Meet My Folks?

So, did anyone watch it? What did you think?

I had my first Tivo screw up with this show. I had set it up to record this show a while ago. Then last night i noticed that Tivo was recording it, I had totally forgot about it. I tried to play it starting from the beginning and it wouldn't play it. It actually stopped recording it. It's the first time it's ever done anything "wrong" in 3 months.

Luckily I was recording the eastern feed, so when i didn't get it, i just recorded the west feed. I'll watch it tonight probably.

I thought it was lame. I don't want to spoil it, but it bothered me that the daughter had not met any of the guys before they showed up to meet the folks. The guys all turned out to be weird in their own way, and they all did poorly on the lie detector test, yet one had to be chosen. Ugh.

We were wondering about that. We missed the first couple of minutes and were wondering how the daughter knew the guys. It had its moments, but I don't think this will be a season pass in our house.

I thought it was the most disturbing show I have seen in a long while. It was like watching a train wreck. Why would anyone subject themselves to this?

ex-girlfriends show up and tell their tales.

Videotapes airing your darkest secrets.

No matter how painful it got, I could not look away.

Posted by: LUVmyTIVOinKC

I couldn't watch it all. I'm sorry but there is NO way I would go through that for a date with a girl that I had never even met.

Are you sure it was "wrong"? :p

I can't imagine a guy wanting to go through with all that. They drag out all the skeletons in your closet. Do people really want to be on TV that badly??

Posted by: okleydokley

I admit it, I saw it.. (I will never get that hour of my life back...)

I kind of put my foot in my mouth during this show.. My wife kept saying what a bunch of scumbags these guys were, and couldn't understand why guys with such bad histories would go on the show.
I said that everyone has some dirt that can be pulled up, .... So she started quizzing me and would not let up.. I finally admitted to a few lesser offenses when I was a kid, but I would never want a team of well paid TV exec's looking into my past on national TV. I bet these three guys have a very hard time finding dates in the future, and they better hope that future girlfriend’s parents don't see this show...

MrSpiff -

Did you perhaps start watching it from the To Do list instead of Now Playing? For some stupid reason, if you select "Watch Now" from ToDo, it stops recording, and from that point forward, you have to rely on the live buffer to get the rest of it. Really bad if you start watching with say 10 minutes left. By the time you've caught up to that last 10 minutes, the live buffer has already gone too far and you'll miss the end of the show.

For the record, I didn't watch Meet My Folks. Sounds like a good decision on my part.

For those of us who dodged this bullet, what were some of the skeletons that came out of the closet?

Posted by: JYoung

I watched something a little less brain numbing, Airwolf and Knight Rider reruns..... ;)

Hmmmm. Let's see there were so many:

1. One guy liked to be spanked
2. One guy slept with his ex-girlfriend's mother
3. One guy cheated on his SAT to get into school

It was pretty funny. The look on their faces were priceless when they revealed that information

There is another episode schedule for Wed @ 7p CST.

Don't forget, the guy denied he slept with an ex-girlfriend's mother, but this was "confirmed" during his lie detector test. (this guy won the weeklong vacation with their daughter)

Also, the cheater emphatically told the parents that while he did cheat on his SAT's he never cheated after that, but his lie detector test concluded that he had cheated on tests in college.

My favorite moment was when the daughter was in the hot tub with all three guys giving a lap dance and the TV people provided a simulcast of this action to the parents bedroom TV

hmmmm. do I smell an emmy???? perhaps not.

Posted by: tstowell

I liked it when Kory was ragging on how he wanted to be a professor at a university becuase they were smarter than PE teachers.......

WARNING SPOILER BELOW..................(not sure how to do the spoiler tags)

And the Dad turned out to be a PE teacher/Coach. The look on his face was priceless

If I watch it again, I'll know up front that the producers are knowingly sending over three weirdos and will see how long it takes for the daughter and her folks to catch on.

