(posted in help center..as well as here sorry about that)

I think I killed my Sony :(
I wanted to pop a Turbonet card in my SA Sony tonight. I figured while I have it open, I'll try to load Tivoweb and other cool stuff on to it. That was 6 hours ago. My TIVO woult not boot (I had a problem mounting the drived.) I rolled it back to my back up I took before I dropped the second drive in it 6-months ago, and I STILL can't get it to boot. I know the backup is clean, I did the test on it when I originally took it. The restore looked ok, but I dropped it back into the box and I am stuck on the black screen with the little black tivo man.

HELP. Wife ready to kill husband.

I have pulled the drive out and reseated all the cables..is there something I am ovelooking?

Anyone in the SEATTLE area got some time to take a look at it and help a fellow TIVO-ite?

Thanks...

Did you do anything to the TiVo hardware, or just try to load the software? I'm not familiar with Sony splash screens, is this the first splash screen you're stuck on.

Have you checked your drive jumpers? Try Cable Select.

I only took the drive out and tried to load tivoweb on it. I failed mounting it when in the PC (tried 3 times) pulled it out and dropped it back into the TIVO. I am pretty sure when it used to boot up, I saw the SONY logo then the black tivo man screen (can someone w/ a SONY confirm that?)
For now, It just boots up right to the black tivo man screen.
I am trying now to reload my backup image on to the drive....but I am not confident that it will work. Anyone else have some thoughts?

UPDATE: I am really screwed, and don't know what to do. I restored my orginal image to the drive twice..and I *STILL* am getting the Black screen with the Tivoman on it. It starts on the as soon as I power up. Anyone have any suggestions? I am at the end of my rope here. If I can't fix it, what are my (non-warrenty) repair options?

P.S. If there is a good hardware hacker in the Seattle area, I'd love to chat directly with you.

When you first power on the tivo you get a black screen showing the tivo mascot in the spotlight with a few colored balls and the caption

"Your recorder is starting up.
Please wait a minute"

(this screen is basically the bios boot logo, happens regardless of rather the drive is connected)

A few seconds later when the startup script executes it changes to a grey screen with the caption.

"Almost there.
A few more seconds please."

(failure to see this screen means that there was either a problem reading the drive or a problem executing the startup script)

THEN the sony logo on black, followed by the slide animation and the main menu.

Offhand I'd say to check the jumper settings on the drive and make sure the cables are secure. Apart from that, if you've messed with the rc.sysinit file you need to make sure it's still marked executable (chmod +x rc.sysinit).

Turns out that the drive was bad :( A trip to Compusa and 75.00 later, I restored my image to the new drive dropped it in and bingo....I can boot. I am forcing a update now....so I should be back online in a few hours. Now...once I update to 3.0, and get it on my network, can I just telnet in...or do I need to do anything else, like load some binaries on it?

Tivo sucked up another weekend as I am back online with it. Tivoweb is installed, but it occasionally locks up....is there a work around? Also, is there a way to have the 30-sec skip hack load into the machine now that I have access to it via telnet?
