Robot Wars vs. BattleBots

I prefer Robot Wars. Their robots are bigger and more creative and I like the house bots.

I've heard that Robotwars (US Version) has gotten better, but the hosts on both the US and UK versions just don't work for me. Of course, I prefer the older host lineup on Battlebots as well--I really don't watch any of these shows anymore.

What.. no interest in TLC's Robotica?

Posted by: chris1

I haven't seen Robotica yet. When does the new season start? I just got into the whole robot fighting scene. I'm not too fond of the hosts on Robot Wars either. Who are the hosts on BattleBots?

The UK robots are just plain whimpy!...though though the housebots and flames add a nice twist...

Robitca was kind of a letdown... Had the SP all set up...and then removed it. Mostly children and hobbyists/hacks...making poorly performing bots...

I haven't watched any of them, but I have to ask... do any of them have actual robots -- i.e., self-controlled, not remote controlled by a person?

Posted by: markp99

No...all remote controlled...

Robotica's 3rd season was shown in a marathon a couple sundays ago. TLC doesn't have any more in the plans. Many of the robots in Battlebots either were made by builders who appeared on other shows or the bots themselves were the same as seen on RobotWars or BattleBots.

While none of the battlebots are autonomous there is nothing in the rules against it. Some builders are pushing the envelope for computer control. Next time you see a thwackbot, watch it closely. There is a really good chance that it is able to move in a specified direction while spinning.

I prefer Battlebots but haven't watched an episode in a LONG while. Whenever I flip onto the show, I'm instantly hooked, dropping anything I was doing at the time.

However, saw only a few seconds of Robot Wars (I think) and Mick Foley doesn't do it for me in a "real" TV show. Something about former 'rasslers' acting, I guess.

The UK version of Robot Wars was really the best.

Robotica improved quite a bit between seasons. It had really hit its stride this past year, with a couple robots that I thought were outstanding.

I'm just hoping that Battlebots has canned the useless Carmen Electra! At least with TiVo I could FF through her inane segments, but I really wanted somebody who could ask a couple appropriate questions before and after the bout, a la Tanya Memme from Robotica, who added a lot to the show.

Nope. Saw an ad last night. She's part of the next season (they're calling it 5.0)

That's what TiVo is for. You can watch the double episodes of Battlebots in 15 minutes.

I like Craig Charles (host of UK robot wars) but I don't like the house bots and stuff. It should be a 1 on 1 fight.

What would be cool is if Craig came over and hosted an ep of Battlebots. :)

The original robot wars competitions in San Francisco attempted to encourage autonomous robots. I dimly recall the rules allowed you to compete one weight class lower than your weight would otherwise allow. The second year there were two autonomous robots that were pretty nonfunctional; I think they ended up participating in a demonstration against each other, and failed.

Those were the good old days--no plexiglass walls, so shrapnel flew into the audience. I still have a chunk left over from the first superheavyweight final.

I can't stand the current robotwars, with or without Mick Foley or superimposed Chyna. Having massive, professionally built house robots tear contestants to shreds doesn't encourage interesting competition.

Battlebots retains the characteristics that made the original robot wars so enjoyable. But I'm biased; the birth of battlebots from a legal dispute over ownership of the robotwars concept left a bad taste.

I vote for Robot Wars.

But the nice UK version with Craig Charles (Lister!), not the TNT version.

The setup in the first seasons was a bit better (esp the Labrinth). Phillipa out there talking to the teams and such.
