I am not posting this in help because I don't think it is a problem, I just can't figure out what happened.
Last night our house guest was watching live TV through TiVo when an overlay came on asking if it was alright for TiVo to change the channel to record a SP. He read the message, which included the channel TiVo wanted to change to, and changed the channel to that channel (27) with the TiVo remote. Now I don't know if he changed the channel before TiVo tried or after TiVo did. I came in about 15 minutes after this happened and he told me what happened. The TiVo record light was not on. I told him it was no big deal, and pressed the record button to record the show. I got a boom, TiVo would not record the show. The buffer was there OK, but TiVo would not record. It paused and FF ok though. At commercial, I went into Now Playing, and there was the show, with no icon. The show was a partial recording, with time at 0:00. I deleted the show, thinking that was why it wouldn't record. When I went back to live TV, the buffer was gone. I didn't try to setup a record from this point, we just watched the show.
I was just curious as to what may have caused this. Any ideas?

I do believe I can be of assistance here...
On my own TiVo, I've noticed that if a show is being recorded, sometimes (I haven't figured out if it's all the time or just in specific circumstances) I can change the channel and TiVo won't warn me that something is being recorded. It simply stops recording and changes the channel. This leaves you with a partial recording of your show in Now Playing.
I'm betting that TiVo had already committed to changing the channel when your houseguest changed the channel (BTW: You don't mention if he changed the channel using the TiVo remote or a different remote for the cable box, but I'll assume TiVo remote for the time being...).
TiVo interpreted this as a channel change (meaning you want to go to a different channel instead of the one it was sending you to - regardless that they were the same). and halted the recording (you should also tell us how long the partial recording was in your Now Playing. A few seconds? Longer? Shorter?)
As far as why it wouldn't let you record the buffer? This gets into an area of technicality that I'm not prepared to answer - but perhaps someone else will if you can provide a little more info.
But to make you feel better - I'm fairly certain it's not something broken in your particular TiVo. Just an odd set of cicumstances has possibly revealed a shortcut that was taken in the programming of the code. I mean, how often might this happen? Possibly someone at TiVo didn't think it would happen often enough to be an issue.
Good Luck!

Yes, he changed the channel with the TiVo remote. And the partial recording length was 0:00.
So it sounds like TiVo changed the channel, then he changed the channel immediately after.

I wonder if there is a difference between changing channels with the channel up/down buttons versus changing by directly entering, on the TiVo remote, the channel number.
