Replaced B Drive. Couple of Q's

I just replaced the B drive in my upgraded Hughes DTivo with a warranty replacement from Maxtor in hopes of eliminating some annoynig stopple/stutters. A passed the powermax utilities tests, but B had some problems although no error number was given. The replacement went pretty smoothly, but I have a few questions.

* The replacement drive (D540X OEM -- 480D04H or something like that) is quite a bit louder than my original upgrade drive (exact same model). I can hear the heads seeking from across the room. Is there any way to quiet this drive down a bit?

* I have seen some occasional stuttters in older programs (not nearly as frequent as before the new drive, but still annoying). I copied the contents from the old B drive to the new one using dd. Could these be artifacts from the original recodring on the presumably bad drive? I suppose that these programs could actually be locaterd on the A drive and not the new one -- is there any way to tell?

If I can't eliminate the stutters completely, I'm going to restore my backup image to the single 80 gig drive and see how that goes. I'd really rather not do that since I've got the complete, unwatched season of "The Shield" on there...

1. styrofoam :)

2. Could be due to old errors, but most likely it's just the new drive remapping the (few) bad sectors it may have. It should go away in a few days.

I noticed yesterday that there was stuttering in the live TV buffer while some recordings that I'm pretty sure were recorded on the upgrade drive (A drive was _full_ when I originally upgraded, so I would presume that shows recored around that time spilled over to B) appear fine. Is it correct to assume that the live buffers for both tuners are on the original Quantum A Drive? If so, I might just replace that drive too (as long as I can find a relatively cheap replacement).

The Quantum passed the powermax tests (SMART and factory recert -- didnt' run the destructuve tests), but I've read elsewhere on the forum that the modified firmware makes it possible for these drives to pass powermax when they have problems.

The noisy drive appears to have quieted down quite a bit after running for a day -- heck, I'm not really sure that it was the new maxtor being noisy. Now to do something about that sunon fan running at 12v -- probably gonna wire a pot inline to allow variable control of the fan. Too loud at 12v (but it keeps the DTivo at 41C) and too hot when wired to the Mobo connector (57C).

I think the buffers are just considerend another program and float around on the drives like other recordings.
