Replacing modem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello,

Modem in my Sony SVR 2000 is dead. Just wondering if there is an easier/cheaper way to replace it than sending it to Sony's Repair Facility (quoted about $150). Any info greatly appreciated.

What thread on using an external modem? I can't find one that gives anything approaching complete instructions.

Thanks!

He means this one.

I'm sure if you ask for clarification on that thread someone will help.

Thanks, much. I found that just after I'd posted. I'm new to the forums and didn't realize I was basically looking in the wrong forum!

I had already read that thread a month or so ago when I started considering using the external modem. It seems to spend much more time talking about configuring the modem, and says little about configuring the TiVo to use it.

But I'll inquire in that context after I've re-read the entire thread.

Thanks!

It looks to me like setting the dialling prefix to ,#319 is all that's required for TiVo to recognise the modem (the tricky bit is setting the modem up - modems normally expect several more signal lines from the host computer, Dan's AT sequences tell the modem to ignore them).

This appears to be a new feature in 3.0 that makes the drive hacks for the early versions unnecessary.
