Lonely TiVo

On Sunday 8/17 I took my TiVo along with my DTV receiver in my motorhome to a lovely spot on the South shore of Lake Superior. Everything normal Sunday evening.

Monday AM found TiVo with the "severe error" green screen saying to leave it running for 3 hours connected to the phone line. No phone line available. Left it running for some time, restarted it and left it running some more. No joy. This is a "lifetime" unit and I have a backup drive (at home) so figured I could fix it.

Suffered through Monday and Tuesday without TiVo.

Arrived home on Wednesday and connected TiVo to the phone line and plugged it in without much hope. A short time later (< 15 minutes) I noticed TiVo had restarted and everyting was OK. All schedules and recordings intact. I do not know if it made a phone call. :) :D :) :D

Was it just lonely and wanted to call home?

I will take the backup drive on the next trip.

Something in the harddrive failed, plugging into the phone line let Tivo to try and fix this problem over the phone line (ie. sending an upgrade).

In extremely dire circumstances, it can call home and ask for assistance by a human technician. Probably didn't do that in 15 minutes, it may have needed to get some files that had gotten corrupted. But it can be pretty smart about that sort of thing sometimes.

There's actually a human on the other end of the green screen? I assumed it just downloaded the directories until enough files were back to reconstruct the rest, with the 'three hour' thing reserved for when it needed a new kernel.

That's pretty cool. It's like tivo skinned its knee and is calling home to mommy. PV
