3 months free service? not so..

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just got another email about the 3 months, no risks, trial of Tivo Series II. Was thinking about sending the link to my brother, but after reading, doesn't look like it's quite "risk-free".

It looks like the 3 months is only free if you remain a Tivo subscriber. You have to use your credit card to pay for the first 3 months, then you only get a refund if you remain a subscriber..

if you didn't like the Tivo, the free-trial would cost you:

$38.85 (3 months service) + approx $20 (return shipping)

about $60 bucks.

Does that actually happen, though? :D

That is a scam.. Free-trail (only if) is a lame practice if you ask me. Though I have not researched the fine print..

It's not a scam.

If you keep the service for three months, you get a rebate of three months service. If you cancel the service within 90 days, you get back whatever you have paid. I agree that these two parts of the offer seem connected, but they aren't. The 90-day risk-free trial is just an extension of the standard TiVo 30-day trial, if you activate by July 31.

Like my post said I did not read the fine print. I would do so but I am too lazy and not interested in Series 2 Standalones.

I JUST WANT A DIRECTV2 UNIT!

But that didn't stop you from calling the promotion a "scam", did it?

i read the fine print. Rebate will occur by 11/31/02. But you must be a CURRENT tivo subscriber. The 3 months would be Aug, Sept, Oct..

This is all the "fine print" I could find:
quote:
Terms and Conditions:
Offer expires at 11:59 p.m. (PT) on July 31, 2002. In order to take advantage of the 90-day money-back guarantee and 90 day TiVo service rebate, customer must activate the TiVo service by July 31, 2002; otherwise, standard 30-day money back guarantee applies from date of purchase of TiVo DVR. Rebate of $38.85 (3 months @ $12.95) will be credited to the credit card customer used to activate TiVo service by 11/31/02. Customer must be an active TiVo subscriber at time rebate credit is issued.

This just protects them against someone cancelling after 1 month and trying to collect 3 months' worth of the rebate.

There's no language addressing how those who cancel with the 90 day window will be compensated.

See here for the details of TiVo's money-back guarantee. As the special offer says, this is extended to 90 days for activations by July 31.

quote:
TiVo offers a 30 day money-back guarantee. You may return the Recorder for any reason for a full refund* within 30 days of receipt of your shipment. For details about how to return your recorder within 30 days, please call 1-877-367-8486

*Returned merchandise must include all original components, literature, warranties and packaging in the same saleable condition in which it was received. Refunds for returns will cover product amount and any sales taxes charged. Refunds will not be made for any shipping and handling charges. Returns not meeting these requirements may be subject to a restocking fee equaling 15% of the price paid for the recorder (not including taxes). Damaged merchandise, cosmetically or otherwise, is subject to a restocking fee on a case-by-case basis. If an order has shipped, it is the purchaser's responsibility to accept the shipment and return the order per our Return Policy. Orders that are refused at the designated shipping address may incur a 15% restocking fee.

This only discusses returning hardware. Where do they explain the service rebate if you only keep it for, say, 60 days?

Hi guys,

Under this promotion, we do refund the paid portion of the service if someone cancels within the first ninety days.

Again, that's just for systems and service purchased via this promotion...and it ends soon! Get your friends over to www.tivo.com and order those systems. ;)

There doesn't seem to be a link on your website for the promo.
