I can't get past the "few more seconds screen". Here is my story:
Last Friday we had a T-storm. Came home to no sound thru my Directivo. I checked the AV receiver, cables, etc. Everything looked OK so I just decided to Reset the DTivo. After reset the unit got stuck on "just a few more seconds".
I read thru the forums and assumed that it was a HD failure. Decided to try to fix it thru an upgrade (I'm out of warranty). I bought an 80GB 5400 WD drive.
I first tried to perform a backup but couldn't get that to work. So, I found some DTivo images and downloaded those.
I've read and re-read the notes. Each time I've done mfsrestore it has worked successfully. I then run edit_bootparms because I have a WD "A" drive. I then change the jumper. I plug in the drives and I'm still stuck at the "few more seconds" screen!!!
I'm using mfstools 2.0
Here are my questions:
1. I have a dual drive DirecTivo (A=30gb, B=15gb). Can I put these 2 drives aside, use an image from a 40gb single drive DTivo (from the ftp site) and restore that image to my new 80GB HD? (And leave my B drive out?)
This is what I just tried and I'm still stuck on "few more seconds". My drives show the proper size at boot; mfsrestore is successful and reports back 78 hours. Why can't I boot???
2. I have done the 2 lights test and I do get 2 amber lights. Does this really mean that all my hardware is OK? I did have a storm so I am concerned that it may not be disk related.
3. Are the "Welcome. Booting Up" and "few more seconds" screens coming from the HD or from ROM?
4. After "Welcome. Booting Up" I get a flash of a pink screen. Does this mean anything?
Here is what I did:
attach new A drive as primary slave (hdb)
boot with mfstools 2.0
hit <enter>
type:
mkdir /mnt/dos
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos
then type:
mfsrestore -xzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdb
(this comes back successful, reports 78 hours. tivo.bak is the image that I downloaded and renamed)
I then unmount and reboot with the TivoMad floppy for the non-Quantum "A" drive fix.
I run:
mad/edit_bootparms hdb -i
(this doesn't report anything, just gives # prompt)
I disconnect from my PC. Then I reset the jumpers, plug drive in Tivo. Cables are good.
I get "Welcome. Booting Up", then quick flash of pink screen, then I get stuck on "just few more seconds."
Thanks for any help. I've been at this for 4 days and I'm not getting anywhere.
ps---I don't known any Linux.
Thanks,
Brian

This FAQ from Hinsdale covers what to do if you are upgrading a dual-drive DirecTiVo. Look at Upgrade Configuration #2 under item 10) ... it looks like it should work if you follow those instructions.

Sticking at the "Few More Seconds" screen is often a sign of more serious hardware issues that cannot be repaired by drive or software replacement and will need to be repaired by the manufacturer.
