quality - black and white vs. color

I normally record on "high" or "medium," but decided to record the Twilight Zone marathon at "basic." It seems acceptable to me in direct contrast to what I recall from my bad old days of having a single 15 GB drive.
I imagine that this is a combination of slow moving action and the black and white image. Would someone who knows more about mpeg2 encoding fill me in on the details of color vs. black and white bitrates?

TiVo is colorblind, unless your using VBR on a S1, it records evreything at the setting you choose. On programs like Twilight Zone, which doesn't have a lot of fast action scenes, (as you pointed out) basic can look pretty good.
I suppose that pixelation might also be less noticable in monchrome?
