2 SVR2000s, 2 different boot processes, prompt issues...

I have two Sony SVR2000 TiVos. One is a slightly older vintage (about 1.5 years old), the other is a newly aquired refurb. I have upgraded both units to 32MB RAM and dual Maxtor 60G drives. The only difference in the drive upgrade is that the older one is running a PTVUpgrade.Com kit, and on the newer one, I did the upgrade myself based on the original 30G drive image.

Although both units have the same software version, both units boot differently. My older one powers up with a screen showing the TiVo dude on his "stage" with the text "Your recorder is starting up. One moment please", then goes to the standard gray "Almost there. A few more seconds please" screen. The newer one powers up with the standard gray "Welcome. Powering up" screen before going to the same second gray screen.

Prior to the playing of the intro cartoon, are the boot graphics pulled from the hard drive, or off the motherboard? If it comes off the drive, then why would the two units differ when they're both running the same identical software version?

Another difference is that I am able to get into the diagnostic menu (via the serial port) on the older unit (running the PTVUpgrade.Com drive image), but not on the newer one (running the upgrade that I performed here). Is there something special that has to be done to the drive to enable this prompt? I recently found out that the memory upgrade is useless unless you can get into the extended menu and tell the TiVo that it's running 32MB instead of 16MB, and I can't even get a prompt on the one unit.

Any info on these issues would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve.

The newer Sony has the new "secure" PROM, similar to DTiVo and Series 2.

So, is there any way to get to the prompt? Or was the memory upgrade just a waste of money?

Steve.

Not that I know. Yes, since you cannot change the setting.
