I have an original Sony SVR2000 with a 30G harddrive and want to take the upgrade plunge. (running 3.X)

I plan on using Tiger’s Mfs Tools to do the upgrade, and would appreciate it if someone could double check my supplies list before I get started.

1) Torque security screwdriver
2) New hard drive (thinking of 100gig 5400)
3) Mounting bracket (from 9th tee)
4) Additional IDE cable (also from 9th tee)
5) Tiger’s Mfs Tools (downloaded)

I plan on adding the new drive as a second drive (after I perform the backup) and have a question about restoring. I plan on buring the backup of my original disk to a CD. If at any point I screw up the installation, assuming I created the backup correctly, should I be able to take that backup and restore it to the orginal drive, disconnect the second drive, and be back to my "original" configuration? (minus warranty of course :D )

One other item of concern. Lets say I get my upgrade working hunky dory, and someday Tivo comes out with 4.X. AFTER this happens, and I restore the original drive again (with 3.X), will my drive be upgraded with the new software?

Thanks!

OH, BTW, I plan on using the instructions from:

Some things to consider:

Why a 100Gb drive? A 120 is the largest drive which TiVo hardware can address all the space on (the exact limit is 137Gb) and they're only a little more expensive than a 100.

Which version of MFS Tools will you use? MFS Tools 2.0 has some issues which you probably don't want to get involved with. MFS Tools 1.1 is the current 'safe' route.

The safest possible upgrade profile at the moment is as follows:

Use MFS Tools 1.1. Make a backup of your A drive and burn to CD. Either use dd to copy your A drive to the new drive (will take several hours, but keeps all your recordings) or use MFS Tools 1.1 to restore to new drive (much quicker). Use TiVoMad to expand new drive. Put A drive somewhere safe.

Make sure you tell TiVoMad your TiVo is >140Gb (even though it currently isn't) so that you can add a big B drive just by blessing it.

This method makes no changes to your A drive at all - if anything goes wrong you can replace the A drive in the TiVo and start again.
