attach a TIVO to a home network(and cable modem) via phone line. This PCI card has Linux drivers.
Posted by: jafa
Hi guys,
I have compiled the configuration part of the installer to run nativly on a tivo:
http://www.silicondust.com/nic_config_tivo_20020804.zip
This is a beta version (feature complete, no known bugs), I will add it to the normal installation procedure in a day or two when people have had a chance to play with it.
Instructions:
1) Extract the zip file.
2) ftp (network card) or zmodem (serial) the file to /tmp
3) Make executable (through telnet or terminal):
chmod +x nic_config_tivo
4) Execute:
./nic_config_tivo
Please let me know how it works for you.

About to try to install TurboNet again. Question; in the software instructions (\http://www.silicondust.com/turbonet...l_software.html)
Step 10 says to power up and test. ping 192.168.1.200 etc. I have a D-Link DI-704P router, with DHCP installed, but the IP Pool Starting Address is 100 and the ending address is 199 and I can't seem to change it.
Therefore the address of 192.168.0.200 seems to be out of range?
Anything I'm missing here or is there a way around this glitch?
Posted by: felicity
The .200 address was just given as an example, it has no special meaning. I would choose the IP address of your router (likely to be .1 or .254) and ping that. "ping" lets you know if the network is operational and that you can send/receive traffic from a certain other host.
Posted by: DriverJohn
felicity, thanks for the quick reply. Discovered how to change the ending address on the D-link site, so I guess that's a problem solved. (had originally run the TurboNet install using that IP for my 2.5version Tivo).
I have been reading the posts, and seems as if they all refer to TurboNet install per version 3. My Tivo is still loaded with version 2.5. Will the TurboNet installer work with it as is?
Thanks in advance.

It should. Worked for me, but after it upgrades to 3.0 you'll have to reinstall Turbonet. I assume it will behave like Airnet did. I had to reinstall airnet. Also make sure you add the " ,#401 " in the prefix of the modem intallation menu.

Nick, would you please write it down exactly how this should be done ? I have no idea how to do this. My telnet and Ftp is working with the TIVO. I get the prompts, but that's all I know.
Are you the same Nick answering e-mail at 9th tee ?

Can Tivo net be updated over ftp or telnet once you have installed it? Also, is there any other benefit to installing Tivonet besides updating guide data over the internet?

nic_config_tivo can be used to change the configuration of the turbonet installation directly on your tivo. It is currently available as a beta version and I will add this to the offical installaion soon.

Howdy Nick,
Check out this PCMCIA card
http://store.yahoo.com/justdeals/proxran80wir.html
They are selling it for $33.- (Supposedly sells for ($199.-) They must be dreaming. The price is on the bottom of the page.
www.justdeals.com is selling it.
Has onluy 40 bit encryption now, 128 is coming.
I just got me a refund type of pricematching from Office Depot. I got the Linksys WPC 11 card Friday for 79.99 with a $10.- rebate from Linksys. Yesterday, (Sunday) Best Buy was advetising it for 79.99, $20.- instant rebate, $10 mail in rebate. End price 49.99. (Could be .95). I was going to take the card back to Office Depot and get my money back, and go to Best Buy and get the card. In my haste, I took the wrong box with me. It was the emty box from the card I previously bought and it was missing the UPC code and of coarse it was empty. Well, I asked the if they do price matching. Sure, they said, and the rest is history.
Antal :D :D :D
I can't move those darn smilies where I want to. Keep going the same place . :D
P.S They got the D-Link DWL-500 (?) for $50.-

More folks should take advantage of this !!!!

Hi,
I am actually using one of those proxim cards in my main tv-watching tivo :)
Things to note:
1) You need to shave off one of the locating lugs from the card to make it fit in a SA (I was unable to get sockets that fit 3.3v only cards).
2) It needs a firmware upgrade.
3) To do the firmware upgrade you will need to install the windows drivers, then copy over a newer version of one of the driver files from another driver distribution. From memory the file was cl32.sys or something simular.
Once I did the firmware upgrade I found it to work well and the range is fine.

