I bought a 60hr standAlone Tivo at Best Buy 2 months ago.

The HD that was in it originally, based on the HD label, was a:

Western Digital WD600AW Performer "home entertainment hard drive".

According to Western Digital's web site,

http://www.westerndigital.com

these hard drives are made specifically for audio / video recording.

I Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot for fast reply; OK, now this would explain why those drives are so quiet....

I wanted to get the same model for some of my PC's which I would like to have emitting the lowest possible noise ( so far I changed voltages on some fans incl. CPU's from 12V to 7V or even 5V...), and replacing drives which whine or rattle.

I guess it's hard to find these drives in the retail stores, checked WD site and they don't offer them neither...

I purchased my Series2 directly from TiVo in Feb 2002, it came with a 60GB Western Digital WD Performer WD600AW.

You might want to be careful when you are lowering the voltages on the fans that are cooling your CPU's !

To much heat will cook 'em for sure.

Usually, HD's are pretty quiet. Especially 5400 rpm HD's.

And I believe that particular drive is really meant for OEM's.

Good luck.

FWIW, the drives do run well and very quiet in a PC. I have two Series2 units and put 2 x 120gig drives in each. I put the two Western Digital WD600AW Performer "home entertainment hard drive" into a Linux box I put together. This box emits virtually no sound at all compared to the computer next to it that has two 7200 rpm drives and extra fans to cool the drives, memory and cpu.
BTW, Craftsman - did you ever get a chance to free up the missing hours from your recent upgrade?

Hi LarryInAz.

No, not yet... I'm sort of involved in another little project right now.

But I will. I just don't know when.

It's not even filled up yet ! :)
