Regardless of my baud rate, I'm not able to muster anything better than about 100 bytes per second (not a typo) with rz

I'm not seeing any errors, at least not reported in the CRT upload window.

Beyond cable noise, is there anything I can check or try?

The usual cause of horribly slow Zmodem transfers is that the sender or receiver can't handle a constant, steady stream of data. The usual fix is to switch the protocol to sending the data in chunks, with a brief pause in between each chunk.

Try configuring CRT to use a window size of 1024 or 2048 bytes when it sends using the Zmodem protocol.