According to:

http://www.msnbc.com/news/784058.asp

the house is rented (thus all the fax machines and video hookups), and the chosen guy and the daughter don't necessarily have to go to Hawaii at the same time.

Posted by: jsmeeker

Bringing out the ex-girlfriends in person was interesting. Two of them told the girl and her parents how their guys cheated on them numerous times.

In the previews for the next show (airs Wednesday, in its regular slot), one of the ex girlfriends talked about how "he can't satisfy a woman". :)

I wonder if there will be shows where a guy and his parents pick a girl??

Posted by: Keyser Soze

I'm watching it right now (thanks tivo).....

pretty funny.... mindless crap... but funny.

I really enjoyed the show.
I thought it was hilariously funny. I couldn't look away.
Yes it was a terrible trainwreck! But oh was it a gruesome hilarious train wreck. :)

I'll definitely watch the next episode. Maybe the amusement won't last long, but they've got me for at least another couple episodes. :)

The lie detector test was used in a BS manner though. Presumably they calibrated it and just didn't show it, but the questions were way too ambiguous. So many questions would could cause a lying reaction when really the answer is "I don't know," "Maybe, depends on what happened," or "I can't remember." Not knowing something for sure, can cause someone to feel guilty like they're lying, even when to the best of their knowledge, they're not.

But hey, I figure it's just for fun to make 'em sweat. But I don't believe for a second that all the results are right.

Posted by: CPTPez

Assuming they properly administered the lie detector test... we would have only seen a minute portion of it. Lie detector tests take hours - during which simple questions are asked in order to get a "baseline from which to determine honesty/dishonesty in responses.

I am a former prosecutor and got to watch several (behind the mirror) - they are really fascinating.

If they just strapped those guys in and asked the key questions - there is no way the poligrapher could tell whether they were lying.

Also, keep in mind the immortal words of George Constanza - "Jerry, It's not a lie if you believe its the truth."

Posted by: Sinuralan

Indeed. That's what I meant by 'calibrating' the detector. Finding out what people's responses to real things are.

To some it may not be a lie if you believe you're telling the truth, but you can also have lie stress reactions when you're telling the truth to the best of your knowledge, but have a strong fear that you might be wrong. If you're the cocky type with no doubts, well, no sweat there..

What did people think of tonight's choice? Don't spoil it in case there is someone who hasn't watched.

It seemed tonight that the girl somewhat knew the guys from before. I am wondering if they got to meet and she chose the three to come visit her maybe from friends or from contestants

Posted by: linh

Too bad there wasn't a "Meet My Folks" version that featured 3 women competing for one man.

I still don't think she knew them in advance. It was less clear, though. In the first show the dad answered the door and let the guys in and introduced them to his daughter. In the second one, the daughter answered the door and then introduced the guys to the dad. But the introduction was brief, like "Dad, this is Camron", and she could well have learned that much on the front porch. Other than that, though, the show's setup was about the same. They hit us with the first set of dirty secrets almost immediately this time, so there was no doubt to the viewer that all of these guys had things they wanted to hide. In the massage sequence, the daughter should have said something IMHO since it was her idea.

Oh, another thing, my SP on TiVo has picked up the next episode as showing at 2:30 am (ET) on August 1. I assume the local NBC affiliate is showing something else during primetime and then running the network stuff later. Thanks TiVo for picking up on this! :)

Posted by: JYoung

you know, one could look at this show as the parents prostituting their daughter so they can be on TV..
(I don't know, I didn't watch the show...)

Posted by: Fleegle

People on AintItCoolNews are calling it "Pimp M y Daughter". That's exactly how it seems to me.

Also, the families they have had on so far indicate a mysoginistic(sp) relationship. In last night's episode, the mother even came out and said it was all up to the husband. Both mothers and both daughters really seemes to be under the father's thumb.

Not that it will keep me from watching it. It's becoming a guilty pleasure.

To me, the parents always seem like the least-willing participants. But, bottom line, they are participating.

