Question from Friend - Can you upgrade a Dishplayer PVR

I have this em er hmm, ahem, "friend" (actually I really do). Who was wondering if you can upgrade a Dishplayer PVR with a new hard drive ?

Seems like I read on some other forum you can just put in a (blank?) larger drive and it will update itself next call. If that's true it would be because the PROM has enough smarts to 1) recognize the drive is blank (or pieces of the OS ar missing) and 2) phone home for the missing parts. I think it might have been a UTV thread that compared upgrading the UTV to be just like the DISHPlayer. Do a Google search for "Upgrade DISHPlayer disk"

The Dishplayer 7100/7200 (the ones by Microsoft) can be upgraded, as indicated above. Drive sizes up to 137GB will work (I didn't click the link above, but if it's older it might say not to go above 40GB or risk losing recordings. The software has been updated since then to allow larger drives.)

The DishPVR 501/721 (designed by Echostar) cannot be upgraded at this time.
