Unsubbed TiVo & Quitting Guided Setup

Please help, anyone!!

I've been all over these forums seeking information and advice, and there seems to be no information on the topic.

First off, I bought my original TiVo thinking that it could be used just fine as a digital VCR, with the added bonus of being able to pause, rewind, etc. I thought if you wanted the subscription, you could do so, but not necessary... I'm now finding out that simply was not true, that I'd been mislead.

Regardless, I've had the lifetime subscription on that unit anyway, and loved it. Recently, lightening fried my modem and I had to replace the unit, which I did. However, the old unit would have worked great as a manual, standalone recorder, but I can't reconfigure how it operates on another tv without it trying to call in first (which it cannot without a functioning modem!!)

I figure I could find some sort of workaround on here for this problem (or maybe not, based upon my initial findings!) but the problem became worse when I foolishly attempted to repeat the Guided Setup. It seems that once you begin the guided setup, you can never quit it, no matter what. I've tried unplugging the unit, even attempting the phone call... but when it fails, it just gives me the option of trying again! I'm stuck!

Does anyone know how in the world to get out of this LOOP? Seems I'm lost in this quagmire, and no where to go. There HAS to be some kind of hack to get out, right?

Secondarily, does anyone know how I can work on the other part of my problem should I ever figure out how to get out of guided setup??

Thanks so much for any help/insight!!
Darren

TiVo uses PPP over the modem to get an IP connection.

If you could set up PPP over the serial port and route it to the net, then convince TiVo that it's already got an IP address and does not need to dial out then it should make the daily call through the serial link.

Some people have managed to add external modems I believe.

Finally, get a TurboNet card. It will cost you about $60 but that's less than the cost of a new TiVo.

If the "old" unit you want to repair is a Series 1 that originally came with software v.1.x, you may be able to set it up as a "dumb VCR."

Otherwise, (e.g., if it's a Series 2) it will not be useable in "VCR mode" no matter what you do.

There is no reason to use a unit with lifetime sub as a dumb digital VCR. Either have the modem fixed or use another method to connect to the Internet. If you really don't want to spend more money on it, sell yours and buy another Series1 without subscription.

there is no way out of guided setup, i've been there. you could just backup your working tivo and restore it to the broke tivo or find an image and restore it to the broke tivo.

I have the same problem (Philips HD112 with v1.3 software). I am currently trying to get PPP to work over the serial port, but if I can somehow tweak it into a dumb PVR, I would be a happy camper.

I don't have a lifetime subscription on this unit, so no loss there...