Posted by: David Bolling

The Dad always seems willing to "participate" as soon as the bedroom TV is turned on.

considering the high male-to-female ration (it seems), I'm not sure if this show will ever see the light of day. It would make men seem like players. ;)

Posted by: nmiller855

I would like to know about the dark sides of the guys my daughters date. So far I've been a pretty good judge of their character from the start (2 losers, 1 control freak & 1 really nice guy). Living in a small town helps.

Posted by: linh

I'm surprised that parents don't do criminal, credit or background checks on their daughter's boyfriend/partner/husband/whatever.

Surely, there must be a market for this! ;)

Posted by: hookbill

I just thought it was a bad show, plane and simple. The spanking thing really turned me off. I'll bet in the questionaire for the show they ask you to tell them some embarrasing truth about yourself and they threw that in there for shock value.

To me, it was another real cheap knock off of Survivor.

Posted by: Dusty

I just watched the first one. I kept saying "man, this is f***ed up!" But didn't turn it off. LOL I did think some questions on the lie detector were not yes or no. (also, how do you cheat on an SAT? As I recall there are several versions of the test, and you probably wouldn't be sitting next to someone with the same one...)
I'll watch the other one that is recorded. Great trashy reality tv. :D
But I can't find any updates on them, like did Shena (sp?) and Chris really go to Hawaii? Did they like each other as they got to know each other? I want follow up!

Posted by: spartanstew

My thoughts on the second episode (Shane, Camron, other dude)

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

My wife and I were shocked that they booted off Shane first. The worst things about him were that he never had money and he was bad in bed. The father decided he would rather have Camron, who cheated on his ex and has sex with every girl he meets, than Shane.
At least the father didn't let Camron have the final date (Can't remember the other dudes name), but what were the mom and dad surprised about on the lie detector? I could have told him the answer to every question he asked regarding these guys.
As soon as they got rid of Shane, my wife said "Wow, the dad would rather his daughter go out with a guy that's going to screw her, cheat on her, and then probably leave her (Camron), then a guy that's always broke".

I think that Dad was clueless.

It's coming up next week. :p

They are continually tinkering with the format of this show, and it's getting better IMHO. I watched last night's episode ("The Atnips") and saw lots of changes. (no spoilers)

The daughter led the three guys into the house, and gave more of an impression that she knew them in advance. The guys' secrets were "a little" weird, not "a lot" weird. There were no fax machines. The guys didn't have to do goofy contrived things during dinner. The parents were not notified when to turn on their TV to catch the kids in the act. The ex-girlfriends did not show up in person (one showed up on video).

So, instead of having to choose between three very strange guys who were forced to do offensive things, now the parents are choosing between three slightly flawed guys who are given some chance to act naturally.

Posted by: Sinuralan

I thought the contrived stunts during dinner were the best part of the show. Maybe I just enjoy seeing the father get pissed off as the imbeciles at his table. :) I've been enjoying the show much, much less since they removed that.

How about the father who'd rather his daughter go to a Hawaii with a guy who he believes will record his daughter having sex without her knowledge/consent, over the guy who's worst secret was that he had condoms.

Posted by: nmiller855

The dinner segment of the guys asking about the parent's sex life was priceless. Some of the parent's choices have made me wonder what was left out of the taping.

I think Dad has lived his life by intimidation of others. So as a true control freak, he asked his daughter what she wanted, got the answer, and picked the other one. :)

Coming this Monday, 8/26! :D Previews looked great...as the dad is all excited because the 3 girls, who in a 10 second glimpse all looked like Laker girls, flirt with him! Should be funny because the dad is always the tough guy, but because it's girls trying to win, the mom will most likely me the hard a**!

So, in previous episode the Dad took the boys out and had them do physical exercises. Is Mom going to take the girls to the kitchen, and have them bake a cake?

It will be interesting if the girls are as "bad" as the boys. The boys have all been real losers.

Of course the parents have been real pimps.

Hasn't pretty much everyone involved with this show been a loser.
