Can't change channels

Just bought a Phillips 30 hr. Tivo and cannot change channels on my Magnavox DBS500 satellite receiver with seriel or IR cable. Have gone through all levels of customer support with Tivo and they don't know why the remote codes won't work.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
