Transformers and He-Man Returning...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: holee

There's a new He-Man cartoon movie showing on Cartoon Network. The next showing is TOMORROW (Saturday). I saw the first airing, it's not bad. A more serious, with a bit of anime thrown in. Main downside is that they STILL have Orko, dammit. I hate Orko!! All of the old characters are back with relatively similar designs.

And Transformers - Armada, the next Transformers series also begins on Cartoon Network. Set you SP's folks!

New He-Man 'toon = "The Spinning Sword Show". Is that ALL they do!? ;P

Posted by: chris1

I thought He-Man sucked bigtime. All the characters looked like freaks. I concur with jchan that all those freaks do is twirl their swords and make cliche statements. However, I am looking forward to seeing Transformers Armada. I already have my season pass set up for the premiere next Friday. I hope it's better than He-Man. What Cartoon Network needs to do is bring back Beast Wars. That was one of the best cartoons I have ever seen, both in terms of the quality of the animation (totally CGI) and the writing.

Posted by: jchan

I personally like the follow on "Beast Machines" better, but I agree.

If you liked what you saw in the new HE-MAN 'toon, check out the newly designed He-Man action figures. They're totally awesome, to steal an '80s catchphrase. :)

Totally detail-oriented, kind of like McFarlane's action figures/sports figures.

But here's to Transformers: Armada figures: :(

I have my Tivo set for both, so I hope we can continue this thread after watching both!

Here is TF Armada's schedule:

Note that it omitted Armada's premiere which airs at 4 PM on August 23.

The premiere trailer can be downloaded here in QuickTime format:

It seems after setting He-Man in both the Season Pass and Wishlist, one setting seems to find He-Man no problem, but the other won't find it. Don't both use the same database, or is one different from the other? That's weird. Hope it doesn't keep me from missing any other programs...

Matt

Posted by: jchan

Wishlist doesn't include the "-" in "He-Man". I set mine up to do a title search on "Masters of the Universe" and it picked it up.

He-Man can't really stand up against modern cartoons. I wasn't terrably impressed. I think they should have dumnped many of the old ancillary characters like Man-E-Faces, Mechaneck and Triclops and designed some new warriors. Man-at-Arms, Teela, Adam, Skeletor, Beast-Man are all fine. Even Stratos and Evil-Lyn, (Boy those guys liked hyphenated names!), was OK. Many of the others were just created to sell more toys and should have been ignored.

That being said, I DID like the fact that Beast-Man had something to contribute. I remember him being nothing more than a stooge, and in this version he seemed to be able to control animals. I also liked the new design for Adam.

He-Man in a nutshell:

HA! That's exactly what I was thinking during the forest scene. I don't think I can ever watch the show again...I've ruined it for myself.

New Drinking Game:

He-Man sword spins!

I liked the new He-Man. At least we got rid of the damn freeze beams all the time. But yeah, Makeneck has to go. Take Orko as well.

Posted by: cancermatt

I really like the show's concept, even if the pilot didn't offer too much new. I like how in the new show (2002) they've got *ALL* the characters (supporting and main) working together, instead of the old show ('80s) mostly only had one-shot episodes that featured one character, then he was never seen again.

This may go against others here, but I liked seeing Man-E-Faces, Merman, Ram-Man, Evil-Lyn, etc. and can't wait to see how they work others in (that includes Stinkor! :) )

After watching Transformers - Armada, I think I can safely say that He-Man's really not that bad in comparison.

1 Orko <> 3 Energetic but Stupid Children.

Posted by: chris1

I saw Armada today. It sucked beyond belief. I am so disappointed. :(

Posted by: Drazi

Didn't care for Armada either. They spent way too much time with the kids and not enough on the bots. And what's this new wormhole travel they have? Megatron would have killed for that on the original series.

Posted by: jchan

Looks like the same style as the horrible Zoids shows.

Posted by: cancermatt

POWER WENT OUT AFTER 15 minutes, but looks like I didn't miss too much. From what I saw (15 seconds of Prime and a few more of Megs) it doesn't look like much. Same animators as Robots in Disguise (which was done a few years ago in Japan), so it's authentic Japanimation, to say the least, I think.