I am getting my 2nd Airnet adapter from 9th Tee on the 15th. I am going to install it temporarily in my wife's TIVO to set her clock and than I move it over into my 2nd TIVO. I don't really need it in there, because I don't want to pay for the TIVO service because they don't support the equipment I am using it with and that's the only TIVO the modem still works in. But I am also planning to get an IPaq 3975 pocket PC to get the programming guide for my BUD, BEV etc... combined. One guy is swearing by it. I am looking for a PDA anyway, but I wasn't planning on spanding $700.- for it......There is always something new I want !!!. Have to keep the economy going ....... :D

OK, I've got a Sony SA running version 3 with a TivoNet card with an additional 100gb hard drive (in addition to the original 30gb). I pulled the 30gb A drive out and put it in my PC as the primary slave (yes I changed the jumper settings). I then booted up my PC with the MFS Tools 2 boot cd. Prior to all of this, I had downloaded the nic_install_20020810.zip file and unzipped it and copied the contents to a floppy disk. Once I had booted off the boot cd, I mouned the floppy drive per the instructions, made the install script executable (chmod +x) and ran it. I filled in the static IP address that I wanted to use as well as the netmask and gateway and all was fine. I told it to apply and exit and it did. I put the drive back in my Tivo (after changing the jumper back to master) and booted it back up. I thought all was good because the Tivo actually came back up. I was wrong. I could not ping the static IP that I had assigned it and I checked my Windows 2000 server that I have acting as a DHCP server to see if my Tivo had ignored the static IP I had assigned and gotten an IP via DHCP. It had not. I then checked to the bash prompt via the serial port and was pleasantly surprised to see that I had one. I ran ifconfig and the Tivo thinks it's IP should be 192.168.1.111 (the static IP I assigned). I ran route to see what the gateway was set to and it reported correctly that the default gw was set to 192.168.1.1 (my Linksys router). From the Tivo, I can ping 192.168.1.111 with no problem but when I go to ping 192.168.1.1, I get no response.
I had my TivoNet working just fine for my daily updates running off DHCP before I ran this install on it. I wanted to be able to put TivoWeb on my Tivo and wanted to be able to do some more things over the network, so when I found this, I was happy.
Can anybody help me figure out what is wrong? Or, if nothing else, help me figure out how to get it back to the way it was before I ran this so that I'm atleast getting my daily updates over the network?
Thanks

I'm not sure what happened, but I rebooted my tivo tonight and tried the connection again and it works fine now.
I got the tivo-native config tool working as well and I wanted to thank you for the work you've put into this as well as the work you've put into helping the helpless like me :)
Thanks again

I just installed the latest build today, everything seems to work fine but FTP, I get no response with ftp browsers, and it seems to freeze IE?
Posted by: tivoupgrade
you probably need to fiddle with the 'passive' settings on your ftp browser. one way to see if its working ok on your tivo is to open a shell on your pc and just ftp directly to the unit - you should still be able to do it from the command line.

that doesn't work either

nevermind, a quick reboot seemed to solve the problem...
odd that a windows solution worked eh?

Keep in mind that only one ftp session can be open at a time. My IE6 seemed frozen too. Oops, had another ftp open.

