Using Tivo in other countries

I'm planning to buy a tivo which i plan to use in another country where tivo service is not available.
Is this possible?
I know that the HDR212 can be used unsub but I heard that you need to dial into Tivo during the initial setup. if dialing to tivo is a must, can i setup my tivo to dial using country codes?
is the tivo number toll-free? i know that in other countries, you can't call a toll-free number in the US.
would it be possible that i set it up here and then use it overseas?
thanks.

I don't know about the problems you are mentioning, but it won't work anyway - US TiVos are NTSC, and most other countries use something else, mostly PAL.

FWIW, they can modified to PAL:

The country where i'm going to use it uses NTSC.
can i setup my tivo without having to dial tivo's number?

Why not set up the TiVo now?
Then you will need to hack into the TiVo and modify the channel lineup anyway.

Here's a bunch of threads about operating an unsubbed TiVo.
You may find it easier to set the time if you can make a test call. Someone once said here that UUNET pops work ok for TiVo if there is one local to where you'll be. Why the big secret where? Are you going to Iraq? ;)
Mods: would be nice if there was a sticky on unsubbed boxes in the UG Forum - as this gets asked a lot.
