Grandpa Simpson-Mr. Burns question
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Here's a silly question:
I'm a BIG fan of the Simpsons ever since the Tracy Ulman show but have a continuity question that's been bugging me forever.
In one episode a few years back (The one with Britney Spears in a guest shot) the oldest living man in Springfield keeled over while accepting an award for Oldest Living Man in Springfield, 'natch. Montgomery Burns seems to be the next-to-oldest man after this death, and he gives an acceptance speech to the award.
But if you'll take a ride in the flashback machine with me, the episode where Grandpa (Abraham) Simpson is in the Army, a very, very young Monty Burns seems to be considerably younger than Grandpa.
And Burns is supposed to be older than Grandpa in the later episode?
I don't get this.
Sure, it's early, but it's been bugging me forever!
Thanks for letting me get this off my chest!

Definitely an error in continuity.
Having just purchased the 2nd Season DVD, in the episode that Burns runs for governor to avoid having to make improvements to the Nuclear Power Plant that would cost him $56 million...they show Grandpa Simpson at the retirement home when Burns comes on TV to do a political ad. After the ad runs, Grandpa states - "That's what this country needs, YOUNG blood!"
This can only mean that Grandpa is, in fact, older than C. Montgomery Burns.

I think one thing you have to keep in mind is that, in order to win the "Oldest Man" contest (and the kiss from whats-her-face), you'd have to know exactly how old you are. Grampa probably forgot that years ago.
(OK, so it's a lame attempt at explaining Simpsons continuity--Worst Excuse Ever! :D)

MAYBE in some of those flashbacks it was Abe's own father or grandfather? With the exception of Bart, Dan Casteleneta has voiced ALL the Simpson men. :D
(Yeah, I'm reaching here, too...2nd Worst Excuse Ever! ;) )

Abe was a member of the Fighting Hellfish and except for him and Monty, all the other characters in the flashback were fathers of current regulars. Even though Grandpa was a the SGT of the company he wouldn't necessarily be older than Monty, I can't remember if they mentioned age. As has been pointed out by CBG before, the Simpsons have no respect for continuity.

I was just checking out the Simpsons Archive and I noticed some of the continuity problems for the Hellfish episode involved the age of Monty Burns.
+ Monty Burns should be considerably older than Abe Simpson.
+ Assuming Burns is 104, he would have been 52 in 1944, far to old to
be a private in the army.

Finally! That's good info, kbrunsting. Where did you find the info?
Thanks guys.
Now, off to find other Simpsons continuity errors ... :)

I'm sorry, are we discussing the Simpsons or Enterprise? :D

Also, there's the episode with Homer's mom returning. They show flashbacks with her and Abe approximately the same age. Then, in current times, she's in her fifties. They make fun of the continuity thing by saying he just didn't age well.

Well, this one has got me stumped. :D