I have the turbonet card I installed it in the dtivo unit ... what is going on
is the network can access the tivo unit fine ... when it starts to move say
a .ty file with tytools .... the unit locks up have to go to the console term
and do a reboot and all returns
when it locks up ... web/ftp/shell all stop tivo unit runs normal as does the
term connected to it via serial connection
this is with any type of file of any large size ... errors out and locks up
the instructions i had to install the nec card did not show doing a flash to
the dtivo unit nor did it show doing nic_install
could this be what is causing the nic to not send large files over the network .. its very easy to crash the nic card ... most files over tera term
will not send just errors out and deletes them over serial its fine
all things on the tivo unit work flawless but the nic sending out files ie
like .ty files ....
any insight would be most helpfull :)

I'm trying the SMC card with AirNet, and I don't see it registering at all. Since there hasn't ever been telnet/ftp on the box (it's just a plain-old upgraded TiVo), I really can't see the logs, nor do I even know wher it actually is, though I'm sure I can poke-around to find it -- I know a bit of linux.
I had a feeling this might happen. I have an Orinoco RG-1000 gateway, and I didn't feel comfortable trying to get another mfr. card talking to it. Looks like I'm probably right.
I do have an Orinoco Silver and Gold card around, but afaik those drivers aren't ready yet. This is compounded by the fact that the RG-1000 will allow me to enter a hex encryption key, but the "client manager" for the PC Card does not (in Windoze). So I'm testing with encryption OFF -- not what I want to run with forever.
I guess I can just leave the thing in there for now -- until I hear from Jafa or someone that the Orinoco drivers are ready...
Anyone have any other ideas???
Posted by: NuthinBetter
FYI: I found out from Agere that their "Alphanumeric" entry is basically just converted into hex ASCII codes -- should have guessed from their five char limit on alpha entries.
Going to try entering the hex equivalent in the AirNet/SMC -- still doubting it's going to work -- not because of Jafa's code, but the classic interoperability between the Orinoco cards and virtually anyone else's!

Folks:
Simple question... I've got 3.0 on a Philips SA, Turbonet installed, using native drivers.
I just want to make the IP static.
Here's my rc.net:
#!/bin/bash
# Copyright (c) 2001-2002 TiVo Inc.
#
if [ "$DEBUG_BOARD" != true -o "$dhcp" == true ]; then
if detectDynamicNet; then
mkdir -p /var/state/dhcp
/sbin/dhclient -q "$DYNAMIC_NET_DEV" 2>/dev/null &
fi
fi
Could someone who has system configured similarly to mine please post your rc.net, so I can just make the change manually?
I would use nic_config_tivo, but it complains that I've not installed the drivers (which is correct, because I'm using native ones) and I don't really want to screw around with mounting my drives on a PC again so I can use nic_install, since it won't run on the Tivo natively.
All I need is the freakin syntax for rc.net with a static IP!!! :)
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance...

First of all, thanks for a great product and a great forum.
I just wanted to pass on a problem I had, and the solution.
I have a DirecTivo and an SA Tivo, both with the Turbonet card. The DTivo was working fine, but the SA Turbonet stopped working. It had a green light, and the logs looked good, but could not DHCP...even tho it was connected to the same hub.
So I ran the nic_install and switched to static IP, but then the card wasn't being recognized in the logs and I could not ping it. I still had a green light. Performing a test call resulted in "modem failed" (because my modem is fried).
Turns out the Turbonet card was not seated properly. It is a tight connector. Either the extra heat caused it to pop out some, or the cable jostling when trying to solve the original problem. Or both.
Anyway, it might explain some of the intermittent problems people are seeing. As the unit heats up, the connector may expand and cause random failures. Seems simple now -- if you're suddenly having a problem, check the card connector. :)
I wasted a few hours on this. Hope it helps someone else...
-- Chris
P.S. I paid $800 for my SA Tivo almost 3 years ago...

