Cats and Bengay??
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My boyfriend pulled a muscle in his back today, so I took pity on him this evening and rubbed some Bengay into his shoulder. I washed my hands, and sat down again in front of TV. A couple of minutes later, one of the cats jumped up, and started rubbing her head on my hand, as if I smelt of catnip. Her eyes went really big, as if she was hunting, or keeping a watch on something. It was just the catnip reaction, with her rubbing frantically on my hand, and rolling over a lot, except a little more aggressive - she was trying to nibble on my hand too.
I realised it must be the Bengay, and tested it out. If you put a dab of Bengay on your hand, the smell is too strong for the cats, they sniff it then pull away. But if you wash your hands, the smell is diluted, and they go crazy! Both cats were rolling around frantically on the floor after coming near me and my boyfriend.
I know Bengay has menthol in it, and I know catnip is a type of mint, but I wasn't expecting that reaction! There must be catnip-style mint in the Bengay formula. Anyone else ever noticed this? Or are my cats crazy?

I noticed it too. Last time I put it on my tomcat stopped by for a sniff...and wrapped his paws around my arm so I couldn't move it while he sniffed it.
For about 20 seconds or so. He's done this before with other good smells...like when I take off leather gloves after working on the yard.

Hmmm. Interesting.
That's straight on the shopping list and will be rubbed on their scratching post tomorrow! I'm fed up with having to keep rubbing catnip on it.

Get some "Alluna" herbal sleep pills... rub the pills on your fingers, or put the pill near your cats nose.... Mine went NUTSSSS!!!!!
I had such a fun time watching my kitty go crazy, I put the pill in an old stock, and then put a plastic tie over it. Lasted for about 1 hour until he ripped the sock open, and tried to eat the pill.

My cat goes nuts over anything: lotion, Ben Gay, cortisone cream. It can't be good for him. I have to keep him away from me after putting such creams on or he'll try to lick them off.

Mine love Flexall 454. :D

I've seen this happen with a lot of rubs. The same type of thing happens with Icy-Hot, Absorbine Jr. and the like. They must have a common ingredient.

I had a cat that was crazy for shoe polish.

Some of my cats like Listerine-breath. (And one absolutely hates it!)

Wow, what a great list of new baits. Keep'em coming. Thanks all.

Gold-bond powder. If there's any lying around, my cat will sniff it and even roll around in it.
Having a cat with white powder on its nose looks really bad...

If I dip my hand in one of those paraffin hot wax therapy tubs, the cats will shy away from my hand, even a while after I've removed the wax, so it's not because of the hot wax.

Here, it's Gold Bond medicated cream, the mentholated kind. My oldest boy Smoky goes nuts over anything with menthol. He'd gladly eat it if given the chance.

I used to have to hide my cigarettes(menthol) because of a cat I had.

My cat goes nuts over anything mint. Mint chap stick is the favorite. First he licks the mint and then immediately has to lick his fur. It is pretty funny to watch.

For my tomcat, it's ear wax.
Blech!

Anything with menthol in it attracts most cats, as long as it's not overpowering. Nearly all "hot rubs" like Icy Hot and so forth have menthol in them.
Gold Bond Powder is a combination of Menthol and Zinc Oxide.
Just be sure to check the ingredients on anything you give to your cat or anything he can lick. Lots of things are poison to cats. Chocolate is esp. dangerous (1/2 oz per pound of body weight will kill a cat and most dogs). Aspirin is bad, but acetaminophen is especially dangerous. Two Tylenols will kill a cat, one will either kill him or make him severly ill. Teflon (no kidding, but rare) is toxic to birds and not very good for cats either.. Anything with caffiene is toxic in large doses, to both people and pets, but pets need a whole lot less than people. Lots and lots of plants are not safe for kitty, etc. List goes on and on. So just make sure you look up the ingredients online first, yeah? :D

Well, my cat went nuts for a few things....
I used to have long hair and whenever I would wash it (right before bedtime), he would roll around on/in it and chew it for a while. Then he would rearrange my hair on the pillow and lay down on it. Anytime we had a visitor that came over that had freshly washed hair, if my cat could reach it, he would try to chew it.
The other wierd things that he used to do......
....maybe I should put this in spoilerage space in case you get ill easily.....
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
my cat used to love rolling around in my underwear that I had been wearing for the day. He'd rub his face all over them. He also used to sit on my husband's shoulder whilst he was "pleasuring himself" waiting for the climax. If you didn't keep the cat away, the cat would try to help the hubby clean up.
One very strange cat.....

One of my cats has a thing for shoes. Fortunately he doesn't chew them--he just smells them. He's probably sleeping at home with his head on my Tevas right now!

I'm so glad I have normal cats :p They like catnip and that's about it.
Cats are really funny about what "turns them on". My two are brother and sister, but only the female (Nellie) likes to chase the laser-pointer. Tigger couldn't be bothered.

My previous cat, and my sisters dog will play with my laser pointer too.
The dog however, tries to eat/bite the light for some reason.
