I recently bought a DSR6000 off Ebay.It didn't come with the ownwers manual,so I just hooked it up in place of my mirrored DirecTv receiver hoping it would guide me thru the setup. After getting the "Welcome.Powering up..." prompt,it says"Almost there.A few more seconds please..."then it does nothing! I was told I may have a bad hard drive or software problem and referred to this forum from the DirecTivo forum.Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The good news is that a hard drive change isn't that hard. Start by reading the Upgrade Guide in the Upgrade Centre. The bad news is that you'll probably have to download an image from the net.
Start by trying to take a backup of your current drive, the backup tools only need to read the system areas of the drive to make a valid backup, and your problem is more likely to be in the vastly larger streams areas.
You will then need to get a drive at leaast as large as the one the backup came from - most people just get a 120Gb Maxtor or Seagate 5400 RPM drive.
You should then be able to restore the image to the new drive and all will be well.
I don't know why the DTiVo guys sent you here, your problem is more of an Upgrade issue than an Underground one.

Crack it open and look at the modem circuit for burnt spots between it and the tuner. I've seen a few that are fried and won't boot any further even with a good drive. You can use Maxtor's Powermax on that drive to test then restore to it if it's good.

The bad news is sticking at "Almost There" (not "powering up") is often a sign of more serious hardware damage as electriclegs mentioned and may not be solved by drive replacement.
Electriclegs.. is this something you can repair and whats your cost?

I got a T-60 from eBay that has this exact problem. A close inspection reveals a small scorched patch between the RJ-11 jack and the tuner... looks like a miniature bomb went off there. (thanks for the tip ElectricLegs)

I too, am most interested in finding someone who can repair this. Alternately, does anyone know if a replacement motherboard for the T-60 is available. Any info greatly appreciated...
Thanks,

I called Sony today about getting a replacement MB- no go. They don't sell parts at all, not even Sony Authorized service centers are supposed to work on the T-60's according to the CSR I spoke to. Looks like the only option is to return it to Sony for repair. Apparently they have a flat rate for repairs of around $130 (including return shipping) regardless of what the unit needs. Not so bad I guess, I was figuring a new motherboard would run me at least $100. If anyone out there wants to make this their problem, I will sell this unit for $200 shipped via UPS (send me a PM) . Otherwise off to Sony it goes.

As far as I have seen, they don't actually repair your unit and send it back, they send you a 'refurbished' unit which means either an easily repaired (replace hard drive or IR emitter, etc) problem or a used/returned unit. It's really a crap shoot on what you will get, you could get a unit that's much older than your original and has had work done on it, or you could get a close to new 'I didn't like the color' unit. I doubt they even fix the boards with serious damage, they probably just use those machines for parts.

This is pretty much what I thought. I've heard that people rarely get the same unit back from repair. That's OK with me though, maybe I'll get a newer unit in return. Mine is dated 02/01, is that old? When did Sony start producing the T-60's? Also, does anyone know if they give you a warranty (90 days?) on unit that was repaired out of warranty?
