PBS / 9-11 Star Gripe (it's not what you think)

Whereas, there's like eight different programs previewed with 30 and 60-second spots.
Whereas, TiVo corporate approved the programming (obviously)
Why the heck aren't I seeing a thumbs-up-to-record blinky-thing on this stuff like I get on every other NBC commercial? No, instead if I want to record the program TiVo is explicitly telling me about, I have to go manually searching for it.
Dumb. Very dumb.

I played the clips. I got the I-Preview/Press Thumbs Up to Record. It scheduled a recordin. No problem.
Perhaps your guide data doesn't go out far enough to schedule a recording.

Hmph.. that's weird. I'm not @ home, so I can't check my guide data but I know I have guide data through at least next friday because I saw Stargate SG1 in the to-be-recorded section.
Ah well... I'll take a look at it again when I get home, maybe in a day or two see if suddenly it works.
It might be worth the TiVo holding off on such things until the guide data is there for it (e.g., somehow have the TiVo look up "Can I do a thumbs-up-to-record for this? If not, I'll hold off giving it to the owner until I can do so."
The added benefit of that is that if you're getting a preview for something you can't watch, then you're not bothered by something you can't actually record. :-)

To get the i-Preview you pretty much have to be a Partner of TiVo's. Look in Showcases and those would be the prime candidates. PBS is not a partner and they would have to put the tag on their programming so TiVo could read it.
NBC and Starz are the only ones I have seen who use it. So if it's "dumb" it could be because they don't have the money, PBS that is, to partner with TiVo.

If they're not a partner, how'd they get a star-item on the main menu? This isn't just "random promo" that TiVo picked up.

1. What he's talking about is a Showcase item: PBS: We Remember.
2. PBS is now a TiVo partner, at least in the short run; see the press release.
3. You should get an I-Preview icon when watching the clips; I did.

More than likely they got into a one-shot partnership .... oops found this on google
http://www.pbs.org/insidepbs/news/pbstivo.html
It's more of an alliance i guess. I stand corrected. However, I don't know if they will have the ability to use the i-preview (thumbs up), as I have never seen PBS use it before. This may change after this "alliance".
BTW, Stargate is on Showtime? I don't get that channel, but they are a partner and may use the i-preview, I think I remember some people saying they had seen it there. Maybe as this PBS programming gets nearer they may activate it. NBC's would usually be about a week before the show.

ahhh, just caught that, see above. I only use DTiVo's right now, and I don't see this on my receivers, could be 'cause I have about 4 Starz on demand stars that keep rotating on my screen. :p
So it looks like some people are getting these on their TiVo's but some aren't.
Guess I'll have to check this out on my DTiVo tonite. Anyone see it on their DTiVo?

I got a thumbs up on the first half but not on the second half of them.

Uh, yeah: me. (Check out the sig in my post)
GatorDeb Perhaps this is a guide data issue as I suggested earlier? <Chomp><Chomp>

Cool! will have to check it out tonite. Sometimes I assume incorrectly that the majority of the people here are using SA TiVo's. And an interloper like me with the DTiVo sees different things on the box.
sig (?) what that?:D

Well finally got home and checked out what you guys were talking about. I have the PBS showcase box. As near as I can tell, this just showed up last night on showcases on my DTivo.
Also, I do not have the Star item on TiVo Central. All I have is the rotating Starz on demand movies.
I do have the i-preview thumbs when I view the movies, tho so it's workin' here.
FYI only...

Might be too old to be relevent to this thread, but I thought I'd link what Tivopony had to say a month ago regarding the PBS/We Remember deal.

My theory about the missing iPreview/TiVoMatic icons is that they don't work for all the clips because your local PBS affiliate may deviate from the national PBS listings. One of the Frontlines that the Showcase advertised as airing on 9/3 won't be showing on my local PBS station until 9/11. Since my guide info doesn't go that far (yet) I can't give a Thumbs Up to it.

FWIW, I've still got nothing related to PBS in my Showcases, nor do I have a star item about it. This is on a fairly new DirecTiVo (installed Thursday 8/22). I do receive a local PBS station via DirecTV, too, if that matters (RI locals, but it's a PBS station from CT). My guide data went out to the 12th the last I checked.

I think it would be great if TiVo would let PBS put up showcases and use the Ipreview for free. PBS can't afford to pay for such luxuries like TiVo showcases, but I'm sure they would make use of the Ipreview if they could.
It would be a nice gesture!

I received the PBS remembers star and programming on two of my three Tivos and the thumbs up is included in at least the one or two I have viewed.
Odd thing is the star hasn't appeard on my third Tivo even after a forced call and that is the Tivo I would like to record the programming on.

I'm getting the 'thumbs up to record' on my SA.
However, bear in mind that some of the clips are ads for specific shows, and some aren't. The 'we remember' is a teaser for the whole group of shows and thus has no 'to record' associated with it. Ditto the Behind the Scenes interview (if you want to record the show itself, go to the entry for "Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero" and you'll see the 'Thumbs up to Record' there).
I've already seen the NOVA on Why the Towers Fell and recommend it highly.

I think PBS ability to afford "luxuries like TiVo showcases" is not completely accurate. While a lower partnership cost for PBS (versus a regular commercial network) to be a part of TiVo makes sense, many of PBS's high profile shows have a significant amount of corporate sponsonrship and some viewers will agree that it is hard to distiniguish a corporate sponsor recognition and a regular ad on commercial television.
PBS has bought ads on regular networks to promote some of its shows like Frontier House on occassions too. That being said, I would also like PBS to become a regular part of TiVo as soon as possible beyond the 'We Remember' piece.

Frontier House, what a cool show I would have never seen, but thanks to TiVo Suggestions I was able to watch an episode and create a season pass...

I haven't been as lucky with Suggestions, but make it a habit of checking the guide on TiVo every two weeks or so. In my area a lot of those series/specials will show in the early morning hours. They just finished up with The 1900 House , which I think was made by the same people who produced Frontier House.
