Is my DCT-2000 missing a serial port?

Hi all
As I understand it, AT&T should be upgrading our cable box's firmware fairly soon (Bay Area, CA). I was hoping to move to serial control of the DCT's channel changing functions, but after looking at the back of my cable box, it appears to NOT have a serial connector. There appears to be a place for it (DB-9 shaped punchout) but at the moment, there's a plastic plug covering the hole (with nothing behind it).
There is a 1/8" jack labeled IR but I think that's for outbound control of another device. Am I SOL? I wonder if, when the time comes, I can exchange the box with AT&T for a serial enabled model.