I'd guess you've only just bought or installed your Tivo. The current UK version of the Tivo software is 2.5.5. You're probably going to be best off waiting a couple of days for it to update itself to 2.5.5 before installing the Turbonet software, as iirc it will wipe out the drivers etc in the upgrade, anyway.
Posted by: jafa
Hi,
At the end of the startup script on most tivos there is an echo string saying something along the lines of 'rc.sysinit complete' - the installer is looking for this.
You can fix it by doing an echo of the right string to append to your startup script.
I will check the details tonight - or i am sure it will be on this forum somewhere.
Nick
Posted by: bigblue
Jafa,
Thanks for the offer to look for the solution, however I decided to go the 2.5.5 route and it is (nearly) all working now. I can telnet, ftp and use TivoWeb (except that it throws some errors when trying to view the system info).
Thanks

Hello, I too just purchased a TurboNet card and it came in this evening. I've spent the last 4-5 hours working on getting it to work my an old Philips Tivo I have not used in a long time when the modem stopped working.
It is running v1.3 and I have been able to follow the instructions on making a backup of my tivo. It was an original 14-hour single drive system. I upgrade it by adding a 40 gig drive.
I then when in and ran the 'nic_install turbonet', but upon Applying the setings and exiting the TurboNet install program, I too am receiving this error message:
*************************************
Updating startup script...
Error - unable to find complete string.
/#
**************************************
Wondering if perhaps it actually worked I booted the drive up and tried to have it make a call (plain, and with ,#401) but no luck. It sounds like if the Tivo were able to upgrade itself to version 3.0 that would solve the problem of having to use 'nic_install'. But with my modem not working I am stuck.
One general question - is there any place where I can get an image file with 3.0 that I can restore from? I think this would help me bypass my non working modem and then start receiving updates via the network.
Are such images available (I haven't been active in the tivo community for a long time, so I am not sure if such things are available, or if it's taboo just to ask - lol).
Thanks,
Jim

Thanks for the installer image,
I got it all working, ftp, bash command, tivoweb
only have one problem now
I have a UK Thompson Tivo running 2.5.5, tubonet and extra 40gb drive.
I have a linksys router set to dhcp for my 2 pc's, the router lets each pc have an ip and web connection, but I cant get it to see the Tivo, (both PCs can see and ping the tivo)
PC's are 192.168.1.100 and 101, I set the tivo to 192.168.1.103 is there were I went wrong and missed out 102?
Is there any way to change the IP on the tivo without removing the drive again (I do have bash and ftp fully working)
if this is not the problem, how can I get the tivo to talk to the router to get an IP address, I have seen lots of mentions about V3 having DHCP support, but mines a UK one.
Thanks in advance I hope :-)
quick liltle PS any one else installed extra RAM? any idea how to check it works?
Thanks
Jason.

Hi Jafa
Im about to set up a friends turbonet ( I have tivo net ;) )
Is it possible to still cause the daily call to go via the modem ?
Here in the UK a lot of ISP have transparent proxies that wont work even with
the fixes to the tcl script for the call. As we dont have to pay for the call here some people want to carry on using the the modem because of this.

You'd need to telnet into the TiVO, remount / rw, edit the /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit file to change the ip address, remount / ro. Then you can restart the TiVo.
I'd suggest trying using an IP less than 100, as the Linksys may ignore computers trying to use IPs in the DHCP range that have not actually been assigned by it.

ok I have scripts set up for mounting RW and RO
where do I find the startup file again please sc.sysinit
I take it I just edit it with Joe

ok I found it in /ect/rc.d

I just want to make sure my steps are correct for a DTivo running 3.1
Yesterday I downloaded the image file and plan to use it.
1. Power down and install your turbonet card.
2. Pull your drive and run the tivoflash and kill_initrd utilities
3. Install drive into DTivo, let the flash util work and reboot
4. Pull drive and run nic_install to configure card. Here's where I'm a little confused after doing some reading. Installation of drivers isn't needed is what I'm understanding. Nic_install is only used here to configure the card
5. Set static IP on Turbonet if you don't want to use DHCP
6. Install hacks
7. Put drive back into DTivo.
Isthis correct? Is there anything I'm missing?
Posted by: Motty
Again, I ask if the install nic program is necessary if you are using version 3.0 and just want to have the wireless Airnet make daily calls?
Posted by: jafa
Hi,
Yes, you do need to use nic_install with AirNet... The drivers are not shipped with a Tivo by default.
