TiVo not responding to remote?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Twice in the past week my Philips SA with 3.0 (I haven't gotten my DirecTiVo yet :( ) has stopped responding to the peanut. The TiVo doesn't hang, it continues to show live TV or recorded shows, but it doesn't respond to the remote (the green light doesn't turn yellow on a press of a key on the remote, either.) A reboot clears all.

In other cases, it "stalls" for a few seconds and processes multiple keypresses at once (up to ten in one case, IIRC.)

Anyone else seen this? I'm wondering if this has something to do with having my DirecTV receiver (RCA 515) on serial control -- I never saw anything like this when I used IR with AT&T's POS Motorola cable boxes...

First, try new batteries. Second, make sure the remote address hasn't reset to another value. This happened to me once when the batteries were low. As you might know, a remote set to 0 will control every TiVo: hold down the TiVo button for about 5 seconds, then press the 0 button.

I've seen this several times also. I usually smack the remote a bit, or remove the batteries for a few seconds and then replace them. I guess none of that actually helps, as usually I just need to let it sit for a few minutes. Since the TiVo's light indicated that it's receiving the signal, it seems more like a software problem (not processing the received signal) than a remote problem (not sending a signal).

Regardless, I've never had to reset anything. Just wait a bit for it to fix itself.

This has happened to me quite a few times, but it seems more frequent with 3.0. The remote doesn't seem to do anything so I just keep hitting buttons and suddenly it wakes up in 5-10 seconds.

I've seen this on my TiVo's several times since getting Ver. 3.0
If you wait a bit, it starts working again. It's a pain though.

Do you have one of those IR extender Pyramid things that let you use your remote from another room? If so, it is possible that it is getting interferance and is constantly transmitting IR signals at your TiVo. This is a fairly copmmon thing. You can lower the antennae on it to solve the problem if so. Just look at the transmitter and see if the little red IR light in the front is constantly flashing.

This is a 3.0 thing. There's been a couple threads on the underground about it, but no resolution.

In my case, and in many others, it's related to running TiVoWEB. Some people get it without TiVoWEB though.

This isn't just a 3.0 thing. I've been experiencing this since long before 3.0 was out. And I've never touched TiVoWeb.

I think you have a different problem. In my case, under 3.0, when it locks up the light doesn't turn yellow on IR reception. It acs like it doesn't see anything.

I have seen it FREQUENTLY. When I first got 3.0, it was 4-5 times a day. Its now once a week or so. I don't think it Tivoweb is the cause. It has happened to people who don't run tivoweb.

For me, it NEVER comes back. The LED does nothing. I have even let it go overnight to see if it finally wakes up. It doesn't.

I have some idea of what MIGHT be going on to cause it, from a technical perspective.

I haven't heard a comment from Tivo, Pony or anything like that. I wish they would address it. I don't think this is a hacker problem, but I DO think it will happen more frequently to hackers. Since my box is hacked, I don't feel like I have a right to yell about it.

I, too, see this frequently, but intermittently, on my Phillips SA. It never happens on my DTivo.

Isn't it about time that TivoPony weighed in on this? What is going on here, Tivo? Please.

This happens from time o time on my ATT tivo (unmodified). IT seems like things get buffered up, and then they all get played back... as an example, while it is hung, if you try to change the channel 3 times, it usually dos do that, but only starts once it gets un-hung.... it just takes some time. I've never had to reboot, just had to wait it out. BTW... I'm using the serial cable to connect the tivo into my Motorola digital cable box... so it's likely not IR related....

I can't say if this is your problem or not, but I can tell you what I have experienced. When the batteries get low in the remote the remote is the thing to stop responding. Smack it as someone else suggested, or replace the batteries. That should work if it is the same problem I have had.

Posted by: willmw

It's not the remote batteries...been there...done that....

Is your remote programmed to control your TV?

When the TiVo stops responding to the remote, try using the remote to raise or lower the TV volume, or turn off the TV. If that works, but the TiVo still won't respond, it's *not* the remote - it's the box.

I had this happen twice in the last week, for the first time. No resolution, it just kinda started working again a few seconds later. I have a Series 2 with 3.0, and backdoors not enabled.

I've seen it occasionally with both my (unmodified) DTIVO units. It's not the remote - I use a MX-500, and acts the same if I try it with the peanut too. After a few seconds (10 - 20), it processes all the commands I had tried. Never did it before the recent software upgrade.
