The Inside Scoop

Get Ready for a New Season!
Your favorite design crew is back for another season of home improvement, TLC style. Tune in Saturday, September 7, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, for two all-new episodes. Check out our show specs page for episode descriptions.

Meet the New Designers!
Designers Edward Walker and Kia Steave-Dickerson join the crew this year to battle budgets and maximize minutes in the quest to create great new rooms for our homeowners.

Berkeley Bonus Material
We sat down with Genevieve soon after she redesigned the sitting room for the sorority gals at the University of California. Visit the Berkeley: Prospect Street specs page for a behind-the-scenes look at Gen's experience on the show. Dying to know more about Doug's leather pants? Wait until you hear what Gen has to say!

Laurie's Baby
On Wednesday, August 14, Laurie Hickson-Smith gave birth to Gibson Witherspoon, a bouncing baby boy. Gibson weighed in at 8 lbs, 6 ounces, and was 21 inches long. Laurie, Brad and their son are doing well!

While You Were Out
Our new design show allows participants to create a dream project for their loved ones. Whether in the basement, bedroom, kitchen, den, or outside in the yard, While You Were Out is the show that will make those dreams happen.

Here's what they're saying:

"I loved Laurie's room, especially the coffee table. I also liked the way she appreciated the art work on the walls by the homeowner. It was sweet that she left it to show how much it admired it. Of course, I think Laurie is sweet anyway. We southern girls stick together!"

What does everyone else think of "While you were out". I think if they did a Trading Spaces and changed hosts, I could watch it. But as of this point, she drives me too insane. And drop the silly questions, they just don't add anything to the show...

I tried watching while you were out but those same things you complain about ruined it for me.

Yay! The best show on TV (after West Wing and Buffy...)! I'm very excited about the new designers... this should be interesting. Does this mean that they're getting rid of old designers? I guess Laurie's probably taking maternity leave. Too bad, she was one of my favorites. Though sometimes it can be more fun to watch what I think are design disasters ;)

I've seen bits and pieces of While You Were Out episodes. I agree that the host isn't great... I find Paige from TS to be grating, but the WYWO host is annoying without being interesting. And I also agree about the question... they don't really add much to the show. Overall, the show didn't engage me as much, and I didn't really like the designs. Just missing the character that TS has.

cello, I think you hit the nail on the head. It really is missing the character that Trading Spaces has. You feel like you know Doug and Laurie and Vern in some small way watching them week over week. I don't get that from While you were out. It's also annoying how they have more people and more money, but they somehow can't get finished on time. I guess part of it is to make the show more exciting, but it just comes off as incompetence to me...

So, what did everybody think of the new guy (Edward?)?

I thought he seemed kind of nervous and unnatural in front of the camera. Didn't really get a sense of who he is... maybe he'll loosen up a bit with time. A decent room, but what's up with the "zebra" carpet? How strange.... I don't think it fit in at all with the rest of the room.

I do have to say that I think that was my favorite Frank room ever! I'm not usually into his kitsch, but those birch trees were absolutely gorgeous. At first I winced when he said he was going to put something on that gorgeous shade of red. But those trees were more amazing than I could have imagined. And the sliding doors... and the rug(!). Not to mention that he was working in a space that was pretty amazing to begin with. I'd give my left foot for a living/dining room like that, completely empty and undecorated. Those homeowners sure have a nice place.

I liked the other NY-Long Island show better. Of course, Vern and Genevieve are my favorite designers so that might have had something do with it. I do have to say their rooms came out strikingly similar with the light greens and cream and natural wood. I never thought I'd see Vern go for the feminine trendy with the toile, but hey whatever works.

Ya know, one of the things I've noticed about Vern is that he is usually very good at designing rooms that fit the homeowners well.

I usually am a big fan of his rooms. The few times I've not really cared for a room, I recognized that he was doing what he was doing because it was something the homeowners would want. I think he's usually right on.

And I appreciate things like the fact that he doesn't put weird and unfitting zebra rugs in rooms, or put half naked pictures of the female homeowner on the wall. He does really interesting stuff, without making me worry about what weird or ugly thing he'll do to ruin a room. That gets a big

:)

Anyone know if TLC will ever "partner" the show and reair episodes on another network......we don't get TLC

I think that this year is only going to be their third season, so it might be a bit early for that. I'd assume they will eventually... the show is getting so popular...