But from what I did catch: looks like there's gonna be at least SOME of the original (re: '80s) transformers robots in this series.

But remember: this is a different universe than the '80s original, so they can keep using the same names of older robots, i.e. keeping the trademarks.

I had to shut Transformers:Armada off half way through--I just couldn't handle it anymore. It was aweful. Terrible. Really, really bad.

I mean, how long can they really stretch out the "Megatron stairs at a couple kids" scene?

And why must the continually screw around with the story? The original Transformers (along with the comic) might have been a little childish, but it was a good, logical story. This just didn't make any sense--no, it did; introduce the Minicons so you can sell more toys. Blah!

It almost looked like they were trying to keep some of the looks and personalities of the original autobots, but with different names. The yellow autobot who called himself Hotshot acted just like Bumblebee (who later became Goldbug). And Red Alert looks like an updated Jazz. Even his method of transforming looks the same.

And they kept the name Laserbeak, but now he's an autobot??

Starscream is still red, but completely different.

I'll watch next weeks episode, but that may be it.

Posted by: jchan

Hotshot is actually a revamped "Hot Rod" from the old show. Bumblebee hasn't surfaced yet.

When the mini-cons alert beam flies over Cyberton (about 20 mins into the 8/23/02 premiere), look for the following G1 cameos:

Since I stopped watching, could somebody let me know if they ever explained what was going on on Cybertron in the previous million years (with spoiler tags if appropriate). I just find it odd that they imply the civil war was done when they sent the minicons off into space, but then there still seems to be a lot of animosity a million years later when they surface.

I still think there's a definate market for a re-vamped version of the original cartoon, with the same storyline.

I'd like to see that. I really liked the storylines after the movie, when they were mainly based on Cybertron.

Stories tha dealt with their history such as Alpha Trion being A-3 and leading the revolt against the Quints, etc.

Although they could do away with Megatron being insane. Keep him the way he was in the movie.

Hopefully, the revival of the Transformers comics from Dreamwave will fill alot of the details. They even managed to get one of the original writers of the TF comics to write for the new comics.

The graphics on the new comics is pretty good.

Anyone else find it amusing that Megatron's Mini-Con was named "Leader One"(Like the Go-Bot leader)?

Yeah, I looked closely at it, just in case they "combined" the series. That would have been cool...

Posted by: cancermatt

Hasbro bought the tonka (I think) line of Go-bots a long time ago, and when the Generation 2 TF figures came out, there was a whole line of Transformers "Gobots" that were either race cars or jets, all recolored of the same model (not the other gobot line recolors though).

Actually, Dreamwave is releasing "The War Within" the first Wed. in Sept. I believe, and it addresses Transformers life before being flung onto Earth. Images look great, before they transformed into Earth-borne vehicles, animals, etc. Written by Simon Furman, the main writer of all American TF comics (and all England's as well). Here's a teaser for the new comic line:

The legend of Transformers begins with the belief of One. Facing a devastating civil war on Cybertron, Optimus Prime faces his first -- and greatest -- challenge. Before he can deal with the threat posed by Megatron and the Decepticons, the new Autobot leader must look within... and decide if Cybertron is worth saving at all. Witness the internal struggle of a great leader, and the creation of Transformers history. If you thought you knew it all...

BTW, none of the minicons are "remade" '80s gobots, just in case you wanted to know.

Just saw He-Man first actual episode (I think) 'Origins Part One' I have to say - that it made me pretty happy. Same characters, same overall feel. The animation is a bit different, as is the color palette - but I think it deserves a SP.

As for Armada - I will pass. I was never a real big fan.

I truly believe I read somewhere that Transformers: Armada would have 34 episodes, and after that, they were going to air the ORIGINAL G1 EPISODES on Cartoon Network. I've tried a quick search and came up empty, but if/when I find the source, I'll link it.

Tonights episode of He-man was priceless.

King: "He-man, you can, fly!"
He-man: "well... no."

Transformers Armada: Pretty bad. The animation spends more time "frozen" than actually animating! :(
