mfsadd won't expand the drive

I had a 40GB DirecTivo, and I wanted to add another 40GB B: drive to it. So I installed everything, ran mfsadd (and didn't pay attention to the output), plugged everything back in and turned it on.
At the systeminfo screen, I realized that the capacity was wrong and I had installed a 20GB drive by mistake (I have a pile of drives lying around and I just picked up the wrong one!).
I tried to fix it by doing a full (dd) copy from the 20GB drive to an empty 40GB drive. Then I ran mfsadd again on the 2 40GB drives. I paid attention to the mfsadd output this time, and instead of adding another partition to expand it up to 80GB, it was still stuck at 60GB (actually, 63 hours). It told me that the full capacity was already used, and so it didn't do anything.
mfsinfo shows me that the A: drive is correctly using its capacity (36GB of mfs partitions), but the new B: drive has only a 20GB mfs partition (with 3 mfs expansions left). The mfstools-2.0 bootCD correctly recognizes both drives as 40GB (they're identical Quantum LCT20's, both pulled from DirecTivos).
So it looks to me like mfsadd is refusing to add the last 20GB partition. Is there an alternative, or a way to force mfsadd to do it?

Do a restore onto the drive pair with the -x option. That will divorce the A drive and then remarry it to the B drive. I'm not sure that your recordings would survive that.

OK, let me rephrase that: Is there an alternative while still keeping recordings?
I'm not quite willing to part with them yet. I guess at worst, I'll keep it as-is until all the recordings have been watched, and then wipe it clean and restore to the full capacity.
